I found that watching the anime when only the first season was out & THEN going to the manga, made aspects of the anime click much better because of how much more background/story is explained in the manga :).

There were a lot of things censored, not only obvious scenes like the one with Nishio in this episode, but things like knives were censored, they used blurry, obscure a scene, contrast colors or directly just a flash of white/black light across the whole scene and sometimes you couldn't even see what was happening, that definitely didn't help with its popularity

As someone who watched the anime only I feel like reading the manga just now with you guys made my experience better as its made it easier to understand the manga while also expanding on the anime in information and world building. whereas in current order, reading the manga and then watching the anime makes you get a feeling of missing out on a lot of stuff that you know happened in the manga and isn't shown, which hinders your experience of the anime. all in all, I think it'll make your entire Tokyo Ghoul experience much more pleasent.

Mangas are most of the time more detailed than animes for obvious reasons, and looots of mangakas put so much effort in their drawings. I know One Punch Man is a very good example (however for this one it's not the author himself who draws it, but an illustrator), they'd lose it if they saw some of the drawings.

I haven't read JJK fully but I genuinely think that anime adaptation if Shibuya arc was one of the best I've evere seen. I was so scared that it wouldn't live up to the expectations but as whole season 2 of JJK did a PERFECT job of conveying the vibes of the arc. The Mahogara vs Sukuna fight was a blur when I read manga and anime adaptation did what it was supposed to do with it's bright visuals. Generally, MAPPA are known for staying really faithful to the source material which I appreciate. I'd also like to add that the time between reading the manga and watching the anime adaptation matters too. Since you guys are doing everything back to back immediately you notice tyhe smallest differences quicker and feel the contrast ofshift in one. But in reality many people take some time between reading and watching the anime. On one hand the bigger that time is the less you're likely to remmeber small details but at the same time the long wait for anime adaptation may build too much hype and expectations. It's an interesting dynamic. When it comes to the other shows you've watched, while not bad at all, I've heard that Naruto's manga is way better than anime adaptation solely for the lack of fillers and a better Sakura writing. I think Carter would enjoy Naruto more if he were to read manga one day, since it's the most consise version of the show. No long flashbacks, etc. Haikyuu's adaptation is pretty good but with the movie it is already know to leave out some important details out. Though, I have to admit as a once Haikyuu manga reader I barely understood the match progression. If you think fights are difficult to understand, then you've never read a Haikyuu match ;) Death not and FMAB, from what I know, are pretty good adaptations that didn't leave much out and just enhanced the already existing shows. Code Geass of course didn't have any source material. Now that you guys are reading the manga, you probably understand more why it's such a crazy thing to create an anime from scratch and reach high levels of quality. P.S. I'm curious what you guys would think about AOT's manga because it DOES have some details (like the conversation between Historia and Levi abouther becoming the Queen) in manga compared to anime adaptation. Maybe now you would be more interested in the videos that compare anime and manga. You should probably watch one for AOT if you don't want to read the manga fully)))

Think about 99% of the fandom, basically everyone experienced Tokyo ghoul thru its anime first and then switched to the manga (if they even bothered to read). I think it would be a nice change of pace for them to read it first and then see how the anime adapted it.

Towards the end the paneling and action is much clearer than towards the beginning. I think it's bc it's his first manga like that that hes still got a lot of flaws when it comes to action

Season 1 isn’t too bad but basically everything after is a little problematic lol, it makes more sense to read the manga then treat the anime as a separate experience if you’re still interested in my opinion, especially after season 1

And in general a lot of the details, nuance and arcs were skipped entirely. By the time it tried to follow the manga again in season 3, none of the narrative was cohesive anymore. It's definitely a strange adaption

Seeing more inner dialogue and stuff is cool. Anime is dope. Getting music, voices, and everything else that brings it to life is great. It also helps with some of that confusion, especially during action sequences Totally understandable why people tend to be partial to whatever they consume first. Things get complicated when an adaptation diverts from the source material. But it’s cool to see you guys experience/appreciate all the differences in such a direct way.

Tokyo Ghoul was the first anime I finished, then read the manga then bought both box sets (Tokyo Ghoul and re) have never re-watched the anime since but have re-read the manga multiple times, I think I’m mostly interested in the GEK boys reactions about the differences. But I saw the notif for this episode and have not been more excited about anything in the last few years, so I can’t wait for the next one

So we all know for a fact that the Geks love The Last of Us series, right? A question to the viewers: How much would they love the show if they played the game first then watched the series? Seems like most of the people who played first had sooo much problem with the show AND the cast. On the other hand, the Geks, who watched the show first, didnt have much of a problem with Ellie. Instead, they like her which is far from hating her because she's not the right actress for ellie. When they play The Last of Us in the future, they will have an unforgettable time with the game in addition to having a blast watching the show and rooting for joel and ellie in the show. That's the kind of experience I want them to have with Tokyo Ghoul. To love both the anime and the manga, rather than loving one and hating the other, like what happened with people who played The Last of Us then watched the series. At the end of the day, what the Geks want is to have an amazing experience. And i know for a fact that they will have exactly that when they play The Last of Us because they watched it first than the other way around.

