Added 2018-03-04 20:55:09 +0000 UTCHey, guys. I thought I would give a bit of a lore preview as I continue work on the next book. The tentative series title is "Wings of the Seraph." I'm not sure yet if Book 1 will just use that title or if I'll go with "The Master's Jewel."
I should have a chapter preview ready for you this week. Here's a tiny bit of info that is, of course, all subject to change.
~Political Factions~
The Convectorate
Originally founded by the Tarreen (see below), the Convectorate is now a multi-species alliance forged to stand against humanity's powerful psychics and psionic technology. While the "Vecs" suffered serious casualties in the last war, they are widely considered the winners, having forced the Dominion into an uneasy armistice.
The Convectorate is basically the law in the region of the galaxy where the first book takes place.
The Dominion
The Dominion was founded several centuries ago by the followers of the first known human psychic, the Seraph. Thanks to their unique psionic technology, humans quickly became the dominant force in the known galaxy. The last war was costly, however, and drove the Dominion back to a few dozen systems in a single region.
In addition to its powerful psionic technology, the Dominion is defended by the Blades of the Seraph, elite, psychogenetically-enhanced warriors who serve as the Empress's personal assassins, bodyguards, spies, and anything else necessary to get the job done.
~Races~
Velothi
The blue alien babes of the setting, the Velothi are a slender, humanoid people with horns, tails, and luminescent eyes. Many of them live in slavery, and some have been genetically-engineered with empathic abilities, allowing them to "imprint" themselves upon their first master.
Kali
The Kali are slender reptillian humanoids whose scales change color based upon their mood. They are typically very "vulcan-like" in terms of disposition.
The Kreen
The red-skinned alien babes of the setting, the hedonistic Kreen have incredibly high internal body temperatures. "Don't get scalded while shagging a Kreen."
The Tarreen
Tall, powerful reptilians with nearly impenetrable scales. Tarreen society is governed by "The Pact," a caste system that rigidly places people by the color of their scales. They were a dominant galactic power in the past and actually enslaved humans before the Seraph led a rebellion against them.

The Tarreen were definitely Bad Guys™ in the past before humanity unlocked psionic abilities and overthrew them. But yeah, the Dominion isn't exactly good either. Without going too in-depth yet, both governments have spent a prolonged cold war reaching out to other races and forging new alliances. Part of the development with the Tarreen specifically is that some of their former slave races (the Manoth and Subari, both of whom have been genetically-modified as a servant caste for a long time) managed something of an internal coup and have taken some power for themselves. As a race, the Tarreen are strong but not numerous, so they have always relied on a vast network of robots and servants to actually run their empire. Now that the servants have claimed some power, the Convectorate is a tad more egalitarian.

Given previous stories’ apparent preference for realpolitik over clear-cut good guys and bad guys, I won’t ask which is which. Both governments are probably jerks, but their people are probably just people. But I am curious about one thing. Why have several other governments made common cause with the Tareen? Is it just that a once-enslaved humanity is now just as bad as their oppressors? Did the Tareen just enslave them too?
