Konoha, Land of Fire [Naruto Age - 4]

–Tsunade Senju–

She suppressed a yawn as she watched all the clan brats play around, in a playpen specially earmarked for them, during the birthday party of the heir of the Hyuga Clan. Honestly, it was more like a reason to gather the adults and show off the clan’s wealth to the rest of the village, than a birthday party. It was not like the Hyuga Princess needed an extravagant birthday party right now.

Not when she just turned four years old. Maybe when she was older, she might crave the attention that all brats crave when they inevitably enter puberty.

Her gaze roved over the entirety of the gathering in this palace, all the important movers and shakers of Konoha, with even Sensei making a short stop before going back to his work, as people engaged in politics.

She shivered at the sheer disgust she felt at the mere notion of that. Thank Kami that the only people in the Senju Clan right now were her, Kushina, and her brat.

Speaking of her brat, she turned to the side, keeping Naruto in his vision, as he played around with the other kids, as a child should. Happy and content, with a dash of stupidity sprinkled in between, disguised as adorable missteps.

The kid was happy and that was what mattered the most. Sure, he was going to grow up to be an absolute monster, with the way his chakra training was proceeding, but right now? He was just happy to be surrounded by people his age.

Her gaze slid from the blond hellion to the slightly older Uchiha watching over all the children. The Uchiha Clan Heir.

Itachi Uchiha.

Already a Chunin, and the kid’s balls haven’t even dropped yet. At least it was a small mercy that with Kushina raising as much havoc as she had on all the battlefields, the chances of that kid and even Naruto seeing war were reduced substantially.

Well, she knew that was the end goal of Kushina anyway so she was being very successful with her moves.

Even now, she was out on the borders, defending it, and then obliterating whoever was sent to attack Konoha. War was officially not declared but that did not mean the Other Villages did not purposefully try to provoke Konoha.

The frequency had dropped when Kyushina revealed her ability and, more importantly, willingness to use her abilities as both a Jinchuriki of the Nine Tails and also as a Fuinjutsu Grandmaster to level entire enemy lines to rubble and blood mists.

Even she shivered at the thought of facing a Bijuuidama from someone who was already on the other side of the country by the time you blinked.

The Kage and the Daimyo, wisely realised that this was a losing battle and the way Kushina had demonstrated her ruthlessness meant that facing her would be worse than facing Minato. Because of that, the attacks on Konoha reached an all time low, as all the other villages took their warning to heart except one.

Kumo.

That damned Raikage was too stubborn to take the loss, and unfortunately, he was one of the only few shinobi alive who could actually take on Kushina and survive. Capable of taking on the Nine Tails’ chakra, and matching the sheer speed and unpredictability of the Flying Thunder God made the Fourth Raikage the only shinobi to have directly fought Kushina and come out unscathed, ever since that day.

Suppressing yet another yawn, she ignored the convoluted talks of the people around her, as she stood up and approached the play pen of the brats. She was getting sleepy and when Kushina was not home, it was her official duty to take care of Naruto, an unspoken agreement between her and Kushina as it allowed Kushina to do the thing she swore not to do when she finally came back to Konoha.

Combat Missions. Killing people en masse.

She came and stood right next to the Uchiha heir, sensing the intense gaze of the Uchiha Clan Head on her, as she spoke, “You are the Uchiha brat who tried to enroll in my Medics course, aren’t you?”

“Yes,” he replied quietly, his gaze never straying from his younger brother, Sasuke Uchiha if she remembered correctly.

“Why didn’t you come to the next exam?” She ended up asking a question that had been bugging her in her free time. By all means, the Uchiha heir was a prodigy in making, but so far, she had only seen that in violence, but when he came by to take the initial screening test, she was interested to find out that he had immense potential to become a Medic.

A combat prodigy who could also become a medic? He was like her, except his combat talents lay not in punching harder or faster, but in the mind games that the stronger Uchiha were known for.

When she didn’t receive a reply, she ventured, “Clan politics? The old vultures did not approve, I assume?”

