Just for you guys to be aware. Having a bounty does not mean that you are actively declaring war on the government. Bounties are put on criminals based on their crimes and overall threat to the World Government, but almost all pirates/criminals would rather not go to an active war or directly go against the Government. That's what makes this moment so epic since the SHs actively chose to show them the middle finger and go to war against them.

On this rewatch, which is my first, I deeply loved the Hiluluk's backstory and how it connected so deeply with the show's themes, it became my favorite moment on this first half of the story and even though I absolutely unconditionally love these Robin episodes I thought it had been surpassed, but rewatching it now I don't think so, this is too good.

What I especially love about this moment and about Luffy's character is that he waits to hear Robin say she wants to live. It's not enough for him to impose that on her, he needs to hear her say it to fully commit and save her. It's such a meaningful and human encounter, much like when Luffy waited for Nami to say "help me" before actually intervening in Arlong Park. Luffy although willing to go any mile for any one of his friends, wants it to be their decision, and in that way offers such an immense respect and equality in their relationships that is just so rare to find in a character. People that think Luffy's character is simple couldn't be further from the truth (well the only people that would think that haven't watched the show haha) It's also so impactful to me that Ussop shot down the flag after Luffy told him to. In that moment, despite the past, the complicated rivalry and falling out, and more than anything despite Ussop's constant fear and wavering in front of danger, he doesn't Waver in declaring war on the most powerful threat they've ever been up against. It shows how deep the bonds are in this show, how meaningful the connections are. This is truly a scene that is unique to One Piece, and what I mean by that is the swirling mix of emotions that this scene brings forth in people, and how vividly real they feel is such a masterful display of writing and execution that so few shows can achieve it in this way. Even if they make you feel, it's rare they make you feel this much, and this authentically. I almost can't describe it, but I can think of hundreds of times Oda achieves it throughout the show. The greatest strength of One Piece to me, and what brings it to my number one show, will always be how Oda captures parts of the human experience so authentically and how One Piece makes you feel so much because of it. It's a nice thought to me that that's why so many people love this show especially and so many others. That it's through our deep senses of feeling and emotion, how these pieces of media mirror our human experiences that brings forth love for these things. It's a testament to what it means to be human.

These episodes are just so special to me. I've been waiting for this reaction since the 12 hour binge, and it did not disappoint. The found family themes in One Piece resonate with me, and I'll never forget the feeling I felt during the Straw Hat walk to Enies Lobby. 274-278 gave me a feeling of fulfillment and so much emotion that I had never felt before when watching anything else. After these episodes, I binged the rest of the show without looking back and caught up in 3 months to watch episode 1004 as it aired. Whenever I look back on my One Piece journey, these episodes are what made me realize that I was watching something special that I may never experience again, because there really is nothing else quite like One Piece. this is the first time I see everyone teary eyed on the couch, a legendary reaction for sure. imagine being called a devil, always being betrayed by others, and putting up with it cause you carry the legacy of the only people who have ever loved and cared about you in your life. you grow scared, lonely and thinking your existence is alarming to the world, but then 20 years later, you come across people who make you realize that survival isn’t enough, you actually want to live, and declaring a war to the entire world is a small price to pay compared to them no longer having you by their side. the way robin has been yearning for someone she could love without feeling guilt her entire life, and then here comes the straw hats, who love each other like it’s breathing, sealing their fates together by burning down a flag and letting her know that she no longer has to bear that burden on her own. this is one of the moments that made me realize one piece is one of my favorite pieces of media ever. the way i see sparks of real life through out the show, their depictions of humans, beauty, tragedy and love are so dear to me, and it’s honestly such a joy to see how it impacts others, thanks for giving op a chance!! Some all time PEAK, I can't describe how much I love this stretch of episodes. Like Carter said there are so many small pieces that come together that make this incredible moment, it's a masterful tapestry that's so incredibly constructed. It often gets lost in the hype but the shooting through the flag moment is as much message for Robin as it is for the navy/government. Her greatest fear is that she'll be abandoned because she'll be too much of burden with an unshakeable enemy like the government. Luffy responds to that by refusing to let her be alone by making them his enemy with a declaration of war. I have never been able to watch robins backstory without crying it's crazy 😭. I LOOVE what Carter said about how her backstory ties into the straw hats and who Luffy is a a person BC that is exactly that. I believe this arc solely exists for setting the tone for what One piece is really about and who Luffy is as a person. Luffy does not care who you are, what your past is or your goal, as long as you are a good person and that is why he is able to tell if people are good or bad right away bc that is all that matters to him. I also think it is so beautiful how Luffy is the definition of freedom to be who you and purse what you want bc that is how he lives his life, people might think hes crazy and impulsive but I think its so beautiful how he does whatever comes to mind. He is so selfish that it is inherently unselfish. That is why they all follow him despite how annoying he can be, because they know that no matter what Luffy will never let them down.

