When he talks about eating a roach and making a lot of money, he's referring to the Yonkers music video where he eats a roach. That was one of his hit songs that's contributed to him blowing up

I’m glad you enjoyed this more than the others, especially treehome95, rusty, and lone. Gives me high hopes for how you’ll receive the rest of the albums.
The narrative of this album is definitely present but a lot looser than Bastard or Goblin. The music videos help but it definitely does not give solid answers to questions presented on first listen.
To answer your question to fans. I have been listening to Tyler since 2012 when I was a freshman in high school. He definitely helped me relate on issues related to my father and unrequited loves I had at the time. As well fitting in in general. I definitely didn’t have any extreme ideas or anything like that and also didn’t take those types of lyrics seriously. But the spirit of going against pop culture definitely was the main draw to Odd Future in general. Plus, the music was good.
As I’ve grown as a man now in his late 20s. I don’t resonate with the same teenage angst. But thankfully Tyler did not stay in that lane. As he grew and and matured, so did his music. Early Tyler could not make Current Tyler’s music, and Current Tyler doesn’t want to make Early Tyler’s music.
There are some who only want pre-Cherry Bomb Tyler and some who only want post. But I have loved every single version of Tyler for what they are. Because I like my artist to develop along with their lives.
Very interested to see what you think about Cherry Bomb. Hope your personal situation is going ok.

A lot of your questions get answered if you watch the music videos relevant to era lol. Visuals tie a lot of information and character relationships together. The roach is from the Yonkers video that turned it viral, because he actually ate it and it didn’t go down well lol
The inspiration for Partyisntover is the feelings Tyler had when losing his virginity btw
Trash Wang is another nickname based off OF’s friendship with a band called Trash Talk at the time.
There won’t be any more after this but any song with Taco and Jasper (Tina, BSD, Trashwang) is generally a fuck around song where they aren’t taking it seriously. Taco was the exception this time because he made a real effort but that was also because they were making fun of super serious, posse cut songs.

had to pop in a couple days late to just add to the conversation: feels like people downplay cherry bomb quite a bit in the comments and the forum but tbh it's one of my fav albums from tyler cuz it's the most punk rock he's ever went and there's loads of creative choices that work for me (especially highlighted when u listen to just the instrumentals) so if there's nobody else, at least i personally will be VERY excited for you to do that reaction ♥️

Please React to the music video to "IFHY" it’s so abstract but I love it! And the roach he’s mentioning is from the music video "Yonkers" where he ate a roach and hung himself in the music video and that kinda broke Tyler into the mainstream and got him noticed by everyone other than his cult fanbase etc.💯

Tyler somehow went from making school shooter music, to incel music, to sad boy music, to black boy joy music, to loverboy music, to cool ass party goer fashionista music lol
truly a journey..

To get the vibe for this one I recommend the music videos for Yonkers, IFHY, Sam is Dead, and Oldie. Some of the clips from Loiter Squad (their tv show). The narrative is more vibes based than clear.

wolf's storyline is pretty foggy overall. there's a general consensus that some of the songs obviously don't relate to the plot at all, but the plot is really obfuscated. it took me a bit to even figure it out. BUT i loved this reaction and i'm happy you've gotten to the more palletable albums!

Also to answer your question about how early fans perceived his evolution. His older works resonated with me as a teen not because I agreed with the violence in his lyrics, but the energy behind those words could be applied to how I felt. And Tyler's rebellion and edgy behavior was something I admired because of how anxiety ridden I was. Come to find out, I'm autistic, and I feel like his music served as an outlet for all the complex emotions I was feeling. And as he grew and evolved his art, I grew up with him. I wasn't the biggest fan of Cherry Bomb and Flower Boy because it's so different from what I was used to, but with time they quickly became favorites. I am curious though about how many early fans stopped listening to Tyler because they only wanted the edgy stuff

