Writing for Webcomics tutorial

Supplementary worksheets for this tutorial are here

Well... this one was a doozy XD I have never done a tutorial about writing before... I tried to make this as specific to webcomics as possible while making it as general to genre or style as I could... I put years of thoughts on writing into this tut so hopefully you find it helpful and/or interesting.

I usually add my caveat on there but it was already overly wordy so I'll say it here instead: I AM SELF-TAUGHT. I am also neurotic and overthink everything, but that doesn't mean I can't be wrong, or offer advice that doesn't apply perfectly to your scenario. Lots of people like my writing style, and lots of people think it's not the greatest. Every style will resonate and miss(!) with different types of people... The best thing you can do is to look at what other people are doing and, like I always urge, decide for yourself if you'd like to selectively apply any information you find useful :]

Thanks very much to everyone who voted for this topic earlier in the month, the next poll will go up very soon.

Thanks for reading and feel free to share your thoughts!

Oh dang thanks!! QQ I'm so excited to do this worksheet, why is homework so desirable now when I'm out of school haha

Sabrina

No prob! The supplement is going up probably late tonight or tomorrow morning... if you want to be cheap (I am cheap and am reccing this lol), up your pledge to $10 today and collect June's worksheet. Then tomorrow I remove that and put up the new worksheet, and you can grab that too, then drop down to your normal lower pledge (or cancel) before the 1st so you don't get double charged, but you still get 2 worksheets for the price of one B] haha

Thanks for the tutorial! Hopefully I'll still be able to grab the supplemental worksheets when I can up my pledge later this month :o

So fun,* haha. But yeah, a lot of enjoyment comes from the invisible stuff, not just the content itself.

Der-shing Helmer

So glad to hear that XD good luck with your first comic! START SMALL

Haha, I wanted to avoid making you write a zillion words XD It's kind of crappy to make you like, write a script or something, so it's mostly thought exercises, like whiteboard coding. Anyways I hope it helps inform you with some stuff! There's just so many options, right?

Der-shing Helmer

Thank you!! Writing the tutorial took me a few hours and then the formatting took like 2 days, lol... really glad you enjoyed it

maybe it's just because of the late hour, but when I funished reading the tutorial, the urls meekcomic and mare at the bottom blended in my vision and i thought it said "makecomic. com". Seemed suitable. A good, solid tutorial on making comics!

This is great, and I can't wait to see the supplemental materials. I bet you're going to make us write a zillion words, aren't you?! I'm excited though, as I've been actively studying storytelling for the past year and am always looking for new material to help me continue leveling up. I have quite a few comics under my belt already, and each grows steadily longer. I have an active webcomic right now (Clucked - a sci-fi space romp about the last chicken on Earth), and your notes on writing approaches for a lengthy serial format are quite useful. Ours is a print/web hybrid (I know, travesty(!)) so striking that balance for pacing has been a challenge.

Joie Foster

Omg, yes. I am actually planning out my first comic right now. This literally could not have been better timed. I never hear a lot from people who are actively creating webcomics. So awesome! You are also hilarious. U laugh my way through these things. Yes it me

Wow, that was fun*! No but really, this actually displays some of the reasons why I like some webcomics more than others, even if I couldn't explain them myself before.

It's the funniest sentence in the world, I hate it so much. I'll be grocery shopping or driving around when suddenly this quote rushes into my head and I have to do that creepy laughing-to-myself strangle laugh

Der-shing Helmer

This is all great and insightful stuff and I'm glad we can benefit from your experience. That said, I must be honest and say the quote from Magnolia at the bottom is the best part of this whole thing. Sorry.

Thomas Whitney

This tutorial is equal parts informative and hilarious! 10/10, would take tips from Legschilla again. (love the formatting also, very intuitive and smartly done)
