There's definitely different kinds of experiences you can have with these movies: Going in blind without knowing most of the references; or knowing the plot of the main movie it is parodying; or knowing most/all the movies and shows referenced in each movie. Scary Movie 1 is mainly parodying Scream 1 (with a little bit of Scream 2). Scary Movie 2 is mainly parodying The Haunting (the 1999 version). Scary Movie 3 is mainly parodying both Signs and The Ring. Scary Movie 4 is mainly parodying War of the Worlds (2005 version). The first 4 films attempt to reuse as much of the same cast as they can. Both characters of Cindy and Brenda are in 1-4. Unfortunately, 5 doesn't do this and I have no idea if 6 is a fresh new cast too.

They do a good job of keeping up with the times and following the current horror movies (and other pop culture fads) from when they were made, so if you want to see a few more little time capsules, I'd definitely recommend giving the rest of them a watch. It's lowkey so refreshing to see the old unhinged humor again, everything is so sanitized these days, so this was a 11/10 view.

I do like all the characters in the movie, but my favorite is Shorty, after whom we even name the family's dog. RIP Shorty. My favorite movie, which traumatized me as a child and still does lol, is The Grudge. I have to watch it when people are around me. I've never watched the original one, Ju-on: The Grudge. Other great recommendations coming from me would be such as The Ring, Mama, Jeepers Creepers, the first 2 films, The Strangers, the original one only, House of Wax, Veronica, As Above as Below, The Conjuring, Anabelle, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Witch, and The Fourth King.

There are a lot of classic horror films that I find to be good watches. The Alien and/or Predator films are fun. Have the Geks seen The Shining? That reminds me, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest is an incredible film, although it's not horror.

I think the one from this franchise that i remember most from my childhood and still quote today is scary movie 3 which parodies the ring, signs (my first scary movie i ever saw), 8 mile, the matrix.. jack mentioned the ring so maybe watch that movie and then watch scary movie 3 after.

I highly recommend you guys watch the Scream franchise for your spooky season reactions! the main movie this parodies is Scream (and some of Scream 2). I think Scream would be a good starting point for you guys because it's a super entertaining franchise (and not exactly that "scary" so it's a good introduction to the genre).

My Halloween/Horror GOATs are, The Thing (1982 version), Silence of the Lambs, and (since it’s one of the few decent horror movies from my country) Funny Games (the 1997 original, and the 2007 US remake are basically the same movie, from the same director).
