The first season of the anime is fine but after that it gets totally derailed from the manga. They skip arcs and make even make up their own content and it's genuinely confusing if you don't read it beforehand. I encourage everyone to read the manga first! Thank you for reading the original. It seems so simple at first but actually gets so deep and crazy as you progress, kind of like AoT. Peak story telling.

This anime never really stood out to me before because of the human eating thing being a bit of an ick for me, but I was curious when I saw you guys were doing it in tandem with the manga. I'm willing to give it more of a shot because it does seem interesting. They really do cut down when it comes to the anime. And yeah, about 2-3 chapters can usually be one episode. It really depends on how many filler chapters are in it too. Also, this isn't that important but there was a post credit scene where we get a little info on the guy who got his head kicked off in the alley if you guys wanted to go back and see it.

I joined y'all's patreon just so I can see y'all react to Tokyo ghoul fully and I'll say the story is absolutely amazing the manga is my all time favorite and while the anime in my opinion isn't as good as the manga it's still a very good story there was just a lot of unfortunate accidents in a sense that made it difficult to adapt it which is why I feel it doesn't hold up as well as the manga and why fans don't like it as much but I'm super excited to watch y'all react to one of my all time favorite stories

the anime did a good job with action scenes and music (ss1 theme song - Unravel, is still my favorite anime sound track to this day). The first few eps seem good but the importance of the manga writing will come into play the further you get down the story like Jack said. Tokyo Ghoul manga excels in world building, psychological horror and development of the characters, especially Kaneki. Already in this 1st ep they cut out a lot of Kaneki monologue, thoughts, and literary references which meant play a big part in the future. Like Sen Takatsuki was mentioned a bunch in the manga, yet the anime only showed a glimpse of the book and mentioned the signing event in one brief scene. The author is well-versed in literature and Kaneki himself loves reading so much that it's one of the core characteristics that defines him, yet the studio cut all of that out. It's little details they cut out that reduce Tokyo Ghoul from a psychologically heavy manga into an action anime that gets gory for no reason. Like imagine you cut out all of Light's thoughts and planning and just show him going into a killing spree in Death Note. The anime is not that bad (only ss1, it gets worse) but it pissed me off so much with how they disrespect the original author. Is it even an adaptation at this point when the first ep is already starkly different from the original story?

I just realized this but when you skip the opening for season 1 PLEASE DONT LOOK AT THE SCREEN until you hear the opening is 100% finished. I know when you skip the intros on specific streaming platforms that it doesn't fully skip the intro but it jumps you ahead to the last 2-3 seconds. Those last 2-3 seconds are a huge spoiler.

At first, you can just tell that the anime and the manga are different — not necessarily that one is better than the other. But as the story progresses, I think you'll start to understand why many people who watched the anime and read the full manga often say the manga is better. It's cool that you noticed the difference even in the first episode. In the manga, Kaneki goes to the coffee shop first, where he meets the old man who gives him meat. Then, he goes out to buy coffee and meets Nishiki. Touka already knows at that point that he has Rize's organs, so when she saves him, she knows who he is. But in the anime, the events happen in a different order — Touka saves Kaneki without knowing anything about him and only finds out later that he's the one with Rize's organs. Also, the anime is more focused on the action and spectacle, so it changes certain elements — for example, Kaneki’s murderous urges are less unstable and disturbing compared to the manga. The anime also puts less emphasis on Kaneki’s literary side. In the manga, both Kaneki and Rize often reference books, and Rize even talks about her favorite novel before trying to kill him. These literary parallels between what Kaneki reads and what happens to him are almost absent in the anime

In terms of pacing anime typically adapts 2-3 chapters per episode. However the first chapter of any new manga is always gonna be extra long because the author has to make a good impression and introduce their story to the world. For Tokyo ghoul, season 1 adapts the first 66 chapters in 12 episodes making it 5.5 chapters an episode. Def fast paced and a decent chunk cut out but still a good adaptation. Season 2 is 70 percent filler. Seasons 3-4 then adapt 179 chapters into 24 episodes at 7.5 chapters per episode! LOL! So u can kinda imagine why fans became upset but it will be nice for yall to see for yourselves.

