Update to Taxes on Patreon

I received the following email recently from Patreon:

"Hey there!

We hope you’re having a good day. We’re writing to give you a heads up about a small change to required GST on Patreon pledges. Patreon already adds sales tax/VAT/GST to pledges from patrons in most US states and several other countries—anywhere that’s required by law.

We’re now required to start adding GST in Canada where the federal rate is 5%, beginning August 1st. In some cases only a portion of your pledge may be taxable, so the rate you are charged may be less than 5%.

It's not just GST. Patreon has expanded the list of taxes that they charge on their services now. It now includes taxes similar to GST, which is a Federal "Goods and Services Tax" that we have in Canada.

I have done everything I can to limit the amount of tax all of you are charged. The bulk of all of my pledge tiers is considered a donation to support my work, but parts of it may be taxable.

I just thought you should know. :)