The subtle nod was all the answer she needed, as she placed her hand on top of the kid’s head–god, he was so young–, and turned around, dragging the brat to Fugaku Uchiha, who stood up, as all the talking ceased at her approach.

To the brat’s credit, he flawlessly changed his gait, allowing him to walk as comfortably as possible, towards Fugaku who remained stone faced at the sight, though she could never tell with the Uchiha.

“What business might you have with my son, Tsunade-dono?” Fugaku asked curtly, his eyes moving over to her hand in a meaningful way.

She rolled her eyes at that, not having the patience to do it the subtle way, “I am taking the brat to be my disciple. He will learn to be a medic, he has great talent for it.”

Fugaku grit his teeth, “Itachi is the clan heir, and despite what you might think, you cannot do as you please. The Elders–”

She interrupted the spiel, lifting Itachi by the head, looking into his eyes, “Do you wish to be my disciple and learn everything I can teach you?”

Fugaku remained silent as she waited for a reply and after almost a minute, a small but determined “Yes,” escaped Itachi’s lips, drawing a triumphant smirk from her as she replied, “Come meet me tomorrow morning at the hospital. We’ll start your training then.”

With that, she tossed him towards the playpen, knowing that he was capable of handling the fall, and turned around to face Fugaku, eyes raised in a clear challenge.

Fugaku, instead of looking angry, just looked tired and resigned, which was not what she expected to see. Fugaku sighed and replied, “Look, I am not against Itachi’s wish to become a medic. He has great potential to be a field medic, which is the best of both worlds, but it is the elders. They wish to–”

She waved him off, “What those old fossils want is inconsequential. Tell them I have officially taken Itachi in, and I don't think they will like it if I have to pound that lesson into their minds. I hope to see Itachi on time tomorrow." Her piece said, she turned around and left, a smile on her face as she looked forward to tomorrow.

On the plus side, it would also make Sensei back off, and the joy of seeing his tired, troubled face as she fulfilled his request in the most headache-inducing way would be well worth the annoyance of seeing the Uchiha old coots a few times in the next few days.

That would be necessary only until they learn their lesson and stop interfering.

More than the kid’s chakra control, it was his mindset and his answers in the exams that had drawn the interest of both her and Kushina, who was partially responsible for all the complex questions the new tests had, weeding out just the healers from battlefield medics capable of turning the tide of a battle.

–Kushina Uzumaki–

Her vision flashed red for a second as she appeared in the courtyard of the Senju Estate, the wards surging forth before they faltered as they identified her.

With a jump, she reached the first floor, opened the window to Naruto’s bedroom, and sneaked in. There was some trouble on the Iwa front, about some rogue shinobi attacking the outposts one after the other, destroying and pillaging the villages on the border. Once they were sent off to the Pure Lands, she came back here.

Naruto, evidently tired from all the fun he must have had, was tuckered out. Kissing his forehead, she snuggled right next to him, as she let his peaceful aura relax her. Bit by bit, sleep claimed her, as the exhaustion caught up to her, not chakra or physical but mental exhaustion.

[3 years later] [Naruto Age - 7]

“You can do it, Naruto,” She said gently, as Naruto worked on the advanced chakra control track she had set up for him, consisting of multiple variations of everything basically. Raging whirlpools, reminiscent of her clan, still water, dense sludge, quicksand, and more, all so that his chakra control would improve.

Over the past year or so, she had been having Naruto work on basically this, his Caligraphy for Fuinjutsu, and the Rasengan control exercises. He was already making his own Storage seals with ease, was on the second stage of the Rasengan training and today was the day he swore he was going to pass this training course, with all the adorable determination his face could show.

She should know. She had the pictures to prove it.

He was at the last stage now, with the strongest whirlpool in tow, after which the trick Quicksand, which was capable of syphoning off chakra, lay. Only two things left.

She leaned forward, as did Itachi-kun, who was here to act as the field medic since Tsunade was busy teaching a lecture for the introduction of the new batch of medics.

“Come on,” she whispered.