1:16:35 Usually the first chapter or two of a manga is extremely long. You have to hook readers with your first chapter so it's fine to have a long chapter as their debut chapter. For example, My Hero Academia's first chapter is episodes 1 and 2. Wild. Usually a volume covers around 3-4 episodes

OG Berserk anime is fantastic and yall will guarantee love it, don't let anyone convince you otherwise. It's the 2016 adaptation that's dog shit unfortunately. The og anime ends at a good point though for it to be self contained. The remake movies end at a better spot though, which aren't bad either. Definitely watch the anime along with the manga too for the good parts that have been adapted!

Interesting idea, I can't wait to see how these comparison videos do. Tokyo Ghoul is a good choice to start with. What I know about the manga to anime comparison about Tokyo Ghoul is that the first season is the most well adapted of the seasons. Season 2 strays away from the manga for the most part. Season 3 is adapted okay, just a tiny bit rushed... but Season 4 is a rushed and skipped mess 💀 I hope you guys start with Berserk next. Maybe watch the movies too. Theres a lot of differences and omitions from what has been adapted. There's one arc that animation studios dont want to touch and that's The Lost Children Arc. Its one of the best but controversial arcs.

Very fun watch, I think the anime before manga will give more shock/ mystery since less is described? And they make it pretty quick paced. Then manga after you get a lot more context. I havent read the manga so I am not sure how many differences there are but this is a pretty fun way to do a series. Reading first you get all the context so the show will just be less shocking I guess? Either way - super fun!

Tokyo Ghoul is GOATED. The problem is that the anime was made in such a terrible fashion. Season 1 is good. I would even suggest you guys watch at least the entire first season of this show no matter what but it would be best to read the manga as well like you are currently doing but after season 1 you will notice things go completely out of whack in the anime. Its one of the biggest disappointments of anime adaptations of all time. People want a remake that is made properly sooooooo bad. This is a great series but it got done shitty with its anime.

I can't even word how much I loved this vid, the popcorn reading brought back memories of school, made me a bit nostalgic lol. I've watched all of the Tokyo Ghoul anime and as a non manga reader even I had my problems with the later seasons, season 1 was pretty good though and as the new anime watcher I was back then I didn't really pick up on the problems with S2 but now I can definitely see why people have problems with it. Oh but the one thing the anime did nail was that god damn opening, probably my favourite anime opening of all time, just such a genuinely good song with great lyrics. But yeah this was great, I'd love to see you's continue reading Tokyo Ghoul even if you's don't react to the corresponding episodes afterwards, I just absolutely loved the popcorn reading lmao, It'd also be great just being able to read the manga along with you's since I've heard how good it is compared to the anime but I'm not much a fan of reading on my own. OH also the little slice of life at the beginning was great, I'd love more stuff like that.

I like this idea, but I feel like you guys don't need to read the dialogue out loud, especially since you jump from one person to the next without stating who is speaking during those dialogue, kinda got confusing Imo. I think if you guys all read in your head and then discussed your thoughts more on what is being said or what is being shown in the pages scenes, would allow us to read and catch up with you, while still hearing your guys opinions/reactions on what is going on. Just my thought.

Its a whole new experience, I personally read manga majority of the time and tune into anime for fights now that its way more convenient to read when out somewhere, like waiting in a line, in between classes at school or on a bus/ car ride. This concept is very fun because you get the best of both worlds and i think you guys did a great job at reading the story. Kanekis thoughts are way more fleshed out in the manga so it seems more real and you have a deeper connection to the main cast.

