Queen of the Pale Ch 1-4 Preview
Added 2019-12-15 16:14:25 +0000 UTCHello! As promised, here is the enormous preview for December! Please let me know what you think of the characters and world building and such.
I am still deciding whether or not I want to make a zoomed in version of the main map since this story takes place entirely in the north, but here is Darenthi as it stands now.
Edit; removed for release version

2019-12-16 01:54:51 +0000 UTCThat’s one reason I love your books so much is your exploring of your own worlds to see the alternative universes of same world if that makes sense

2019-12-16 01:51:04 +0000 UTCThe new Spider Queen book was the "alternate timeline" where the good guys lost so it's kinda confusing. :P

2019-12-16 01:49:19 +0000 UTCI get ya, it’s more I’m curious about the state of the world at the time of it. Would the newest spider queen book be after ranger sub 2?

2019-12-16 01:46:57 +0000 UTCEven though this new one will be in the same world, I want it to be readable without any prior knowledge

2019-12-15 22:56:20 +0000 UTC"The innocent gallant tempted by the lascivious queen." It felt very Lancelot & Guinevere, at least at first. Definitely goes in a different direction, though. I'm thinking specifically about the stuff on regional politics, especially re: the usurption, the civil war, Thedric's ascent to the throne, etc. It seems like much of that is established later? Again, though, total nitpick.

2019-12-15 22:21:43 +0000 UTCWhat trope do you mean specifically? Is there any specific exposition you find unnecessary? It's a really fine balance at the start of something, and I'm trying to assume a reader knows nothing about my previous work. Thanks for the comments!

2019-12-15 22:11:01 +0000 UTCWhile the first two chapters seem to play on an all-too-familiar trope, I was still eating it up. Love the idea of a relatively innocent protagonist. The first intimate scene was tame, but the earnestness & illicitness made it very exciting. The shift in POV in chapter 3 really makes the story, though. Delaryn actually has a complex interior life! And agency! Just as I was getting skeeved out by [spoiler], she [spoiler]! I read that & cheered. I’m hoping Sehris will get the same treatment; she tended to melt into the background – understandably, given that she spent most of the first chapter gagged and chained. World building is awesome, of course. The Chol are creepy, and withholding the reveal only adds to that. The wraithblade & its ability to dip into the Pale makes for some interesting action sequences. I do wonder if you need quite so much exposition at the beginning, though. It makes the political situation VERY clear, but maybe TOO clear? Or too front-loaded? That's very much a nitpick, though.