this is what cemented robin as my favorite strawhat (besides luffy ofc) but the entire crew honestly has my whole heart, more so than any other fictional characters. like i just love usopp’s zero hesitation to shoot down the flag and zoro’s silent oath to robin. one piece means sm to me, never has a show taken me to the absolute depths of despair and then brought me to the peak of joy so quickly. so many people miss out on this show and how amazing the writing is bc they think it has a “slow start,” but it perfectly establishes the premise and characters so moments like this hit so much harder, and then it subtly introduces new mysteries and drops lore that always ends up tying back into the story flawlessly. one piece really is the pinnacle of storytelling

I love how it connects to the usopp stuff aswell. The whole disagreement was that he felt luffy was giving up on the merry and it played into how he felt that luffy would give up on him aswell because he felt like he was a burden. Having the flashback of usopp telling robin it’s okay and that she should believe in luffy was masterful. Then having him be the one to shoot the flag to declare war on the world government, taking on the biggest burden possible, sort of proved no matter what it is luffy would never turn his back on any of them. It’s all too good 🔥🔥

"Shoot through the flag" reminds me of Drum Island where Luffy protected Hiriluk's flag from being destroyed because he knows very well the signifance of a flag. Him asking Usopp to burn the World Government's own flag shows he is very much aware of what it symbolizes. He is willing to take that enormous burden and fight the world for Robin. Usopp, our member who's always been afraid, burned that flag without hesitation. ❤️

I remember that moment when Zoro joined the crew and he said to Luffy that if he got in his way to accomplish his dream/ambition, he would have him killed but now he put his life and thus his dream on the line (and so did the rest of the strawhats) to save Robin and I think it shows his growth. The strawhats have one of the most beautiful bonds in fiction imo.

God, I love this show so much! I'm crying again no matter how many times I watch it. Robin's backstory is so impactful and relatable. That yearning to be part of something, to be acknowledged, to live without judgement and to finally find a place she can call home. I just love how she found all of that with Luffy and our crew. The bond they created is so precious.

Rewatching Robin cry out that she wanted to live after thinking she didn't deserved to live, really spoke into her character. For 20 years of her life, she thought she would only be betrayed, but finding the Strawhats, recognizing their characters and seeing how far they were willing to go, making the world their enemy. It showed her that they would and could save her, she put her life into their hands. And bro, this is why I love Luffy, he may be foolish and act silly, but this was just the moment that set everything into motion, into the crew and his character. They would go to hell and back for each other. This made me sob and then laugh at the boys for pretty much all being on the verge of crying. One Piece does that to you and I can't wait for another moment to happen.

I love the Strawhats so much, and Zoro doing "Kinchou" (the act of drawing the sword and striking the guard). During the Edo period, samurai used that to make firm promises. Zoro is making a promise to Robin that he will protect her with his life. The fact that he did it with Wado Ichimonji, the sword Zoro holds dearest to him - PEAK.

Holy F BRO I forgot just how emotional Robin's "I want to live!" really is, I've loved that scene for ages but watching it again with the full context of everything still fresh in my mind like all of Water 7 and her backstory and like Luffy's tenacity in not letting her leave until he hears a valid reason (which is such a good parallel between his acceptance of Usopp's very sound reasoning for leaving), it all just made it hit so damn hard again. God I haven't been in tears like that since Acrobatic Silky's backstory in Dandadan.