I LOVE this new idea and I love how the other day I mentioned a TG character in one of the MHA posts and today we get a TG post. This way you can experience Tokyo Ghoul in its best form. TG is my top 1 manga for years and I know that wont change for a long time. I really wanted to see you guys react to it but the anime was just not it. Im glad now you guys can witness its greatness. Even though anime adaptation had pretty creative direction, aside from the fact that it cut, rearranged and changed a lot later on in the story, I HATE that they skipped Kanekis narration/thoughts. They are VERY important in the manga, as it helps you navigate and understand his psychology and change throughout the whole series. The fact that they cut out "If I were to write a book with me as the main character, it would be a tragedy." hurts me A LOT because this is so important (iykyk). Just anything that goes on with Kanekis thoughts are very crucial to his character, from the books he talks about, to just random things he mentions. Heck, even the chapter names are insanely important (again, iykyk). My bad for the rambling, its cuz whenever I see TG anime, Im just incredibly mad of how it was butchered LMAO. Sui Ishida and Tokyo Ghoul deserves better. Hopefully we will see TG remake one day.

I wish soooo badly that CSM had a 24 ep first season, it would have popped off so much better with that :( Part 1 was genuinely one of the most incredible stories I’ve ever read. After chapter 97 I put it down for a year because I was so shocked by the ending. Only just picked it up again to read Part 2 this month because I finally felt emotionally ready lol. I watched all of the show and I'll say the most important aspect that can't be adapted is character motives (internal dialogue) and the gritty art style of the manga, it just wasn't portrayed at all in the anime. The opening is one of the best if not the best (song wise) in all anime tho.

I’ve only watched season 1 of this anime and I’ve heard the manga is incredible but the show never sold me into reading it ngl, it was like it lacked substance for me to get attached to it, but I’m surprised with how different the dialogue is in the manga in comparison to the anime, the reference to Kafka and the other novel that was mentioned there piqued my interest, I can’t wait for the next drop!! this is gonna be so much fun<3 (also, I know the opening song WORD FOR WORD so I can’t wait for yall to react to it😭 lmao) reading manga and then watch how it gets translated to a different form of media makes you appreciate the authors and the directors of the show so much more imo, you’re about to enter such a fun world! we need more gek slice of life too!! and hopefully a vagabond reading session in the future🧎

I actually watched Tokyo Ghoul in 2015 after seeing the Unravel opening on YouTube. The opening was too goated - both artistic style and music. Can’t wait for the OP reaction. Please! Another! I really enjoyed you guys reading and watching the episode. Personally, I started with the anime. I LOVED season 1 and I think it's better than season 2, but I still enjoyed season 2. I got confused by the time I got to season 3 though, because the plot felt weird and disconnected, which is when I found out that season 2 of the anime was completely different from the manga adaptation. So I stopped watching to understand the manga and the manga was so amazing, I couldn't finish season 3 because I was so disappointed with what they did with the anime. I've been hoping they'll make a proper remake ever since. Now I 'm very curious to know how you'll receive it. Please, keep em coming. You guys are making me want to read it for the third time.

I don't know if anyone said it but I'll just put it here just in case. So the first season pretty much follows the manga with some changes that are worse in my opinion. The second season is a complete filler all the way through. The third season is where they continue the story from the manga if the second season was following the manga.

