Pacing Tutorial

The 13-pg supplement worksheet for this tutorial is also available!

This tutorial was suggested by Tym P, and voted on by Patrons to be a future tutorial! Thanks for voting :] We'll have another poll soon.

I hope you guys like this tutorial, I put a ton of thought into it and I think I've got some really good advice in here, all of which I use myself. Let me know if you have any questions!

Also my secret: I've been basing my tutorial color schemes off my bf's sneaker collection. He got a new one the other day... it's pretty

Pacing Tutorial

Comments

I could spend all day looking at these tutorials. And I have. Today, as a matter of fact. And parts of yesterday. Last week. Next week. You work is greatly appreciated, as is your experience and time. First patreon I've ever supported. Feels pretty great.

Thank you very much for pointing me to Hart Chart! Very useful tool!

Levi Snyder

Gosh, this looks wonderful! Thank you so much!!

Toasty

Sup Toasty, There's actually an incredible tutorial comic already made about that subject, I couldn't even come close to touching it: <a href="https://ironcircus.com/shop/ebooks/72-let-s-print-a-comic-pdf-ebook.html" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://ironcircus.com/shop/ebooks/72-let-s-print-a-comic-pdf-ebook.html</a> I have a copy myself and it's very comprehensive, and written by a pre-press professional, I highly recommend it

Der-shing Helmer

Hey Der-shing, I'm hoping to use this advice productively so I've been digging into a lot of stuff about making printable short comics (because...I'd like to do that someday)! But the most helpful available resources are still pretty intimidating! I'm trying to figure out if there's a Right way to format bleed and trim lines and whether I should worry about backing my blacks and if I need to buy new programs and...all that stuff. These aren't questions I'm trying to put on your plate right now! But if you ever did a crash-course tutorial/process in Getting Your Shit Right For Printing so you don't find yourself with janked colors and blurry lineart, I'd love that. Thanks for all the cool work you do!!

Toasty

That was great, thank you for sharing this! I've been learning this by feeling and guessing but now I have some vocabulary. (I appreciate the French too! Avec accent et tout!) Merci.

Axel Hutt

Thanks so much for making this happen! I've not been able to get back to you since life shit is happening right now. lol

Tym Palmlund

Have you heard of the program "Hart Chart?" It's by the same guy who created Writer Duet (script writing software). It handily helps you plot and track character arcs, plots, pacing, emotional shifts, etc and out puts in neato charts much like the one you've drawn above. (My hubs uses it, it's pretty great)

Joie Foster

there's a delicious dead fish at the top, it's gonna be so worth it

Der-shing Helmer

lol well idk, I keep seeing a similar chart meme'd along with the pixar storytelling posts that get around every so often. All their movies have nearly the same emotional rollercoaster format

Der-shing Helmer

what an honor! Thank you very much, will be bringing more content soon~

Der-shing Helmer

pretty much its only use is for reading and to murder cats and other small animals

I got to the first paragraph and tried to cram Evan Dahm's printing of Moby-Dick in my mouth and died. 0/10.

Thomas Whitney

I finally caved and became a patron of someone. You're my first patreon subscription! Thank you so much for this tutorial!

McJamie

hahaah - tell us about making charts n grafs n maths, "ok maybe all this academia isnt your style" - later in the tutorial, "You've probably seen graphs like these before" loool

Matt Laskowski

I've totally done the blank book thing! though I still struggle with this stuff a lot, so much of it is analyzing the hell out of what I've done poorly XD Little heroic crab on a mountain quest may be the cutest and most inspiring thing I've ever seen, you can do it little guy.

Lorian Merriman

AH cant wait to get into this with the worksheet!!! pacing has always always evaded understanding

Royale Blackman-Holmes

Man I've always loved the humor in these, I laugh so hard I experience every emotion concurrently and through that I remember the whole tutorial. Truly this is my secret learning potential. Thank you for these!

Li Zard

And suddenly it's clear why I write short stories: "Mmmph rmmphr rmphrrrmm mpmph..." (translated: I can fit all the pages in my mouth at once.) But thank you - beautifully explained, as always!

David Pablo Cohn

I made a blank book to use like that when I was trying to start writing my current project- it really helped!

Charity Pomaybo

SO excited to dig into this one! Thank you!