But an elite manga is always better than a mid or even a good anime. Like shibuya was fantastic in the manga but the anime elevated it in every single possible way.

2025-06-12 21:42:45 +0000 UTCI noticed you guys struggle with some of the Japanese names, like "Fueguchi", and I don't know if you guys will read this, but in case anybody else wants to know how to pronounce Japanese words/names, I'll try to briefly explain. Just always remember these vowels for pronunciation: "A-I-U-E-O" Funnily, Japan has these vowels but they're kind of like the building blocks of the whole language. The only difference is the order (in US, the order being: "A-E-I-O-U"), and obviously, their pronunciation. This isn't the perfect way to pronounce, but it's the easiest way to teach. And it sounds close enough. A -> あ -> 'Ah' sound I -> い -> 'Ee' sound U -> う -> 'Oo' sound E -> え -> 'Eh' sound O -> お -> 'Oh' sound I could go through and list the whole hiragana/katakana, but that'd be too long lol. Now, in front of the AIUEO kanas, these are all of the possible characters: - easy ones-> k, s, t, n, h, m, y, r :: special ones -> shi, tsu, chi, fu, wa, wo, n - (e.g. 'ka', 'sa', 'ta', 'ha', 'ma', 'ya', 'ra') *If this is confusing, you can literally look-up "hiragana chart" and it'll make more sense. Going back now, the name "Fueguchi" can be separated to "Fu-e-gu-chi" (foo-eh-goo-chee) vs. "Fue-guchi" (foo-goo-chee). "Touka" would be "toh-kah". The 'u' in 'ou' you see is just an extended 'oh' sound; if you ever see 'ei', it's just extended "eh" sound. Sorry for the long explanation 🙏 but I hope this helps somebody (if it even makes sense)

2025-06-12 20:36:28 +0000 UTCCarter, there are mangakas that play with the panels and use them for story telling, but I wouldn't say is a norm in every manga but is also not uncommon. Sui Ishida tho, he does it in an amazing way, you guys really pick one of the best mangas to start with. One thing that I don't like about the anime is that it doesn't have any of the internal conflict the characters (rn Kaneki) goes through. That aspect is really important to the story but in the anime is just gone and I know anime prefers "show don't tell" but erasing parts of the story for the sake of it is also not good in my opinion. Even with all that I still think S1 is an ok adaptation, the music and voice acting elevate it for me, but I still prefer the manga even for these 2 episodes.

2025-06-12 19:55:26 +0000 UTCplease dont watch it first. it will destroy the whole story. the internal struggles, the emotions and the thought-process are the things that really are missing in the anime, which the manga portrays so beautifully. the anime just feels hollow at some point (first season tried their best but after that season, there wont be any depth to the characters because they decided to leave almost anything character related out and just did fight after fight without really connecting the plotpoints.) Watching it first will ruin the first impression and you guys dont want that. i think the "raw" material is just the way to go. And after that the only thing you are looking foward to are the fights

Also another thing to note is that season 2 is actually a alternate timeline different to the manga that the author wanted for the anime. It was a cool idea at first but many manga readers didn't really like the changes. Plus the later seasons after season 2 follow the manga version of season 2 which just makes it very confusing for anime watchers as alot of the plot is entirely skipped or just randomly tweaked. Also not to mention the anime after season 2 was heavily rushed in terms of direction and animation.

Sometimes they were easy to follow but the majority of them you had to look at for like 2 minutes just to understand what was happening. It’s weird cause the art is so godly at times but he never could get the fight scenes down.

And yes this comes from someone who has TG as their top 1 series. Ishida was really bad at it, since it was his first ever serialized work, and to be completely honest, it wont get any better until at least his next serialized work a.k.a Choujin X LMAO. Also yeah. Ishidas TG paneling game is honestly on another level. One of the bests. There are so many pages that are wallpaper material. Overall i really enjoyed all seasons and liked the characters/ story so much that i binged the manga as well and yes the manga was a lot better than some episodes but it didn’t take anything from enjoying the anime enough to be rewatching it.
