In the future, Earth is ruled by Eternals, an advanced and secret sect of beings who reign over a savage group called Brutals. The Eternals have created a god named Zardoz to intimidate the Brutals, making them believe that killing is their natural state. However, Zed (Sean Connery), a Brutal warrior, challenges that assumption when he enters the Zardoz monument and is captured by an Eternal (Charlotte Rampling). There, he learns the truth about the Eternals and the false god that rules society.

I have always enjoyed Zardoz. At first just for its novelty value, but it continued to grow on me. Starting with its audacity – that sense that we are watching a bunch of Ren Faire cosplayers run amuck while creating beautiful sights and sounds on what I assume was a fairly low budget... as well as the audacity of Sean Connery putting on that outfit and playing along. At one point, he licks other guy's hand to show his docility! But in the end, it actually is a character and a role that's a good fit for Connery! Terry – I think you use the terms "strange, weird and bizarre," as though that is one option and the other option is that it's a good movie. For me, I love a movie that is strange, weird and bizarre, as long as I also feel its heart is in the right place. Repo Man, Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, Mulholland Drive... (funny, now that I name those titles, I'm not 100% sure "their heart is in the right place." Maybe I should have named Fifth Element instead :-) Anyway, I hope my unusual movie picks so far have kept people engaged and/or entertained.

Analytical Guy

I'd never watched this before, although I had heard of it and had just never gotten round to seeing it...and now I have.... Um, it was different and I can honestly say that I've never seen anything like it before, I'm not sure anything like it has ever even been made before so it was certainly unique and an experience.....did I like it ????? Well, it was either the most strange, weird and bizarre film I've watched OR the most uniquely classic sci-fi dystopian movie of it's time , I just can't decide which..... what it definitely delivers on is it's ability to provoke thought and discussion.....and at the end of the day that's what I believe a good movie should do...so thanks Analytical Guy for the recommendation, I'd be interested in knowing some of your thoughts on it....as for me, I'm gonna ponder on it some more as there was a lot to digest in this one...... thanks again April for putting in on Patreon for us all xxx ♥️
