I mean, for most of us it too A WHILE to get all the hierarchies and relative importance of characters right. And I think that the way Aokiji is introduced is deliberately downplayed (very laid-back and just waffling about, more or less). The way Zoro does his ”identify yourselves” (na-nore) is connected with his bushi/samurai characterisation. In Edo/Tokugawa era Japan, it was how samurai identified themselves and their affiliation on the battlefield before engaging in battle. Part of it was to know who you killed (if you won), so that you know how much honour you won (for taking down a strong enemy). So really, that Zoro asks for it here is a sort of acknowledgement. They’re no real threat, but he takes more notice than if they’d been nothing but common thieves. I also think that the reason he used an attack that creates a shockwave to avoid killing them so as to not leave a pile of corpses around their ship, probably. As for Kaku, his name literally does mean ”square”, (or angle), so yeah. Basically square Usopp. XD Love the end discussion, lol. But yeah, this is a point where everyone gets pretty taken aback when reaching, I think! About the realism, I think that it does work with the world’s internal realism. That is, we have been shown that people are way, WAY more durable than in our world, but physics seems to work pretty much the same. Things can break beyond repair (see Zoro’s first swords; it’s impossible to reforge katana due to how they’re made), there is gravity, friction, and thermodynamics. The whole premise of Luffy’s fight with Ener was that Luffy’s an insulator. Fluid makes sand solid. You can’t make sakura grow on a winter island but you can make a chemical reaction happen in the snow. And so on. Also, there’s still not a lot of filler this early, but the scene where Kaku is looking under the deckboards actually IS a filler scene. He’d only be able to see the ballast or the bilge water from looking under the deck. Paulie does mention the keel at the end (which in Japanese is written as ”dragon bone”, btw!) so he must have seen it, it’s just that it’s not possible to see it from inside the ship. The other filler scenes are basically, hm, how should I put it… extra lines that make Luffy look more childish? It’s only a little bit, but I think that’s why he seems so immature here. I mean, more than he is naturally. He IS childish a lot of the time, which I think is definitely one of the best things about him, it’s just that the balance feels a little off here.

I promise I'm not mad or anything, I love seeing what you guys have to say and wouldn't want that to change, it's part of the fun and the experience. But I am curious because I feel like a lot of the faults you Geks sometimes fixate on are unfair, or at the very least are like you guys criticizing things for being illogical, but your critiques themselves are like so fallacious and illogical. Like the whole ship thing, which I'm purely just talking about your guys reaction to the idea of it. Mckay's line of thinking is 'there are so many crazier ships in One Piece, how could they not fix an ordinary ship', and everyone seemed to agree with this, that Oda missed the mark on this plot point. But surely you guys can't actually think that, like how would you call another person illogical when that line of thinking is so like, I don't wanna say dumb but that's just wild to me. You could deadass apply that logic to real world scenarios, it's like saying if we could fix an issue on plane to get it working, something so technologically advanced, why could we not fix a decaying and ruined fishing boat. Like there are so many factors at play, the type of issue, the size of the issue, the severity of the damage, the significance of the damaged area. And I know it's different, and you're saying there are more elaborate ships in One Piece verse, so why couldn't they fix a simpler boat, but then you have to consider how it is a simple boat. Maybe it's not made with the same quality as these larger insane ships, maybe the parts and the craftsmanship aren't as good. Within this verse's logic, how is this idea this bewildering to you guys? You guys bring up the point of people being able to freeze an ocean, or ride a bike on it but not be able to fix a ship, like these things wouldn't be mutually exclusive. Every fantasy world has to have grounded parts in it, to stabilise the ungrounded parts. That's like saying how can Naruto make the wind shuriken jutsu which breaks down the literal Cells in your body, or Pain can level a whole ass village, but they haven't made guns. Or what, in AOT they made odm gear and THUNDER SPEARS, but couldn't make aerial travel or hot air ballons or anything until it was shown to them. Like you just have to accept that different concepts have evolved at different rates in these universes. Not only that but, but like do you guys know about building ships, how are you this confident this type of thing couldn't exist haha. When I see something like this, I go oh maybe I'm about to learn something, or at the very least I'm open minded because I know I don't know about the subject. Even when you guys are talking about how they could just saw of the entire bottom and rebuild it, like you guys are literally arguing 'The ship of Theseus' at this point, like many philosophers couldn't agree on this but what the Geks have figured it out hahaha Idk, I hope this doesn't seem hateful because I really truly don't mean it to be, but I just get pressed when I see other people complaining about something being bad writing or illogical when their own reasoning for why seems flawed for so many reasons. Good point, that’s how it is in the real world lol. Why do we think Australia has so many more bizarre animals and wildlife compared to the rest of the world? A lot of people love the merry and were emotional about this situation including reactors and myself. I’ve seen both sides of the spectrum, love & pain and people who couldn’t care less. It reaches me emotional because I view the crew getting the a solid ship that is the merry as the first true sign that they are properly on their sailing journey and I’m sentimental about those sorts of things and it seems like the straw hats feel the same way about the merry too. Not to mention all the big moments in the series we’ve seen the merry be apart of. It’s like your first car or childhood home

