Intro
Hope everyone is doing well, I wanted to make a post to show off my next project that’s well under way called Gordy. Keep in mind this game is still in the middle of development so it’s a little rough around the edges.
About Gordy
Gordy is a horror game where you play as a man who’s been for years living alone in the forest until one day you come across what seems to be a feral human and befriend them naming them Gordy. The game takes place over several months where the fun time and laughter you share together begins to get overshadowed by a more sinister darkness taking over the forest. (I don’t want to spoil stuff too much so it’s a little vague)
What’s New
Better NPC AI
One of the main features in the game will be the ability to command Gordy and get him to do stuff through whistles. (Examples, Stop, Come To Player, Chase Deer) It’s basically like a simple AI behaviour tree but the player controls it. Then you can have Gordy follow along behind you and help with certain tasks like hunting.
A big reason I am excited for this feature is I’ll be able to expand on it for future games. A good example is for Bite Night 2 there will be customers that come into the diner and I want them to feel more alive where they might go sit down at different tables or go over and talk to somebody in the corner. It just makes them feel a little more alive instead of having a dozen NPC standing in the middle of the room staring at the player.
Open Map
Unlike my first 3 games which basically take place inside of a single building, Gordy's map will be bigger. (Now that I think of it there still might only be one building…) The player will start their day inside their cabin and have to walk around the forest to do stuff before returning to sleep.
While Gordy will be for sure action packed just like the other games I did want to play around with having the player walk around a little more between tasks and use that space to build the tension at times and surprise the player. Don’t worry the game will definitely not be a walking sim where you wander aimlessly for 10 minutes waiting for something interesting to happen. It's just a bit of new level design that I’m challenging myself with to improve my Game Design skill.
Actually Scary
While my previous games have moments of spookiness, for the most part there’s a lot more laughter than screams of terror. For Gordy I’m planning on making it much more scarier than the first 3 games. That doesn’t mean there aren't going to be funny moments or that I’m pivoting away from comedy in my games. It just means in this one I’m looking to nail both aspects of a comedy horror game. Again it’s another challenge I’m giving myself to see if I can make something genuinely scary and I think I can pull it off with Gordy.