After only 4 hours of sleep because I don't have self-control and I ended up watching the whole video last night and I should be working right now, but I just wanted to get my thoughts out. First of all, yes!! please give us more slice of life content haha This video concept is genius, I follow a lot of content creators that do manga review, but I've never seen one with a live reaction to it which is cool because we will be able to see your reaction 'raw' to the crazy panels TG offers in the future. I know reading manga is kind of confusing at the beginning, but you guys will get used to it in no time. Mckay has a 10/10 on his reading, his "hehe" were the funniest part of the video for me lol. When you get to upload this to youtube, be careful with the manga pages, actually the copyright with manga is a lot stricter than anime, so be mindful with the timer and maybe blur the page except what you are reading, I dunno is just a few things I've seen others do. The first time I watched TG was when it first aired in 2014, it got well known in the anime community and I actually really like the first season, I liked it so much that I started reading the manga and I went from liking it to loving it, Sui Ishida's story telling is amazing but while I noticed that a few things were different in the anime, it was not a big deal, I understand that an adaptation doesn't really need to be a 1:1 from the source material to be good, and I genuinely enjoyed S1. S2 on the other hand it deviates from the manga, it just tells a "what if this character did B instead of A as in the manga" and I mean, cool, but the story had so many problems, plot holes, things that didn't make sense and it was so chaotic that I actually fell out of love a little bit from the whole story (not just the anime). I stopped reading the manga at some point before TG:re was announced as anime adaptation. I actually thought they weren't going to adapt it because S2 was different from the manga, what a surprise (and let down) discovering that they actually just said "we are not going to fix the story before, but here is the next part" so people that actually liked the anime and were anime-only hated it because it didn't make sense, there was no way an anime-only viewer would know what the hell happened so we ended up with the story as it was presented. It was a mess. I didn't watch S3 or the other anime adaptation, actually up to this day I haven't even finished the manga, I bought the first 2 volumes of TG:re to motivate me but, I haven't actually found the motivation in all those years...I know how it ends, I don't know how we get to that end tho, I'm very confident that I'll like it whenever I get to finish it. Ishida is just amazing, and his art style evolved in such a way that later some of the panels and illustrations look like paintings. Very recently I saw an illustration he did for his current manga and even though I don't read it I used it as my wallpaper bc it's chef kiss. Please continue this type of videos, thinking what it could be with future mangas, I still dream with a day were you guys read 20th Century Boys by Naoki Urasawa one of my favorite pieces of media ever.

The perfect manga for this series would be KINGDOM. I'm currently reading it the second time since the beginning of this year. And i am convinced if the anime was nearly as good as the manga we would talk about it a lot more. The problem with the anime is that the first two season are CGI animated and it looks really bad but also the later seasons dont do justice to the manga. So i would totally recommend to read it and the you could try to watch it lmao. It isn't finished but there are over 800 Chapters so i guess you'd have a lot of content.

Tokyo ghoul is literally my favorite manga ever! I love it. The art style and writing is amazing!! The anime is good but season 2 kinda threw everything off. It's still a story you should experience. I read the whole manga for Beserk last summer. I read it over watching it because I heard mixed reviews of the animated show. So, summer of 2024 was complete despair and emotional for me😂. Even though I do have my few criticisms on it, Beserk is tied with One Piece as my number 1 favorite manga. I really do hope that one day they do a animated remake of Beserk and give it more justice, but before then if yall do decide to read it, I wonder how that would go. Like what Mckay said, you guys aint ready for some of these panels, for me I needed to take breaks. It will definitely be more of a serious tone, but if you guys are up for it in the future, I'll definitely tune into it. Even though I am scared😂. Never seen a manga reaction, that's crazy but I like it. Seeing the anime adaptation right after might get tiresome after a while for you guys though. You guys could use an AI for the text in the manga that would read it out loud, but not sure how that would work. Tokyo Ghoul, I read a huge chunk of it but not a huge fun gotta be honest. Really interesting to see how they remixed the scenes and did so much foreshadowing in the anime! I both read and watched Tokyo Ghoul forever and a year ago, but because often times there's a decent gap between me reading the manga and watching the anime I don't always notice just how many scenes are changed or moved around until I go back. This was fun! Especially knowing it's your guys first time reading manga, haha - since I grew up reading manga and comics both, it happened occasionally that I'd find myself start off by reading the panels in the order pertaining to the other instead of what was currently in hand lol, luckily its pretty easy to notice quick! Also if you guys do this again I wonder if choosing characters to voice and switch off between might be easier? Since changing tones between characters can definitely be harder on first reads and all~ Cannon's "grin, dude" and Mckay's "teeheehee" and "heeheehee"s when he had to voice Rize made me laugh LMAO (sidenote: Rize's pronounced more with a 'zay' sort of sound at the end - but I feel like your guys pronunciation with a lot of Japanese names has improved quite a bit!) p.s. Blood types are somewhat akin to astrology in Japan, in the sense that they're each associated with a different personality! This is part of why you'll see them in character bios and such (like the midcards for MHA), and why it wasn't really strange for Rize and Kaneki to talk about it