I feel like the end debate is more about the technologies in the show. and Its a whole subject, so far we saw that all the islands are having more or less technologies, so some Islands are ahead some are behind for exemple, the islands at the begining are Less technology advanced than the Grand Line Islands. but overall I would say that Water 7 still has great technologies. the puff tom and the whole island in itself are great exemples. so it is Totaly normal to see Ener Getting to the moon and then see them have troubles to repair the ship, the islands are having a lot of différencies toward their technologies. it is almost like if every island had their own specifical evolution and developpement.

Just to clear things up with at least how I felt about it, we’re not saying things being realistic in One Piece is bad or that Oda shouldn’t use it. We’re just pointing out how funny it is that the show goes full cartoon logic for hundreds of episodes, flying ships, all the devil fruit powers, and then suddenly gets super serious and realistic when it comes to the Going Merry not being fixable. Obviously due to these comments it’s necessary to further the plot with the ship and we don’t know why yet, and it’s not hate, it’s just noticing a shift in tone that caught us off guard. All respect to Oda, he’s fantastic. Just felt pulled out of the story for a sec with this and I guarantee it’s for a reason.

The keel is mega i portant to a ship, it is a singular piece of wood that isnt necessarily fragile but its basically the boats spine, fuck it up and youre never moving again. Sure theres an infinite amount of possibilities to get the merry to the next island but theyd all be wack things that would essentially be building a whole new boat regardless. What would be lazy writing is having a normal boat that magically never takes damage, the fact that you can basically piece together all the major scars on the merry to plot points is peak one piece writing, kinda like still being able to occasionally see the 3 slits buggy made in the straw hat

Oh did want to clarify when they were talking with Iceberg and Kalifa and the bags go stolen, you can actually see the bags get sent flying when Kalifa suddenly kicks everyone, and so that is why they got taken so easily. It's not like someone got right next to Usopp without Iceberg seeing, the bags Usopp had were already knocked away from the group

