TITAN CITY STORIES - CYBER CTHULHU
The rumors had been circulating for months before the Investigators had even heard of the Cyber Cthulhu. People were dying in the virtual world, killed by horrors and mutated beasts that were unlike anything anyone had ever seen before. At first, it was thought that these creatures were just advanced virtual programs, designed to provide a greater challenge for those who dared to explore the digital realm. But as the death toll rose, the Investigators began to suspect that something more sinister was at work.
Brush Butcher was a man of many talents, but it was his visions that had always set him apart. He spent his days in his small studio, painting them, trying to capture the essence of the darkness that he felt creeping up all around him. They were seen as the work of a madman, the ramblings of someone who had lost touch with reality. But fellow Investigators found time and again that the paintings depicted actual places and actual danger. Reality can be stranger than a dog riding a skateboard.
Investigators were seeking out clues and following any leads that might shed light on the situation. They visited Brush's studio to examine his latest visions only to find he descended into a state of utter madness. His mind was shattered completely and his eyes were wide and unseeing as he raved about the horrors that were to come. He was surrounded by many paintings of one building.
Detective Joshi sat at the computer terminal in the studio, her fingers flying across the keyboard as she accessed the police database. She searched through countless records of abandoned buildings and structures, trying to find a match for the one in Brush Butcher's painting.
As she searched, the room around her came alive with holographic projections. Countless images and records swirled and swooshed through the air, each one a potential match for the building in the painting. She sifted through the data, her eyes growing weary and her mind beginning to drift.
But then, just as she was about to give up hope, a hologram appeared that caught her eye. It was an image of an old server factory, long since abandoned and forgotten. The hologram matched the building in the painting almost perfectly, from the faded sign above the entrance to the broken windows and crumbling walls.

The investigators have arrived at a sprawling complex that had once been at the cutting edge of digital technology. But now it lay derelict and forgotten, a testament to the rapid pace of technological advancement in the future they inhabited.
Doctor Rutherford lightly tapped his bionic eye and it began to scan the surrounding area. The eye glowed a faint blue, and its lens zoomed in and out as the old doctor moved it across the landscape. The bionic apparatus processed the data in real-time, relaying it to Rutherford's scanner which beeped and buzzed as it analyzed the incoming data, building a detailed map of the area and marking the positions of any potential enemies. The result was displayed as a 3D model of the factory and the surrounding terrain. The map was covered in pulsating red dots, each representing a potential threat.
The rest of the Investigators nodded in agreement, their weapons at the ready. Just as they entered the factory, they heard a low growling sound, and the air was filled with the stench of decaying flesh. They barely had time to react before a swarm of hybrids charged at them, moving with lightning speed and ferocious determination.
The creatures were an unholy combination of flesh and machine, their bodies twisted and tangled with wires, cables, and circuitry. Their heads were encased in VR headsets, which connected them to the virtual realm and gave them supernatural abilities that made them even more deadly.
One of the hybrids knocked down Doctor Rutherford with a single swipe of its claw, sending him tumbling to the ground in a spray of blood. The old man cried out in pain, his bionic eye flashing red as he tried to get back to his feet.
The Investigators quickly formed a defensive line. Soon after others would fall if not for the detector mounted on Father Frossard's back. Every time the mutants approached from a particular direction, the device would turn to that side and swirl, alerting the team to the impending danger. Still, the priest's face was grim, and he knew that the situation was becoming more and more dire by the minute.
Ajey She tended to the injured with precision, utilizing an aerosol of advanced nanobots to mend wounds and administering an array of medicines to stabilize their vital signs and keep them conscious. Meanwhile, Jack Blast's trusty harpoon had long since run out of ammo, and he was now using it to crush skulls in a frenzy of primal rage.
As the team was on the verge of being overwhelmed, Amelie Soares miraculously managed to slip through the swarm of twisted beings, emerging behind the enemy lines. With her whip entangled around a steel bar hanging from the ceiling, she swung herself towards the mass, her legs outstretched to deliver a devastating blow. This unexpected maneuver caught the hybrids off-guard, giving the rest of the team time to regroup and launch a ferocious counterattack. They fought their way through the horde, relentlessly mowing down the twisted creatures until the last of them lay motionless in a pile on the factory floor.
As they took a brief respite, they heard a faint groan emanating from underneath the heap of lifeless bodies. They quickly searched for the source of the noise and soon realized that Amelie Soares had been trapped underneath the pile during the tumultuous fight. They cautiously removed the corpses, revealing her battered and broken body, with limbs twisted at unnatural angles and lacerations covering her form. Ajey rushed to her aid, administering medical care with her trauma team's paddles. The paddles analyzed the faint heartbeat before initiating a succession of jolts to revive her.
