I made a chunky one today where I talk ACoTaR, Sailing to Sarantium by Guy Gavriel Kay, and something I’m calling the “spectrum of buffoonery” 😃

2024-07-01 18:31:17 +0000 UTCRead Lions last year on your rec and really loved it! Will probably pick up this duo as well- I also find the Sorkin of it all so very satisfying in these settings. Love the spectrum of Buffoonery! I think I’d place Succession on the opposite end of that Spectrum from the West Wing, which is interesting because I love both of those shows (in very different ways). I think the important thing about being on the Sorkin side of the spectrum in fantasy novels is that the book makes me buy into the exceptionalism of the characters. SJM loses me sometimes by telling me how exceptional her characters are without really proving that out in the story. GGK is really good at building that buy-in on the other hand. (The reason this doesn’t work as well in contemporary political dramas for me either is that all of that in story proof starts to butt up against my personal cynicism in a way that really hinders the buy-in. But the west wing remains massively enjoyable to me as long as I treat it like it exists in a fantasy setting (watching it like “God I wish America were real”) lol
