I can understand certain criticisms of him over what the series does with his character but as a character there should be no reason that people fully hate Deku. You can criticize how his character is sometimes handled but not his character itself. Him crying periodically is a stupid thing to bitch about. Not everyone wants a super edgelord teenage MC who doesn't show emotion or doesn't cry. I personally have always liked that he cries and it doesn't happen much after the first couple of seasons anyways.

2025-05-21 05:40:22 +0000 UTCThe thing about Bakugo is, that he got all his self worth as a child from other people telling him his quirk is awesome and that he will be a great hero because of it. However even as a child he started feeling inadequate when Deku, the powerless kid, was acting more like a hero because Deku recognizes when people are in need of help and immediately acts on it. He doesn't realize it at the time, but Deku makes him so mad because it confronts him with everything that he isn't. Once he is then also confronted with people like Todoroki that have arguably even stronger quirks, even that doesn't make him feel good anymore and he is just angry that he is neither the strongest nor is he a kind and empathetic hero right now. Bakugo is basically just a very serious case of imposter syndrome. His entire life he is told he is amazing because of his quirk, something he was born with out of his control. As he grows up this becomes harder and harder for him to deal with, as he matures and realizes his shortcomings. Aizawa, All Might, and even some of the spectators at this point have pointed out multiple times that Bakugo is actually much more aware and thoughtful than he appears, not just in terms of battle IQ. Like you can see when Bakugo goes all out, he can create some absolutely ridiculous explosions, but he controls them to not hurt people, even as he is shouting "DIE!" over and over at them while doing it. He is starting to become more and more aware of this, and even says this almost directly in this episode to All Might. "Even if the world recognizes it, if I don't recognize it myself, then it's trash!". This is already massive character growth, because he now realizes he needs to be comfortable with himself, and not sustain his self worth with external sources like people praising his quirk. tl;dr Bakugo is such a well written character and the perfect foil for Deku.

I think, whether they even realize it or not, the reason the haters hate Deku is the type of MC he is. Most, if not all, Shonnen MCs exude confidence. Deku is the only emotionally vulnerable MC I can think of in the Shonnens I have seen. I think that really turns off a certain crowd of people. Because I have been wondering the same thing for YEARS now. I don’t know that I would say Deku is my favorite or anything. But he fits this story so I think he’s a great MC for the story that’s trying to be told. Like, I’m not going to spoil anything but the consistency in character writing allowed me to know EXACTLY how Midorya would respond to the big bad in ssn 7 all the way back in ssn 3. And I was correct. I’ve said it before and I will say it again; I really appreciate that Allmight and Deku are written as true heroes. I had my fill of the “broken and flawed Dark Knight” clones in all superhero media we were getting. That’s fine, I love The Dark Knight. Best Batman movie ever. But not everything has to be that 😂

(Not people from this comment section) We don’t know what would’ve happened. Bakugo has a strong quirk, analytical skills, quick reflexes, and close-combat abilities just like Todoroki. Both of them are very smart and strong, so claiming that Todoroki definitely would’ve won if he had used his fire is, in my opinion, absurd. One thing’s for sure, it would’ve been quite a spectacle to see them fight at full power.

MHA watch order goes (ideally + reasons): Season 2 -> Movie 1: Two Heroes Season 3 -> Season 4 -> Season 5 (Ep 1 to 16) Movie 3: World Heroes' Mission Season 5 (Ep 17 to 25) -> Movie 2: Heroes Rising Season 6 -> Season 7 (Ep 1-4) -> Movie 4: You're Next Season 7 (Ep 5-21) I know this looks super weird, but according to my extensive research, in the canon manga timeline, movie 2 comes before movie 3, but since Studio Bones messed up the order of the arcs in the second half of S5, the events of movie 3 now happens sometime in the middle of S5, while movie 2 happens after S5's ending, even though the studio released the two movies in the opposite order. OR, y'all can watch movie 2 after S5 Ep12, and movie 3 after S5 ends (this is what most reactors do if I'm not wrong, cause there are spoilers in movie 2 that aren't revealed until the middle of S5).

