So in the first Terminator movie, we learned that Skynet sent one machine back in time, and the human resistance sent one soldier back to stop him. In the second Terminator movie, we learned that no, Skynet actually sent two terminators back in time, and the resistance countered that by sending two protectors back. In the TV series, we learn that actually, Skynet sent multiple terminators back (different models, sent to different points in time, with similar but not exactly identical missions), and the resistance did pretty much the same thing.
