[Background Blog] Beek and Yellow Knife
Added 2019-12-22 13:19:24 +0000 UTCHey everyone! As decided by popular vote, we’ll be covering the topic of Beek and Yellow Knife in this month’s Patreon post. We’ve been eager to show off what we had been working on, so this is the perfect opportunity to give you a peek into what we’ve been dreaming up.
As many of you know from playing Beek, the game follows the tale of someone named Beek who is spirited away to another world. A world where beast men exist no less! The game we released in September is actually the first part of a three-part series set in that universe, so we haven’t seen the last of Veeph and Akro yet. The first game introduced the world as seen through the eyes of Beek, while the second game will give more clarity to the world around him. Finally, the third game will delve into some of the mysteries deep beneath the surface. Without giving too much away, Beek’s place in that world is far more involved than simply being summoned by some demons. We hope to bring these stories to you soon, so please look forward to it!
While the Beek trilogy is a self-contained story, we saw an opportunity to tie it in with one of the other projects we’d been thinking about: Yellow Knife. Since both games take place in a Medieval-style setting, we thought it would be the perfect fit to meld the universes into one. We’ve covered Yellow Knife in a previous Patreon update, and you check out those details here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/blog-overview-of-30306672. Expanding on the map and battle system we’d previously covered, we’re exploring ideas for unlocking and collecting new characters, building a character relationship system, and implementing a light gameplay mode to fit into everyone’s busy schedules.
Naturally, building a game with all of these mechanics while still delivering a quality experience will take time, and we’ve also got our hands full with Project Carmacks and the next Beek game (and Astatos too!), so you can imagine that the potential development of this game is still a ways off. In the meantime, we’ve been toying with the idea of building a smaller spin-off game within the Yellow Knife world that we’re excited about. In the game’s story, you’d still be the commander of the band of mercenaries from Yellow Knife, but you find and adopt your very own malamute child to raise. It’s up to you to raise him as your own!
The game mechanics would include things like planning the child’s day, coordinating their studies with other members of your mercenary group, and interacting with your child on a regular basis. Some of the characters from Yellow Knife would also be in this spin-off, so you would see some familiar faces between the games. This game would be designed to take place in real-time, with tasks assigned to your child taking time to complete, so you won’t have to spend too much time monitoring and managing your child’s life. Of course, you could always open the game to check up on him whenever you want!
So what do you folks think? Are you excited to see more of Beek and the world he’s in? How about Yellow Knife; do the game mechanics intrigue you? Or would you rather try your hand at raising your own malamute child? We’re excited to hear your thoughts, so let us know what you think in the comments below. (And if you’re at the right tier, be sure to check out the concept artwork we’ve posted!)
That’s all for now! As always, we greatly appreciate the support of each and every one of our Patreon members. Tune in next month for another exclusive peek at what we’re working on behind the scenes, and be sure to follow us on the Studio Klondike twitter for the latest announcements on new games and products we’re releasing.
