Shinso's quirk isn't just about being brainwashed, it's about the threat of being brainwashed. It creates paranoia and puts the opponent on edge. I'm a big fan of Shinso, excited to finally see him again! The appeal of / distaste for Mineta imo really depends on if you look at his antics in a Doylist or Watsonian perspective. Is he a gag character that you can ignore if you find him distasteful or enjoy because he's not real and no one is really hurt by his actions? Or is he a real person whose actions affect his fellow students, making the girls uncomfortable and implying that UA faculty thinks it's totally okay to let a serial sexual assaulter/harasser become a hero, or at least receive no punishment for his clearly unacceptable behavior? Personally I take the latter view, so I'm not a huge fan, he bothers me.

I feel like Koda is another Yamaguchi (from haikyuu) type character. A very realistic character, representative of where he is in life. Someone to add personality dynamics to the big group of kids. A 14 or 15 year old kid, just came from middle school, already put in many stressful situations but has dreams of being a hero despite it all. Koda is very different from deku. Deku has a strong vision of his goal and future and he’s chasing after it at rampant speed, like your typical main character. But I think Koda’s arc is more about getting over his weaknesses and insecurities and learning how he can contribute and be the hero he wants to be. And in that arc you’re gonna have to witness that weakness, it’s apart of his story.

I love season 5. This first arc is all Academia, which I have missed seeing. Watching how different students and quirks work or don't work together is a lot of fun for me. Remember when they become Pros they are going to have to work together, so seeing these matches is important to gauging how they would handle Hero Work. Strategy, teamwork, lateral thinking, time management, changing the odds to win, all things I'm glad MHA gives screen time to. Spectacle is fun and all, but it's hollow storytelling if there's no world-building or character development to back it up.

I feel like the teachers probably get overlooked when it comes to the Hero rankings since they aren't in the public eye as much. They don't have time to be out stopping villains and saving people. I don't know the specifics, but i'm sure there's a different stipulation for them when it comes to hero work. Also I don't judge people based on their appearance, I let their actions speak for them. In that regard, Koda kinds sucks dude. He looks terrible, he doesn't actually DO anything. Someone else said it already, but the broad scope of his quirk is pretty handy for hero work in general, especially search and rescue.

Re: Koda slander Sure, his power is relatively underwhelming in combat or 1:1 scenarios but his power is actually INSANE when considered across the full spectrum of what heroes need to do. He can perform as a scout and recon specialist in nearly any environment by communicating with the animals inhabiting it (something that would normally require a biome/environment specific quirk that might not exist to achieve), coordinate giant swarms of animals, and also communicate with animals in emergencies. Imagine your dog/pet is lost (or as is common, many pets are) in a natural disaster and they are scared/can’t find their way home? Having someone like Koda in that situation might make him seem as great or an even greater hero than All Might to someone (like me)! Also I’m really stoned so… 🤣

i never understand when reactors expect class B to be buns. they've been at UA the same length as Class A. they've definitely had different experiences but just as much growth when it comes to quirk knowledge and actual full-time training. If you're only obsessed with who's the best, you miss the chance of appreciating the other characters for who they are. I love this show because of how fleshed out the world and all the characters are, so well thought out, even Koda. it's just such a waste to hate, when you can enjoy it, you know? It's just so odd to start off with hate and dislike when you meet a new character instead of entering with an open mind. They were the same with Mirio and I had to laugh. The thought that a character has to earn your respect is comical to me, but in the end i guess everyone watches anime differently. But anyways, I really like this arc ; contrary to the general consensus. I feel like up until now, we only get small glimpses of the two classes interacting but i think it's fun to see everyone compete with their quirks. I went and looked at the episode list for szn 5, and I forgot how packed this season is with good arcs and episodes. I'm excited for like almost every drop lmao. looking forward to the rest of this season and the next