Ngl i love the reading the manga part and the discussions. I have ADHD, and I find manga difficult to read because of all the panels and my brain trying to remember to read the correct way. It's just a sensory overload when manga is thrown into my already jumbled brain. I used TTS all throughout college to get through textbooks, and in a similar way, you guys reading out loud helps me focus on the story. Both the manga and the anime has a noticeable difference more so from the perpective of a writer than a viewer. The chapters youve read are like unedited essays that haven’t been compressed to immediately get straight to the point. Each scene, you have to ask: "Whats the point of this scene?" The purpose of asking such questions is to determine wether or not the scene contributes to the development of the story or character. For example, the scene at Big Girl Restaurant 25:00 and the following scene with the kid 27:00 are completely gone in the anime. Why were those scenes deleted? What was their point? Well, to show Kaneki's inability to eat normal food as well as the start of his hunger as a ghoul. But the points made were already established in the hospital scene at 23:20, with the descriptions of why he couldn’t eat the food. Hence the reason why they didnt include restaurant scene in the anime. Likewise, the scene with the girl effectively shows his hunger setting in, but it feels almost pointless since it doesn't lead to any major development. In contrast, the scene at 33:20 does. His hunger peaks, and he discovers his red eye in the bathroom. The point being, scenes that repeat the same message and doesnt lead to the development of the story and main character are cut away.

Reading the manga(referring to the ones you guys read), and watching episode 1 theres a noticable difference between the two more so from the perspective of a writer than a viewer. In my opinion Fujimoto is in a league of his own with the way he does storytelling through his panels as well as his artistic ability. The detailing is so good and it's a rollercoaster of a story. cannon the whole "manga is better than anime" is only made clear with really horrible adaptations. most adaptations are not 1:1 to the manga due to directional choices. i always said anime is like a gift to manga readers. being caught up with the manga and seeing how a director or a storyboard writer would allude to future things or throw in eater eggs for the manga readers. even the way they construct scenes in a certain way to make sure there's a rising action a climax and a somewhat a conclusion(even if the conclusion was left as a cliffhanger) to fit an episode. seeing manga fans complain about the anime not being 1:1 always annoyed me since yall already read the manga you got that vision, why complain if the director took liberty in adapting. and im not talking about anime that adds unnecessary filler, im referring to fans going panel by panel and compare it o the anime and complain that it got butchered.

Yooooooo Tokyo Ghoul a classic, I haven't watched this in like 7 years or somethin. Tokyo Ghoul also got one of the most iconic anime openings of all time, shit is a banger. Cool that you guys are getting into reading manga, I only read online but it's really really fun keeping up with some of them, especially ongoing ones the anime isn't up to yet. If I could recommend one even if not for the channel but just for personal fun, Goodbye Eri is a oneshot manga (meaning just like a short story) by the creator of Chainsaw Man Tatsuki Fujimoto that is actually pure cinema and so meaningful. The great thing about manga is that you really get a sense of the style the different manga authors have that sometimes anime can't convey for budget and other reasons. For example Fujimotos linework and art is actually a fucking unreal beautiful style that is uniquely his. Chainsaw Man is definitely in my top 3 manga I keep up with rn. Another example is Sakamoto days, the anime couldn't really do it justice, but the manga has insane linework and the author expresses motion and fight choreography so brilliantly. But again the biggest thing is just they're so fun to read. Even though I love chainsaw man, sakamoto days and others, and One Piece is my favourite oat, Blue Lock is definitely my favourite manga to keep up with and most anticipated between chapters. Actually so fucking fire it's unreal, and the recent chapters have taken the series to new levels, I'm so excited to see what's next . It's actually such a good series, you guys DEFINITELY have to watch it on this channel as one of your next shows, such a unique sports anime and manga is even better.

