I'm not a fan of this Syrup Village arc. All the scenes felt so streched, the camera stays too long on the scenes/faces, it feels very flat most of the time and the creepy vibe didnt work for me at all. Dont get me even started on ep 4 :( :D I cringed a lot and in most reactions I skip these parts, I just cant with them. But yes, Usopp is a delight and alone from appearance Kuro is nice as well.

In the anime he kinda just goes from a lone wolf type character to a lighthearted and funny character while keeping some edgyness as soon as he meets luffy. I like the idea of stretching that transition a little further to make him feel more real.

But as I was watching this I found Zoro to be the weakest adapted character. If those were his lines I guess there's not much he can do with them (?), but I'm glad other people feel the same. That said, I do think the casting choices have been amazing, for example Mackenyu (Zoro's actor) is probably one of the only if not the only Japanese actor fluent in English + (relatively) muscular build.

They wanted the live action to feel more realistic but what's so realistic about a character who's got no emotions?. I don't agree that hes like this in the anime too, zoro has soo many sides to himself throughout the entire anime, usually he just doesn't care to chip in and hes only serious when it is a serious situation. I feel like the portrayal of zoro here is almost boring and zoro is never boring. Love machenyu tho, I jus hope they went back to the vision board for zoro in s2.

It's obviously a big ask to portray such an iconic character but the live-action show's version never really resonated with me. It's also pretty difficult to capture Luffy's expressions and mannerisms from the OG which is understandable, but that's a major part of what made him my favourite character in the first place.

I just scrolled through my old messages I sent to a friend while watching the anime and, direct quote, "I liked Nami a lot more in the live action" lol. I apparently thought that LA Nami was for sure more pessimistic, but also more realistic and less explosively angry. She seemed more capable. In retrospect, I think LA Nami is a realistic representation of someone who has been through what she's experienced. It's maybe not as fun, but I did really sympathize with her character more.

Zoro and Nami are both way too emotionally flat. Zoro at least has the most goated fight choreography of the show though. Nami grew on me by the finale and Arlong Park helps her a bit but I'd prefer more. Anime Nami hid her pain behind smiles, live action Nami hides it behind a wall of drying paint. Usopp is fantastic and I love every time he's on screen. I never disliked his anime version like some people did but he really has the charisma going in live action. I won't go into detail for spoilers but I quite enjoy Sanji as well. Coby is also perfect and the added time with him is one of my favorite aspects of the live action. The anime skipping straight to showing him after enies lobby felt like wasted potential. Garp so far is a little too serious but we are getting glimpses of a more goofy side.

Buggy, as well, i loved him in the live action. They took away all of Zoro's personality, like he is so silly, we literally saw him act like he's tarzan in skypiea, can't imagine this zoro doing that. She’s been sailing and stealing since she was eight, always from pirates or the rich, to save her village from Arlong. In that time she’s only had negative experiences, and as a woman she’s also had to deal with men trying to take advantage of her (said in the Anime/Manga). So keeping control and acting guarded isn’t ego, it’s survival. Her stealing a few fancy decor pieces from Kaya isn’t cruelty either. And just because we as viewers know Kaya is kind (and being poisoned by Kuro), doesn’t mean Nami has to trust that. Even Kuro himself seems nice at first. From Nami’s perspective, Kaya is just another rich person — and her life experience tells her most rich people are selfish or corrupt. She’s always been fair too, openly telling Luffy she wasn’t part of his crew and standing by her role as a thief. She’s not doing it for herself, but for her village. But strangers don’t need to know that. Her view of the rich might come across as prejudice, but that prejudice is a self-defense mechanism to keep her from getting hurt again. And let’s be honest, in the OP world, we’ve seen this over and over: Baratie, the auction house in Sabaody… most of the wealthy are terrible people. Besides Kaya (and maybe Vivi), how many good rich people have we even met? Do you think there are any kind Celestial Dragons out there? That’s why I think Nami’s actually really well written. She has no one to rely on, the Navy is corrupt too, so she’s always had to keep her guard up. But over time we see her start to loosen around Luffy and the crew. Just like Luffy helps Zoro chase his dream again, he helps Nami do the same, and slowly trust others. She pushes for her own agency, doesn’t want to be seen as weak, but also has to act tough to survive. That’s exactly what Kaya appreciates in their talk. Nami is the first person to actually see her that way. So yeah, if you don’t like LA Nami, you don’t like her. But I think it’s worth remembering she’s carrying all of this with her, and that’s why she acts the way she does. I also find it ironic that Usopp's intentions are written more clear in the LA, while Nami's are kept more vague.

Oda didn’t want this and constantly rejected the proposal but finally gave in after months of persistence.
