2025-06-12 06:24:20 +0000 UTCI think at some point it became a trend to hate on MHA and Deku because it was so insanely popular when it was coming out. It still is insanely popular but like compared to most other anime MHA hit new heights in places outside of Japan. It became by far the biggest anime in America. Its also because of part of the fanbase that people hate (I kind of agree). This part of the fanbase loves Deku and always ships him with Bakugo and Todoroki just for the sake of having them be gay. I got nothing wrong with people being gay but when you force it onto everyone else and constantly make out everything about MHA to be about your gay ships with Deku you ruin the entire reputation of the series. Everyone knows that the author clearly set up Deku to get with Uraraka. People dunk on Deku just for the sake of doing it because the people who are part of that specific fanbase (majority of MHA fans are normal and cool but this is a very very loud minority) make Deku so part of what they do with making gay ships and making him be a borderline "twink" even though Deku is masculine AS FUCK ( I mean honestly you see so many moments of peak masculinity but you want to make him out to be a twink). Its so annoying especially to me because Deku is my favorite character in the series alongside All Might. I also should mention this part of the fanbase that ruined MHA's reputation with all of their stupid shit also threatened the life of the author of the series itself for not making Deku be gay. I also think they pushed Horikoshi into making certain decisions because of how often he would get threatened and abused on the internet with them trying to tell the author (Horikoshi is the author) what to do with his own fucking story. I mean WTF??? I literally followed this series from start to finish and had to see all of this shit play out.

I think the school girls quirk must have something to do with blood. I think she mentioned during her meeting with the blue haired guy that she can become someone? So maybe that's her quirk? She uses their blood to become someone temporarily? And maybe even be able to use their power? I don't think Bakugo will become a villain. He may have certain aspects of a villain at times, but I don't see him going to the dark side. I'm excited for the next set of episodes.

The bar is low for a good dub anime because most are so bad, but there’s a few peak ones, or ones that ppl prefer for nostalgic reasons (dbz, fairytail, soul eater (PEAK)). So mha dub is pretty good considering, but I prefer the sub VAs portrayal of the characters better. To name a few examples, Deku can be a meek kid at times but his Sub VA is so good at portraying all of his strength and confidence in the right moments. Similarly, Bakugo’s Sub VA does an amazing job of portraying those hints of vulnerability and quiet insecurity in his voice that I don’t think the dub does right. Bakugo’s voice is more dynamic in sub, while he just remains one note (screaming) in dub. I do like mineta’s dub VA though cause it matches how slimey he is as a person, that little shit

Todoroki and bakugo are far more interesting characters. Which for me personally I wish they were the main characters instead of Deku. It would have made the story far more interesting

MHA just got real VAs for the dub and the translation isn't garbage like many are. I definitely prefer dub in seasons 1-3. Allmight's va is epic. Deku's va is good, nothing like Eren's va in AOT 🤮

He is a GREAT guy, very hard working and with strong ideals, etc. My first reason is my disconnection from his past and motivation. He didn’t have a tragic childhood unlike some protagonists similar to him (and no, the lack of quirk doesn’t hit as much as growing up without parents or witnessing death lmao). The whole “becoming hero” motivation also never hit me hard. Like it’s not a bad motivation not all, but you can’t call it deep. It also doesn’t steam from personal trauma or hurt, like for example Naruto’s motivation does. There is nothing grand behind that motivation other than helping people which is ABSOLUTELY OKAY, but def not compelling enough for me. And the second reason, is his way of obtaining powers. I never liked the way he got his powers. Though it’s fun to see how he works around it, for me it just feels cheap. The show establishes such a huge part pf him and then promptly throws it away by giving him the strongest quirk. I may have been even more interested if he actually never got a quirk lmao. Like genuinely, it would be so interesting to see him becoming a hero in spite of being quirkless. In the end, I’d like to say despite all my dislike I LOVE the way geks are loving the show and loving Deku. My girl was bleeding from the head, probably has a concussion, and barely remembers what happened to her after the Nomu attacked her and Awase (the boy from Class 1B who was with her, he's goated too for trying to shield her with his own body when he thought they were gonna die, he could have abandoned her if he had a smaller sense of duty and responsibility!) In any case, Momo was so out of it that a normal person would probably have been unable to think beyond needing to pass out, but she managed to come up with a plan that might help the heroes' side once this disaster is over. Her decision fully reflects how much she's changed since the UA sports festival. Aizawa was talking about how since then, she had lost all confidence in herself and her capabilities, and often compared herself with Todoroki, who seems to hesitate a lot less. However, she turned that around in the Final Exams in S2, and now we see her making spur-of-the-moment decisions while under pressure with no problem at all! This was smth she struggled with in her fight against Tokoyami in the sports festival tournament, so seeing her confidently and assuredly making up her mind in such a stressful and dangerous situation really shows how much she's grown as a hero. I'm honestly so proud of her for that!

