As always, I recommend re-reading the preview chapters if you care about lore minutiae because there are always some tweaks. :) I settled on a few things:

Space Travel

Most ships use a hyperdrive, but unlike Star Wars it doesn't shift vessels into an alternate dimension thing. The drive tunnels out a "corridor" through real space where FTL movement is possible, kind of like a warp bubble in Star Trek. Ships without a hyperdrive - like a lot of merchant and convoy ships - use pre-tunneled "jump corridors that take them on a set destination. (If you ever played the old PC game Freelancer, imagine those tunnel things you would use to quickly move from one place to another).

The class of a hyperdrive represents how many light-years it can travel in an hour, typically from 1-10.

Raxyl and Cole

Originally, the two of them had only known each other for about 4-5 years, but in the final version they have been friends for longer. They were both part of the Red Ring pirates until Raxyl built the Wild Gazack  and escaped. Cole stowed away on the ship. (Notably, this also means that Raxyl was never in a Vec labor camp).

Aliens

I'll eventually put together an appendix thing with the different races that will show up in the inevitable anthology version and maybe before. I just don't want to bog folks down with extraneous info in the first book.

Comments

I do think just going off to join the Dominion is far too pat, especially given your preference in previous stories for harsh realpolitik, so I doubt that they'll stay aligned with them for the whole story. Also, Cole and Raxyl are just too gosh-darn free-spirited to get tied down by the oppressive conformism of a fascist culture. The reveal that Cole was a precog was so ridiculously apparent that I'm glad Raxyl knew all along and was just deferring to his friend and partner's obvious complex about it. That Kaveri was actually what she was shouldn't've caught me by surprise, and I'm disgusted with myself for not figuring it out sooner. I mean, you summarized this whole story at one point for crying out loud! I do think the Convectorate admiral being such a vicious savage was a bit... I mean, part of me is *sure* it's all an elaborate ploy, to make us, like Cole, buy Kaveri's line that the Dominion are the "good guys" and they're the "bad guys" while the actual situation is much more complex and less clear-cut, but if this is gonna get walked back at some point, I'm not sure how. Interested in the next book, even if I'm not 100% drinking the kool-aid with the indoctrinated super-soldier here.

I see. My guess is that the blades maybe have some ulterior motives, hmmmm, maybe only the teacher of Kaveri ( forgot his name)

Linarian

I can't really say much without spoilers, but since it is me you can always count on a couple of things: 1) At least one part of the "conventional wisdom" will be wrong 2) Someone, possibly multiple someones, are not what they appear 3) New powers will somehow be used in a sex act :P

How close is Cole's potential as a phychic to that of the original Seraph? Are we going on the route of the mc having vast untapped potential? I'm not against it, just curious. :D