2025-05-18 06:52:31 +0000 UTCI didn’t have any issues with Dekus character at this point in the series (other than the fact that he can’t seem to have nuanced feelings about Bakugo and must constantly glaze him…). He was extremely easy to relate to and made you want to root for him! I also think he stood out in comparison to the other shounen mcs at the time. Nowadays you see much more kind hearted/emotional mcs (Yuji, Tanjiro, Mob etc), but at the time, Deku was an outlier and that was a major part of why ppl hated on him (they called him a “cry baby” but dw, I was always on the frontlines defending him 🫡) I really really loved him, but around when Act 3 started, IMO, he gets such little introspection (especially considering the things he’s put through) and basically becomes a shell of himself. What once made him fun and unique was just gone. It’s more of an issue I had with, what I felt, was an overall decline in the writing for that final act. All this ultimately affected my enjoyment of these characters and the series in general.

He's had a couple of moments where he couldn't explain why he likes Katsuki and it's so funny because it's so true for a lot of Katsuki fans JHBHWJBEb But more importantly the Katsuki VA appreciation is very much welcome. I love his voice so much, especially knowing how much effort he puts into each of his characters' lines. The little squeaks and voice pitches in Katsuki's screaming and yelling must be so taxing on Nobuhiko's throat. I pray he's always able to recover after a voice acting session. Katsuki is one of those characters who seem like a one-dimensional crash out on the first watch for a lot of people, but is actually someone who has much more emotional depth and complexity, which is smth people realise during the rewatches. After reading the manga nearly till the end, seeing particular scenes of him makes me so emotional. All the little things about Katsuki that didn't really make sense or only made partial sense before seem SO clear now. It's surreal. I can't wait for the Geks to see more of him.

2025-05-18 06:22:55 +0000 UTCTo clarify some things: - All Might was always a huge guy. When he was young, he never needed to "flex" to grow to his official hero size. But because of the fight that cost him his entire stomach and damaged his respiratory organs, and the multiple surgery procedures he went through just to regain some semblance of normalcy in his life, his body very likely couldn't maintain his muscular, jacked form. So he compensates for that by doing his "flexing". For Izuku, it's highly unlikely that he will ever be as big as All Might was/is. All Might is VERY tall, standing at 220cm (or 7 feet 3 inches). Izuku will probably grow taller since he's only around 15-16 now, but he prob still will never be as big as All Might (who really was an exception in every way lmfao) - Kirishima's hardening is very much a quirk that relies on his endurance. It makes sense that he can't harden his entire body for hours at a time at only age 15-16. They are all growing children, and their quirks are also developing alongside their base physical abilities (throwback to when Katsuki said that quirks are physical abilities too in S2 Ep10). Thus, Kirishima lost to Katsuki because his endurance reached its limit and his hardening weakened as a result.

Deku is a 15 year old child, he cries, gets anxious, is kinda a loser. He's reckless and impatient so he's always getting injured. Back in that time anything that was about showing emotions was seeing as too girly and bad. A lot of anime fans took pride of being this edgelord that was cold, because they were cool like that lol After the big 3, Deku was the first shonen MC that went massive, but Deku is an emotional kid and he is capable of showing sadness and frustration, and he cries a normal amount, so everyone started with the "crybaby" thing and that's why he is hated. And the show is hated on kinda for the same thing, during those times, whatever show that was "mainstream" and attracted non anime fans was deemed as bad. Then the fandom was very vocal about defending the show and that morphed in the notion that we have now that the mha fandom is very annoying. I never really interacted with the fandom and I've seen bad and good things in it as any other fandom. I guess it's just that mha was held against a standard that doesn't even exist anymore and since it was different to that standard that automatically made it bad for veteran anime fans.

Occasionally, bakugou will let off blasts to get rid of excess sweat, as his glands are likely overstretched from producing so much nitroglycerin on the daily, that he needs to blow it up every once and a while! Also, the scene where he's chained up has a direct parallel to a frame from when he was kidnapped by the sludge villain in s1. Most people have made the connection that he was a little uncomfortable in that scene because he was having ptsd, even if he didn't know that's what it was. Personally, I think that he was upset that he was made a fool of in front of thousands of people, and the parallel only added to his stress

Liking it way more than when i first watched it! for the other commenters arguing about dub and sub (only a few of you but i still wanna weigh in lol), i can def understand the love for the dub, because it does cater to english viewers more with its interpretative dialogue. unfortunately, in my opinion, the quality of the voice acting in dub is quite bad except for all might. The sub just clears by miles, and the geks watch everything in sub, so i think we should just drop this topic for the sake of everyones sanity on both sides hahaha. also, if you feel a disconnect with the sub and the dub captures more of your attention and emotion, thats totally valid! however, just know that the reason is likely because of the syntax and prose of the subtitles rather than the actual quality of voice actors. if you understand japanese, the voice acting (although sometimes cringy and exaggerative) is extremiely high quality in JP.