But what I don’t get at all is hate for him as a person. His morals are perfect, like you said (which could be a reason to hate him for bad character writing or something) and he’s hardworking, humble and intelligent on top of that. People who say he didn’t earn his power but say everyone else did are ridiculous considering everyone else was already born with them. People who hate him for crying when he’s a 15 year old who was bullied his whole life want even less character depth. His emotions are what make him feel real to me. They are what sets him apart from some other shonen protagonists, who don’t show such a wide emotional range. And then there are those who say ‘wHy DiDNt DekU JuST TrAIn” before meeting All Might while I bet they didn’t become body builders by the age of 14 while being distracted by bullies belittling your every move. Also, he says in the second episode that he didn’t really believe he could actually become a hero and was just lying to himself, desperately trying to prove himself wrong. So yeah there is absolutely no reason to hate Deku for his personality within the show. That’s just toxic masculinity directed at a literal kid. If you hate him for how he is written, that’s a different story.

MHA had a pretty good public reception and reputation overall at the point you guys are currently on. The dub is definitely not the reason, as much as I am not a fan of it.

I even like Spinner even though i dislike his name (Degrassi reasons) I love how he sticks to his ideals, he's just like Deku in some ways but about Stained instead of All Might. Even Mr. Compress is so interesting as a character. He's always reminded me of Turnip Head from Howl's Moving Castle. Even Shigaraki is interesting, like what's with the hands. Side Note i'm making my comments as spoiler free and i'm also not doing that whole "oh man wait till you find out" think cause i find it annoying, i'm commenting the way I felt and reacted the first time I saw it.

2025-06-10 06:38:00 +0000 UTCI'm a strong sub advocate for many reasons but MHA is the one anime where I genuinely think the dub is really well done. It's not about the acting skills — it's because dub voices often don’t match the characters’ vibes, so the characters feel less alive. But for MHA, the voices fit pretty good, and the script adaptation is done pretty well. Some lines even hit harder in dub than in sub, at least for me. (and is funnier) Also, MHA has a lot of American-inspired themes, so the English lines don’t feel awkward or cringy. Compare that to something like Demon Slayer — its world is deeply rooted in Japanese culture and their skill names rely on traditional japanese characters which sounds lengthy and not that deep in English. (Even the title, "oni" being translated to "demon" technically makes sense, but it feels different.) If there's anyone who's hesitating to watch MHA in dub, i would say go for it. It will grow on you.

Dubs before the early 2010s weren't as good, but there are still quite a few that hold a special place in people's hearts (Evangelion, FLCL, Cowboy Bebop, One Piece, Pokemon, and at least a few others). Edit: To clarify, I'm referring to when people talk about subs vs dubs in anime in general, not when they're talking about a specific show. So, at least with more modern dubs, you'll rarely ever come across a dub that isn't at least only slightly worse than the sub. In fact, there are many dubs (MHA included, IMO) that may even be as good as or surpass the sub, plus ultra style!