Her fists clenched as he balanced his feet on the whirlpool, his feet glowing a subtle blue as he took one step after the other. Even after being the one who had set up that course, she still remained on edge, fists clenched, as she watched her baby clear something that would leave full grown Elite Chunin on their last breath. Even then, they would not be able to cross the quicksand, especially if they did not know of its chakra eating capacity beforehand.

“Should we stop?” Itachi-kun asked her and she had to violently squash the urge to blurt out yes!

“No,” She said instead, resolutely, hoping that Itachi-kun did not hear her voice breaking. She knew firsthand the effects of drowning in that Quicksand and she had been expecting it. Itachi-kun was also a frequent user of this course, and he described the sensation as drowning in chakra as the chakra was painfully pulled from their body, creating a tingly sensation in and out of his body.

Her child was still small and if it were up to her, he would be nowhere near this, but he had set his sights on surpassing this insurmountable obstacle, and she never had the heart to say no to her baby.

As Naruto took his first step on the Quicksand and that step sank with his eyes widening in shock, she shot to her feet, chair clattering behind as half a dozen Adamantine chakra chains shot out of her back, lunging towards Naruto, only to halt as if they hit an invisible wall. Her fists were clenched white, as she restrained her instincts, as Naruto placed both his palms on the ground as well, his face sweating profusely, his hands glowing blue as well.

Slowly, as if against their will, the chakra chains retreated inside her body, as she watched Naruto balance himself on all fours before lifting his leg out of the Quicksand, the entire limb covered in faint blue. Her eyes also noticed the slight tearing on the Quicksand, as her baby boy used Wind Nature Chakra to reinforce his leg.

She smiled proudly, blinking through her tears as Naruto precariously balanced himself on two legs once more, his hands still glowing blue though, as he hesitantly took a step forward, sinking once more, but this time, she did not react as her baby boy reacted with ease, pulling himself out of the Quicksand.

“Quite an unorthodox means of passing that, don’t you think?” Itachi-kun stood next to her and chuckled. She understood the slight jab. After all, Tsuande hadn’t allowed Itachi-kun to do the same thing to pass the course. Her standards really were hellish, requiring Itachi-kun to pass the course essentially twice.

Once on his legs, and once on his hands.

“Yes, but one that is enough for me. You should really find a less demanding and more importantly, less lazy sensei,” She glanced sideways at him as she teased him for his workload, which was basically the entire workload of Tsuande as she dumped all her official duties on Itachi-kun here, while she enjoyed the perks of that title.

Granted, she intended to pass that title to him in a year. In her own drunken words, slurred as they were, Itachi-kun now knew everything she knew, including the small diamond on his forehead, slowly gathering excess chakra, all in a bid to become the scariest Uchiha she knew.

If things kept up as they were, she was sure that Itachi-kun would soon surpass his cousin, Shisui-kun who was also an absolute hellion, the only shinobi in Konoha with whom she could spar and practice with the Flying Thunder God, since the teenage Shinobi was so fast that anyone save for Hiruzen would never be able to catch up to him.

“No,” Itachi-kun said, with fondness in his voice, “She is the perfect sensei for me.”

She chuckled, moving her attention to Naruto as he took the last step and all but slumped over, completely exhausted. Her vision flashed red as she appeared in front of Naruto, hugging him as he looked up at her with eyes half lidded.

“You succeeded," She said proudly as Naruto smiled at her before slumping over. Itachi, only a moment late, appeared next to her, his hands glowing a brilliant green as he hovered over Naruto.

After only a moment, he declared, “He is fine, just a little chakra exhaustion. He should be awake soon. A little rest for the day would be recommended.” Itachi gave his clinical analysis, as she nodded at him.

“Thank you for coming. I know you have been busy with the–”

“Kushina-san, please. Tsunade-sama would have killed me if she found out that I didn't come here for Naruto.”

She nodded, “I will see you at dinner.”

Itachi smiled, bowed, and left. To his duties, presumably.

The boy was just as dedicated to his work as Tsunade was to escaping it.