There's so much I want to say!! Carter's face looked like he went through a laundry drying cycle by the end of the reaction and that's how I felt too because I spent the whole time tearing up. I loved the post-ep discussion because I could tell you guys were trying to talk about how much you loved everything while also needing time to process, and I think that's why you need time, because to a lot of people there is a clear difference between how they felt about OP before "I want to live" and after. It's a kind of love for this series that survives the worst pacing and ugliest characters, and has you checking up on the series for the next 15 years of your life. Robin's backstory will always be my favourite in One Piece because the tragedy ties back to this pitch-perfect moment of hope, courage and friendship (as you guys said). The way that she sees Luffy at the end is what makes him my ultimate GOAT. It's like, we just spent four episodes feeling how the world crushed her every belief and hope, and in the end, Luffy is still stronger and brighter than that. Because of who he is, she is able to believe in the Strawhats more than she fears the world. "I want to live" is pure catharsis, and in the real world, I feel like Luffy could be a stand-in for anything. It's that moment you've been depressed for three months and one day you wake up and can start doing more. Or when something's been beating your ass so bad and you finally get sick enough to do something about it. Or you get a cat, or have a great day with your friend, or you really are suicidal and then you aren't. Regardless of what the specifics are, I feel like almost anybody will experience catharsis in that scene with Robin - that switch from when things feel like they don't matter to when they do; and you start seeing in color again, and want to embrace the good things that could be in your life. Sorry for the big cheese of this comment lol. I've really enjoyed one piece week, thanks geks as always and hope you all have a great day!

Aaaaand this brings me back to episode 250 (32:46 from the Geks' upload of 249-254), to what Kokoro said after Tom had been killed; "If it's the World Government we're up against, there's nothing we can do! Bear it. Tom-san saved you two." Now we have Luffy, who fearlessly says "Bring it on!!" after basically declaring war on the World Government. One of the great moments of one piece, all the turmoil the crew has been through recently with Merry and the inner conflict just comes to a standstill and without words the crew unanimously decides to go against the world to protect one of their own. Luffy may be goofy and childish sometimes but his loyalty to his friends is unmatched, even willing to give up on his own dream to save one of them.

shooting down the flag is also luffy carrying the same burden and darkness that haunts robin, it's like he's proving to her they wont betray her since now they're on the same boat. also i love how none of the strawhats, not even the scardy-cat trio (nami, chopper and usopp) objected when usually they want anything but to be targeted by powerful enemies. i love the straw hats so much and luffy especially for making it possible for the crew to feel safe around each other

In regards to wanted vs declaring war against the government. Most pirates just seek riches, power, adventure and such, they do not seek to confront the navy or the government. Declaring war on the other hand, essentially makes you a terrorist, a rebel, someone who is actively targeting the government. That naturally makes the government view them as something dangerous to eradicate. PS. I love the Robin backstory, but I hate the scholars and their selfishness which doomed so many innocent people.

So Pirates are pretty much just anyone who's out at sea and not following the laws. Being a Pirate doesnt necessarily mean you're directly fighting the World Government. What the Strawhats did was outright declare WAR against the World Government. Before, they were just a Pirate group on a ship going on an adventure and sometimes they'd have to fight or run from Marines, but now they're saying "Hey, you're our fucking enemy now. If we see you it's on sight. We won't back down, we're about that shit. We want all the smoke. If you attack us, you better pray that you kill us."

My favourite part about the flag being burnt, is that luffy solved in an instant the main problem holding Robin back by making himself a bigger target through declaring war on the war government. So subtle, so badass

It might still be my favourite moment too. and IMO is the most iconic and remembered line from the whole series

Robins voice acting was top tier. “I WANT TO LIVE, TAKE ME TO SEA WITH YOU” felt so real it really convinced me how hard she broke it was pure peak voice acting to match the peak writing
