Character Potential Doesn't Excuse Lazy Writing

I would not be surprised if the Wittebanes were a situation similar to “The Hobbit”‘s status in the Legendarium of Arda, ie Dana wrote a SPOOKY GHOST STORY when she was fourteen and kept it around because she was proud of it. And later on, when she was figuring out what to do with her villain and that design she liked (ie after she changed Obron to Belos and made him the Emperor instead of the Emperor’s advisor and needed to figure out what to do with the Prince William design), she dug out that old ghost story and expanded out its second half (where the Grimwalker meets the character who would become Evelyn and she recognises him as the spitting image of her slaughtered husband and he sacrifices himself to save her from the Witch Hunting Puritans by dragging himself and the Murderous Brother/the character who became Philip aka Belos down into the watery depths of an icy cold lake) out across the entire second and third seasons.

This is such a wild view. I still think GOW has been a in a golden era this past year. It's lovely to see the ideas you've been sharing for years being compiled into neat packages that explain everything in such a clear, digestable way. Because, really, I used to watch GOW with the intent of reading between the lines, digesting the concept, and coming up with a solid conclusion for myself. But lately? Every time you've uploaded something it's been like "Yes, yes, YEAH EXACTLY, that's what I've been saying, oh wow I didn't think of that but now that you mention it that's so true," and it's nuts. Now I can like actually point to your videos and go "Look, she explains this way better than I could. Watch it and you'll see what I'm getting at," which is so useful and kinda exciting tbh. Anyway, this one hit REALLY hard as somebody who love characters for their potential, somebody who LOVES the angsty white boy trope (guilty pleasure of mine 🥲, though I prefer that trope on a side character instead of a main character), has had several obsessions with glup shittos in the past, and someone who also hates when the fanon version of a character is treated like canon. Like you are SO right. I don't watch TOH, but it doesn't matter because this concept applies to ANY fandom. Hell I think the best example would probably be the Miraculous Ladybug fandom. The ENTIRE fandom is based solely around potential that was never realized, to the point where the creators just started taking MLB fanfic tropes and inserting it into their stories. As time has gone on, thank God some people have come to their senses that no, it's not a GOOD show, it just has great ideas in it that you like. But yeah, I am ALWAYS the one stringing together whatever vague/loose character traits a character had, taping it together with literary duct tape, and filling in holes with headcanons that would make the character work better. When I was younger though? Yeah, I mistook the ABILITY to make something intriguing out of the pieces as being the same thing as the final product being good to begin with. It can be a hard thing to accept when you've poured so much love into a character, or hell, even a fictional world. I think some people do this with certain universes that have intriguing concepts in them as well. One point that you didn't make is that when the character is really obscure and has almost no character to speak of (like me fixating on those God damned Sugar Rush racers when I was a middle schooler), it's easy to convince yourself that you're not as delusional as other people doing this same thing with the popular characters. Which just isn't true. You're not "less basic" or whatever :') Working with something that was "nothing" by DESIGN and making it your own isn't THAT much different than working with something that is "nothing" out of failure or because you just don't like their canon personality and wanna change it. If you're not careful, you'll turn into one of those people begging for bg ponies to have their own episodes. (Or in my case, wishing the SR racers had their own series.) On an unrelated note, I was very pissed when Ralph Breaks the Internet came out and Calhoun & Felix taking care of the SR racers seemed like it was gonna be a subplot and then it... didn't happen. The only reason I think my seething was kinda justified was because she and he were so important to Wreck it Ralph and like, not having them be an active part of the sequel was stupid :/ But, if we're honest, the thing I was more upset about was not seeing more of the SR racers. I had a fandom brainrot moment there :')
