TM Ch4: original thumbs (full PDF)

Here are the original "thumbnails" (they are not actually thumbnails) (they were blue/ mechanical pencil sketches on halves of 8x11 paper) for the chapter, done back in 2007. ALMOST TEN YEARS AGO, scream. This was one of my least favorite chapters, which I realized pretty much halfway through. I hated the new characters in this chapter, I hated the overly slapstick writing and overload of exposition, there was an unnecessary baby, the ending was flat as hell, etc. All of the elements I wanted were sort of there in some form, but arranged properly. LIKE AN UNFOLDED PROTEIN. Anyways I refolded it, but you can see the previous configuration for yourself :]

I agree! Lost had the whole idea of people loosing trust in one another, but then the writers went crazy and stockpiled so much different bullshit... ugh... And I even dropped it before even more was added, afaik! So, anyways, I will assume that Pinter and Angora will engage (at least, behind the scenes) on the topics like "hey, we're both been in the Monastery, what's up with that" and maybe "So, ah, Pinter, my Grandpa isn't exactly a human" too. And those sea devils that Angora definitely knows something about, but couldn't have a chance to talk about... Maybe, I'm asking too much, actually

The "drama ensues because characters don't bother talking to each other" thing drives me nuts. It's so cheap. I think it drove 95% of the action in Lost...

I want to come up with a way of saying how great the writing in the current chapter is and how it's impressive how you transformed it from this early draft without insulting the draft but uh I think I just did? Anyway your art and writing were still pretty damn good 9 years ago and they're even better now!

Thomas Whitney

Oh yeah... that seems very sitcom/ romcom writing to me, I hate it. The only time it makes sense is when characters aren't talking to each other for a natural reason... it happens in Arrested Development a lot where the characters intentionally lie all the time because they are terrible people, which makes all those situations forgiveable and hilarious.

Haha, I decided in the new version that thought bubbles would not be allowed (there is one tiny exception on page 4.11) so unfortunately the devil fish got cut.

Der-shing Helmer

The dreaded Unnecessary Baby. At least it wasn't a Dire Unnecessary Baby.

This is all super interesting. I really enjoy how much more character development there is in the new version versus than this one. Still though, a really enjoyable read. And on the 16th page where Pinter is trying to imagine Etan's 'devil' is the funniest thing lol

Max Damien

Haha, I was talking about Angora filling in Pinter with the info on her quest, her background in Monastery, etc.! That's what I liked! The exposition from the sketch!Etan was weird, I agree. And I totally like how the final-version!Etan talked about the war with Pinter and their whole exchange was on point and felt right P.S. I don't want to call out the comic i was ranting about, but there's one, where whole plot is based too much on things like "character A knows a thing that character B actually needs, but they never talk about it" and also things like "character X doesn't turn around in the exact moment, so misses out on event Z that could have resolved half the storyline right there".

Duke BG

Haha, I like rants. But yeah, the only really important news was that the war that has just started in 3, based on the events in 2, has already reached Caris and is officially recognized as a threat (to the point where people are starting to flee the cities). The rest of it seemed a bit too much info for just a random dude to know (for example irl you don't really hear about the really atrocious stuff until months after, unless Twitter tells you, and unfortunately there is no Twitter in TM) and anyways raw exposition is one of my own peeves. In the new version Pinter says he's worried about his family, who are not Carissi, which is about all I needed to say to show that this is a serious world event.

Der-shing Helmer

Interesting that there was the "getting Pinter up to date" in the old version. I love when characters fill each other in on stuff. Some authors use "this character doesn't know about X yet and thus gets into A Situation because of that" approach a lot in the plot and I really dislike it! Having a character who is bad at communicating things can be a plot device, but don't just rely solely on it for Things to Happen, jeesh. Sorry for the random rant.

Duke BG

lol I know, right... I wanted to share part 2/3 of these thumbs earlier but it was just so different/ spoilery that I couldn't risk it.

Der-shing Helmer

This is a completely different comic
