“The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.”
This city is dead but somehow it keeps dying. The sickness is everywhere. Every pair of eyes on the street is looking around nervously. Waiting for a last-minute save, a cure. But it is not coming. All implants will leak contagion straight to our brains. It’s just a matter of time. Time. It’s minutes to midnight. The port is still empty. Why is it empty?
“S’an easy job, Revoke, okay?” - told me the big black guy in a dirty trench coat I had just met at the bar. “Y’upload the data to your brain drive, y’come to the port on Sunday, y’collect your tee-cees.” He did not mention that this code is a ticking time bomb. Or that half of this rotten city is after it. Knowing my habits, it would not change much anyway.
A thin trail of blood was leaking from the trunk of my car parked by the pier. Like a thread of red wool. Yakuza will follow it and it will lead straight to me. They never stop sniffing when one of them ends up dead. They strike silently and deadly, just like Shinjay did. Nothing in the world would save me. Except for her. I won’t forget the look on her face when I tightened his own monostring around his neck. Jane.
Oh, Jane, sweet Jane Millions. She would not tell me who hired her to protect me but she informed me of the value of the code in my head. Of what it means. For everyone, and for her. I could curse her till the day I die for this knowledge. But that day would be yesterday if it was not for her. Besides, it is not good to speak badly of the dead. Was her sacrifice naive? I saw her last pushing me through a stained-glass window and charging alone into an army of Endo Seekers.
That she could maybe survive. She probably would. But moments later the entire building was obliterated by a single shot from a Hunter Destroyer’s cannon. Would not be the first time Alastor Valdis blew up a church but for sure it was the first time he blew up one of his own. He did not even want to extract the code from my head, he wanted to just cut the whole thing off. For salvation, he said. But there will be none. His followers will die. He will die. Painfully, from the sickness, or more painfully, if I get to them first.
With the thoughts flashing through my mind I did not notice him right in front of me. The shadow that turned into a man. The big black guys from the bar. T-Wet, I think. He smiled, which made me want to rip his throat even more. He noticed.
“I had to get’em off my back, man. Dump the code for just a couple of nights. Also, getting s’mone capable invested in the cause - always a plus.”
I did not see any pluses. I reached for the gun.
“Now, before you kill me, think of the power, Revoke. With that cure in your head, we can save this city, we can burn it to the ground, we can rebuild it, it is all up to us.”
I did not lower my gun until he mentioned the only thing I cared about.
“But first, we must rescue Jane.”