It was obvious that Ajay had to stay with the injured if they were to have any chance of survival but the rest had to press on. The creatures that were reported to be lurking in the virtual world were not just advanced programs - they were beings connected to it, living entities that had somehow gained access to the digital realm. Their existence defied all reason and logic, and it was clear that they posed a threat not just to the virtual world, but to the real world as well.

Joshi, Blast, and Frossard crept stealthily through the labyrinthine corridors of the factory, their footsteps echoing eerily against the rusted metal walls. After what felt like an interminable amount of time, they, at last, found themselves peering around a corner at a grim scene.
Four robed figures stood clustered around a strange totem, constructed of an unholy union of ancient electronic equipment, computer screens, and grotesquely mutated creatures hardwired into the apparatus. At the top of the totem, an otherworldly hologram of Cthulhu flickered to life, its ghastly visage pulsing with malevolent energy.
The trio froze in horror as they watched the hologram begin to flicker and distort, its form wavering in and out of existence. It was as if the digital avatar of the eldritch deity was struggling to break free from its electronic prison and emerge fully into the physical world.
Realizing that destroying the totem was their only hope to prevent Cthulhu from fully manifesting in their world, the team quickly came up with a plan. Detective Joshi volunteered to enter the VR world to distract Cthulhu while the rest was to take care of the cultists and destroy the totem which would hopefully stop the transformation. Joshi activated her glasses which ripped tightly into her eyesocket, serving as a compact VR headset. She gasped as her mind encountered the atrocities on the other side. And then, she became silent, the remaining two could only imagine what she was experiencing.
Suddenly, Detective Joshi's body began to convulse, and then she was gone as if her body had become an empty vessel. There was no time to assess whether she could come back, as it seemed whatever she did was working. The process of Cthulhu's materialization had slowed down, and the cultists began to chant even more fervently. It was now or never.
--
Blast sprang from behind their hiding place, charging toward the cultists with his harpoon at the ready. With a single powerful strike, he managed to impale two of them. Frossard acted quickly, using Joshi's gun to take out another cultist. With only one remaining, Blast launched himself at the last cultist, knocking him to the ground and pummeling him relentlessly until there was nothing left of his head.
As Blast stood up, his heart sank as he realized that they might be too late. The physical form of Cthulhu was nearly fully manifested. He made eye contact with the abomination, and that was when a stream of ungodly madness flowed into him. Blast was hit with a vision of a white whale swimming through the universe and crashing down upon the world, washing away all the bad he had ever encountered, cleansing his sins, his trauma, and his burdens.
Frossard knew that the time was running out, as small parts of Cthulhu were still digital. Destroying the totem was their only chance to stop its full revelation. With a grenade hidden in his Bible, he quickly pulled out the safety pin and prepared to throw it at the totem. However, before he could do so, Blast gripped his arm tightly. He was consumed by madness and was determined to protect his new deity.
Frossard struggled to break free, but Blast was too strong. In a moment of desperation, Frossard made a split-second decision and rammed into Blast, causing them both to fall onto the totem. As they hit the ground, the grenade detonated, causing a massive explosion that incinerated their bodies and destroyed the totem.
As the totem crumbled it released a massive shockwave of energy that rippled through the block, shattering windows, collapsing buildings, and tossing cars into the air. The deafening roar of the explosion was heard for miles, and the ground shook violently, causing panic and chaos in the streets. The deafening noise echoed through the city, leaving a stunned silence in its wake.
But amidst the destruction and chaos, the investigators were nowhere to be found. They had all been caught in the blast, their bodies ripped apart, and their lives extinguished in an instant. There were no heroes to celebrate, no sacrifices to honor. They had all perished in obscurity, their names lost in the annals of time.
Yet, even in death, their legacy lived on. In this rare case, Cthulhu had been stopped, at least for now. Trapped in the digital realm with no followers to call upon, he remained dormant, biding his time until he could find new acolytes to do his bidding.
--
After a while, with the eerie visions of Cthulhu almost entirely gone, Butcher Brush has recovered from the brink of absolute madness. From the whole Investigator team, he was the only one to survive, with all his colleagues falling victim to the horrors they had encountered. In his last visions, he saw and understood their sacrifice. Sadly, he knew there was no point in revealing the truth of what had happened. No one would believe him. Except for Karmel.