A lot of it comes from people not knowing how to handle a male mc who’s vulnerable instead of being all stoic and cold but that’s what makes him so special. He represents everything MHA stands for, and he’s easily the most inspiring character in the show. Real fans know this, so don’t hold back on loving him just because of the noise. He deserves all the appreciation he can get

But people try to pretend anyone that doesn't love Deku is just some a-hole or edge lord. Nah, there are legitimate reasons. Thus far, he has shown no competence at anything. He is a decently hard worker. But he was handed power on a silver platter, he didn't earn anything with merit. He has a heart of gold. He has no urgency to come up with a solution to his problem, he needs like 5 people to tell him to "find a way to use his power without breaking" and he still hasn't tried. And when you compare him with Asta, Naruto, Ichigo, Luffy, etc .. he just doesn't stand out. Tanjiro is much more of as standout of this generation. Like it or not, he is being compared to GOATs of Shounen. By this time in their story, all the other MC's had put a lot more work in. He's still good, don't get it twisted, but especially on rewatch do you notice more shortcomings of the guy. We root for him because we are meant to. He's alright

It was nice that we saw the flashback of him saying he didn’t think he could’ve won against Shoto when they had the class battles and he probably came up with the howitzer afterwards. As for Shoto’s mom, it makes sense Endeavor put her in a hospital after she had a mental breakdown that endangered their youngest, but I love that Shoto is thinking about helping her heal mentally as a way to save her from being there. As for what this arc is similar to in terms of other animes, it’s like the Hunter x Hunter tournament where Gon and Killua learned nen and in Naruto it would be the last bit of the Chunin exam, right before Gaara went berserk, and where Sasuke used his newly learned Chidori.

Poor Ida 🥺 this next arc is one of my favorite in the series I can’t wait 😩😩 I enjoy both dubs and subs but MHA dub the dialogue is soooooo much better. The dub dialogue puts more heart in the show. Is the best way to put it. Even the jokes are better. It’s Like the dub of MHA isn’t just translating they are catering to the English audience and adding things for the English audience

It is the same thing that happened with Sung Jin-Woo crying. But also, it makes a lot of sense why Deku cries so much.: 1. He was born quirkless in a world where quirks are the norm. 2. His father is not present in his life. 3. He has been bullied all his life. 4. As soon as he gets a quirk, he can not control it and he shatters his bones any time he uses it. Also, Bakugo hate back in the day was overblown because people didn't want to engage with his character. Don't get me wrong, you can dislike him that's perfectly fine but some people just don't want to discuss the details of his character at all. You have to understand that MHA had the misfortune of getting the brunt of the hate from many anime fans for being the first big shounen to really go mainstream after the Big 3 (OP, Bleach, Naruto) with which many people grew up with. So in a way the anime fans were like you described Bakugo in your discussion, both having a superiority and inferiority complex towards it. At this point people grew up on shounen tropes like the power of friendship etc. and after not being a kid anymore many 14 y.o wanted to be edgy and didn't appreciate MHA earnestness and positivity. On the other hand, many only compared MHA with the big 3, not being able to let nostalgia go. Stuff like caliing Deku green Naruto and Bakugo blond Sasuke (which doesn't even make sense). Also, MHA came at a time when social media started playing a big role in fandom spaces. Whatever ship wars, toxicity, death threats towards animators and authors was happening before on fandom specific forums (and trust me, big 3 shounen fans were bonkers just like they are today), now was on full display for the internet to witness even if you were not part of the fandom. Also, just the pure fact that MHA was very popular and broke new ground into the West for anime as being an accessible show for normies. All of this was a perfect cocktail for MHA and Deku to be hated.

We saw this happen to Jin-Woo when he cried and there was so much hate for it and we saw it happen to Mark in Invincible where he got so much slander for crying as well even from popular creators like Speed. That's why in anime parodies like for example RDC anime house they'll always portray his character as someone who cries or is soft even though that's far from the case. I will always defend Deku whenever people try to use the "crybaby Deku" as an insult