You should do a reaction to a breakdown of this trilogy to help you understand it better
Beef Boi
2025-09-05 00:34:55 +0000 UTC
I hope you can see why this is a lot of people's favorite from the trilogy.
The issue with this album as it relates to the trilogy is that it's more of a standalone story that's only loosely related to the alters introduced in Bastard and Goblin. And navigating the songs can be tricky because sometimes Tyler uses the alters as more of a general vibe to approach the song with, and sometimes the song is meant to be from the alters perspective.
Here's a quick overview.
Wolf introduces our main characters, Wolf and Sam. Cowboy is from the perspective of Sam, exploring his personality and mental state. During the song, Wolf asks Sam who Salem was and Sam responds saying she's his girlfriend. That transitions into Awkward, a love(?) song written by Sam for Salem. Fast forward to Slater, Sam is expressing his love for his bike, and desire to just spend time with Salem. At the end of PartyIsntOver/Campfire/Bimmer, Sam finds out from a friend that Wolf was hanging out with Salem and so IFHY is from his perspective, feeling betrayed by Salem. Pigs is an explanation of what happened with Sam at home, revealing his violent tendencies brought on from bullying.
The events of PartyIsntOver/Campfire/Bimmer is Wolf hanging out with Salem, not Sam cheating. So you were right, just the other way around. It's also worth noting that because Sam is a bit of an unreliable narrator, it's unclear if he and Salem are actually dating or if they just shared a kiss and he became obsessed. Meaning it's hard to say if Salem cheated or was just spending time with Wolf because she was single and interested.
As a result of feeling betrayed, Sam starts hunting Wolf in Parking Lot. And eventually finds and kills Earl in Rusty. This is more or less the conclusion of the story, short of a few moments after this. But this is pretty much all of the major plot points.
Beyond that, a couple smaller things I wanted to explain:
The roach that he references throughout the album was from the Yonkers music video. In the video he bites into a cockroach and the shock value is part of what blew Tyler up early on. For a while, Yonkers was his biggest song.
And Colossus is loosely based on a real experience he had. Exaggerated to express how he felt with it

Ahhh wolf!!! I adore this album, so so important to me, probably in my top 10 rap albums ever. you have questions, so, answers-
The roach is a reference to the yonkers music video where tyler eats a roach, no metaphor lol, it was viral, you can watch it but TW for suicide at the end.
and i got you with the storyline questions lol, sometimes he’ll make reference to things out of continuity (like calling himself wolf on a sam song or mentioning something from sam in a wolf song) because it’s a song first story second thing, but-
i’ll summarize it. Wolf (who is essentially a fictionalized Tyler) is brought to summer camp due to TC’s concern, meets Sam and his totally girlfriend Salem. Sam talks about himself and meeting Salem, before Wolf talks about his friends (Domo, Hodgy), and his father, etc on answer. Back to Sam for Slater and 48, detailing Sam’s life, and then colossus, detailing Wolf meeting a fan. Later that night, after a dance and campfire, Wolf takes Salem to the lake, Sam gets back from dealing, furious, and rants about his relationship. Meanwhile, Salem tells Wolf about Sam’s path. Sam gathers his gang, Loiter Squad, kills Earl, and fights Wolf, Salem then goes back to Sam and sings him a song as everyone is obviously about to be sent away. Tamale and Lone are self explanatory, leading right into Goblin. IMO, TC was originally a real person, but after being rejected from the summer camp where he finally started to feel like he fit in, he snapped, gaining a new alter in TC (hence why he’s so much more of an asshole on Goblin) in an asylum, killing all of his friends, and, and merging his alters…. *i think*
on the “i’m sam and that’s tyler” line, the answer i like most is that “tyler” was there, and did know sam, but a different alter was in control so he didn’t remember, and sam *tries* to not think about back home so he doesn’t recall.
aaand if all that wasn’t enough;
sam songs: wolf, cowboy, Awkward, slater, 48, IFHY, Pigs, Parking Lot, Treehome(this is debated, but with context from Her from Goblin, I think this is obviously Sam.)
wolf songs: Jamba, domo23, answer, colossus, partyisntover/campfire/bimmer, rusty, trashwang, tamale, lone
hope that wasn’t too much 😭

I think ‘Lone’ is one of Tyler’s best songs, even compared to his later work, because it’s the first time he completely drops the shock value and characters to speak honestly about grief and family. The stripped-down production makes his words hit harder, and it feels like the emotional climax of the Wolf trilogy. It also planted the seeds for the vulnerability and growth that defined his albums later on..... We are getting closer to flower boy 😭 😭 😁😁😁 so excited

For me, this album is easily one of his best. The subject matter and immaturity is still grating to some people but the production and rapping is top notch across the whole project imo.

This is basically the album he was trying to make the first 2 times but wasn’t there yet creatively or in terms of maturity. It’s still rough around the edges but you can really start to see his talent. Also you can hear the shift from Earl sweatshirt who was sent away to a boarding school in Samoa in between his verse on “Assmilk” and “Rusty”. Doesn’t even sound like the same person (still was only 19 at the time).