Honestly, the lack of common sense in this reaction. The "logic" you guys are using could literally be used to criticise any single work of fiction! Literally any single one! You could take any fictional aspect of any fictional world and use it to "debunk" all of its realistic aspects! And that would be a stupid thing to do! The nature of any fictional world is exclusively designed by the author/s, not the audience. And in the one piece world, ships actually decay! And yes when a keel is damaged the entire ship needs to be rebuilt because the keel is the spine of the ship which the rest of the ship is built upon! And the rest of the wood will eventually succumb to rot until the going merry is nothing but a pile of rotten planks! A fictional world is fully capable of having realistic principles! Let me use another example from the one piece world to show this flawed argument mckay was making. During the fight between Enel and Luffy, we as the audience realised that because luffy was rubber, he acted as an insulator against enel's lightning, this is a scientific principle that is even present in the real world! But i didnt hear any criticism from you guys when something like that, something actually realistic happened. Why didnt you make that same criticism there and say that oda was stupid for picking and choosing what he wanted to be realistic and unrealistic during that fight? Why didnt you complain about that like you're doing now about realistic ship-building? So physics can be accepted in fiction when you want to but not when you dont feel like it??? Why pick and choose? Why ignore the basic rules of fictional world building? Why are you pretending like any work of fiction you have experienced wasnt a collection of things that are possible and impossible in the real world? NOT A SINGLE FICTIONAL WORLD IS ENTIRELY FICTIONAL. Why choose to forget that all works of fiction also possess realistic aspects? Jack is so right on the point. All fictions are realism mixed with unrealism and what’s important is whether the setup is consistent. Otherwise all fictional stories would receive nonstop criticisms because when plots being fantasy setup people can say it being not realistic and vice verse. Like when watching Harry Potter ask how can a broom fly and then question why they follow the real world rules like they need to eat food or women give birth to babies, can’t they just drink magical water or cant baby be created using magic. Any plot can be criticized if so. In the story up to this point we’ve never seen another ship got broken like this and being fixed like it’s not a big deal, then it’s definitely not bad writing or flawed because it’s not contradicting any of its own setup.

I think the shipwrights are trying to say that although the keel could be replaced, it would take more time and effort compared to just building a new ship. Also you would have to destroy most of the merry just to fix the keel, meaning It's not really the same ship anyway.

Just because One Piece has many unrealistic aspects to it doesn't mean that every part of the show should follow in that same way. One of the best parts of One Piece is how Oda manages to tackle some of the heaviest topics (Grief, racism, slavery, etc) while still keeping the world fun and lighthearted! It's the mix between the two that gives the characters real motivations, and I think that is the case here with the Going Merry. You might not agree, but I think it would be cheaper to just "magically" fix the ship from the amount of damage it has taken as opposed to forcing the Straw Hats to tackle their emotions surrounding the possibility of getting rid of the Going Merry.

Also just for context: irl you can technically replace the keel but it’s very difficult and it’s not the same ship anymore. It’s like the spine of a ship so everything else is hooked to it. It would be a careful disassembly of the whole ship around a new keel which is more than just building a new ship. And honestly if a ships keel is replaced, good chance the rest of the ship isnt in good condition enough to be dissasembled saftely. So everything would need to be dissembled and it’s basically like destroying the ship. The question then becomes: is it even the same ship anymore? Is it worth it? 🤔

Funny enough, this stems from the story of Theseus’s ship when an ancient philosopher raised a question: If no pieces of the original made up the current ship, was it still the Ship of Theseus? Furthermore, if it was no longer the same, when had it ceased existing as the original ship? It’s a huge topic in the philosophical study of identity over time and its persistance. Edit since I’m seeing lots of backlash in these comments: I think their reaction is totally understandable! I’ve had my fair share of questionable moments with the logic of one piece…also this is just the beginning of the Merry discussion there’s so much more context that’ll be added to the conversation that they’ll be able to go back and forth with but this really is just the beginning.

Just for context if no one has answered the Going Merry Keel Damage: - You can replace the keel - Everything is hooked up to the keel, so you basically need to remove everything around the keel to replace it - The wear and tear of the parts around the keel are in just as bad condition, so if you replaced the keel it would just be 1 new piece surrounded by a bunch of old and damaged parts - That being said it is absolutely possible to replace the keel. To me they were just implying that it would take more work to replace the keel than to make a new ship from scratch. BUT a very good shipwright COULD get the job done Also, as far as the One Piece World, we have NOT seen any healers whatsoever. This has been a constant in the show so I don’t view it as a flaw. Yes I understand theres a lot of magic and unrealistic things but if you can keep the realistic aspects a constant that is fine by me. They have Chopper on the squad for a reason. Id only have an issue if a billion healers just appear out of nowhere later in the show.

To be fair a lot of the ships you guys mentioned in the discussion likely haven’t taken the amount of damage the merry has like going up reverse mountain and falling from the sky. More importantly though the strawhats never had a shipwright to make proper repairs whenever the ship took damage. They always tried to patch her up but without the proper skills it was like putting a bandaid on a gaping wound.