This is why the Big 3 are often better experienced through the manga. You get the author’s original vision, the pacing is much smoother, and you avoid the issue of the anime stretching half or even just one chapter into a full 20–25 minute episode. Plus, there’s no filler that can interrupt the flow. Imagine if you could do this for major arcs like Marineford in One Piece — read the manga first, then react to the anime episodes right after. Spending the whole night binging through both versions would be absolutely insane and such a unique experience. The same goes for Naruto, or when you eventually get to Bleach. This is the reason why I don't read the manga. some people compare the anime to the original source and might get disappointed if some scenes were cutout. Anime has a different direction. Animation can make it more interesting or not depending on how the production will be done. Three reasons why I prefer Anime over manga: 1. Animation 2. Voice Acting 3. Music No hate here. If you prefer reading over watching. Go for it as long as you are having fun.

oh another tip for reading manga, normaly, whenever you see black borders or background, a lot of the times it simbolizes that the scene hapened in the past, not all the time tho this manga likes to use black borders more freely if i remember

I really loved this experience! You guys should maybe try alternating reading the manga first, or watching the episode first. I think they both have their benefits. The anime has to make edits to make a show flow better, but if you watch it, it sometimes also helps reading the manga go smoother. Honestly, there is no downside to either way in my opinion. But overall I love Tokyo Ghoul so im excited for y'all to enjoy the story.

Manga is such a beautiful thing for me. I LOVE reading but ever since I was a kid I have had a really hard time with like “walls of text”. My eyes go blurry, words get jumbled and I end up spending more energy trying to remember what I read versus actually reading lol. That’s why I love manga. I’m a really visual person and the fact it’s short text, really helps me concentrate and immerse myself into what I’m reading. It’s like the pages turn to color and move in my mind while I’m reading lol.

I love how much thought you put into your content. I don’t think I have ever been as satisfied with a channel as much as I have been with yours. I am so happy with this decision bcs for most of us who love tokyo ghoul, we all know that the anime does not do the story justice but just reading the manga also deprives of some of the positive aspects of the anime. This arrangement is just the best of both worlds. And I do realize its double the amount of work for you guys but just know: IT IS SEEN AND APPRECIATED 🥹 I just know that so many people would have just watched the anime and just left it at that but it would not have been a very satisfactory watch (for both the reactor and the people watching the reactions). This is great, I watched the anime about 4 years ago, and it was extremely hit and and mostly miss. I read the entire manga just like a year ago, and it became one of my favorite stories.

Despite the criticism of the anime, the OSt is top tier. The first season stays decently faithful to the anime and is still really good in my opinion, You will see drastic changes in season 2 onwards,

loved this! this show gets more hate than it deserves imo, the manga is better, but s1 is good. s2 is not as good but its not terrible either. The VA for Kaneki does such a good job! and the OP by TK is one of the best!

I absolutely love how you guys just naturally stumbled into the idea of audiobooks when you were introducing what this series is going to be.

At 1:12:48, I completely agree. The show by itself is good, the manga is great, but if you read the manga first, you're not going to enjoy the show nearly as much with Tokyo Ghoul. I'd recommend watching the show first and then cover the manga afterwards.

AOT is my first manga read because i cant wait for season 2 back then..lol reading manga is so hard at first but when you get used to it its a whole different story!

Censorship was a large complaint for the anime when it was airing i believe. Overall the 1st season is good minus that

1:16:35 Usually the first chapter or two of a manga is extremely long. You have to hook readers with your first chapter so it's fine to have a long chapter as their debut chapter. For example, My Hero Academia's first chapter is episodes 1 and 2. Wild. Usually a volume covers around 3-4 episodes