No hate to anyone who is passionate about what the enjoy - i'll be the last person to do that. Also, if you think back to when you guys were anime haters... MHA on a surface level was low key the embodiment of everything you hated about it lol and that will often draw people away from even starting it and getting to the good stuff. I tried to get my friends to start it but they refused for that reason. As for the dub, I actually think Deku's dub VA fits him perfectly and don't think it's cringe. But this is coming from someone who has been known to enjoy a dub haha.

I was sad to see it left out when I rewatched in the sub. Granted his line delivery in the sub is better than the dub, so to me it sort of exemplifies the argument of sub vs dub in this show. Do I prefer better line delivery, or moments like that? But that's just one example, I'm sure there are others.

When Awase and Momo are about to be killed by the nomu, in the sub, Awase just repeats "What are those? What is that?", which is totally fine, but in the dub, he says "Whats are those? Oh no, oh god, I'm so sorry!"

There's so many aspects of the dub that are on par with the sub and even some slightly better, as someone who watched a majority of the anime dubbed and finished season 6 and 7 subbed.

Obviously his overall attitude is like the perfect form of a hero, but I think he does have out of combat instances where he's kinda annoying. I like him, don't get me wrong, but it shows that no matter what, no one is perfect. The GOAT Chris Sabat (Picollo, Vegeta, Strong Arm Armstrong from Fullmetal, Roronoa Zoro, Snake in Vinland Saga) is the voice for All Might in the English dub. I like it, but the sub is pretty good too. Guess it just depends on your preferences. Also, what a diabolical way to end this episode, Carter hahaha. McKay with the volcano shout. He's out of line, but he's right.

In fact, I think you should watch the Todoroki vs Deku fight from season 2 and the Deku vs Muscular fight episode in Dub and I highly doubt you will think he is a problem. Overall, the MHA dub is very high quality and doesnt deserve that slander

It was THEEE anime for a while id say more so than even solo leveling mostly because there wasn't nearly as many goated high quality modern action anime as there are now as competition (we really have been blessed with peak for the past couple of years) and at the time I think it was sorta seen as a normie anime with just bright colors, action and a protag that just cries and isnt that interesting, that on top of the sorta cringe fanbase of young teens made the whole show get a cringe rep. Which then gave birth to a sorta anime elitist view of mha which like Cannon was saying at the end where people kinda judge you if you like it but they probably haven't even watched it themselves. You can see it with the cringe lords writing paragraphs crying about how could such a high quality anime like steins gate be losing too such a boring generic shonen slop show in the last polls comments lol. You can't take those people seriously the people who actually have seen all the seasons know its a great show even if season 5 has some questionable adaptation changes from the manga everything else is still quality and the latest season was my favorite so far so don't worry about the haters there's still much peak left.

Lots of VAs in the West are hired off FIverr. That being said, I don't see how after watching hundreds of animes, even without knowing Japanese, you can't tell bad from good VA work. Will still only watch in sub though as English is not my first language so I have no reason not to watch in the original. Deku's dub VA is not bad at all but I prefer the sub. It's just that people have used out of context dub clips of Deku when slandering him as they obviously are trying to reach a wider audience with their hate since rage bait engagement pays nowadays (thanks Musk). Imagine posting a clip of Deku saying "Kacchan" with a concerned voice and then switching to a clip of him crying all with clown music and a caption like 'Bro can not be your GOAT fr 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭'. It's so easy to edit it to suit one's agenda. That's why insecure 14 y.o on the internet will never claim him as their favourite since in internet arguments people can use Deku's crying against him and apparently that's not 'aura points'. Anyway, a dub vs sub comparison like you guys did with AoT is very very needed at the end of your watch just to form your own opinion. The dub is peak, only problem is that Deku's eng dub has memed to hell since all the people who make fun of him for crying can't speak Japanese so they have to resort to copying Deku's English voice to slander him. MHA's English dub has constantly been praised to the point where Twitter posts of clips of the Eng VA's on Twitter get over hundred thousand likes of people praising them. For gosh sakes I posted a twitter clip of Deku's English dub VA from S7 and I got over 70k likes of people glazing him
