FINALLY! This arc and the next one are what truly sold me on One Piece being one of my favorite stories. Honestly I think, for the gek boys, this arc/saga is better to take in gradually rather than binge. I feel the arc after would be better to binge and knock out quick(iykyk) and Jack will probably use one pace for it too. They’ll reach that arc this year so it’ll fall within one piece week range.

One Peak has begun. If One Piece week involves the Geks bingeing a large chunk of an arc, then One Piece episodes 297-325 (or the One Pace equivalent) would be the best group of episodes to do that imo. 270-278 is also a goated sequence of episodes.

THE DRASTIC TONE SHIFT IS FINALLY HERE, god you can cut the tension with a knife at the end of 230 its so awesome. Water 7 is one of my favorite fictional locations ever just based on aesthetic, but as far as content, the next 100 episodes turned me into a one piece fan for life. Arlong Park hooked me, but Water 7 saga grabbed me and never let go. This saga is a nice tonal shift in the story and really opens up the world of One Piece like we've never seen before. Oda expands on previous ideas, introduces very interesting new ones layering it with mystery and adding more questions for us. Personally, it felt like everything we've seen thus far was more like an introduction or a prologue, and now the real story begins. I think Oda found his stride/footing here and went crazy with it.

Oda likes to set the scene, so it pays to pay attention to the details! And people’s reactions. I can’t stress enough how important the non-verbal reactions are (in manga/anime in general, of course, but Oda uses that a lot). Also, what is left unsaid in the dialogue. Consider what Robin's line "It's a habit. Since childhood, I survived by listening to those around me and gauging their feelings." says about her life. But yeah, there’s a lot of buildup, both with the setting and plot, which makes it really satisfying when the pieces start to slot together. It’s not always going to be Luffy in the new eyecatchers, I don’t recall when they change though. The person who said ”CP9” really said ”CP9 desu”, which is more like ”I’m CP9”. Some sidenotes: The ”mattemashita!” that Usopp calls out when Luffy reenacts being frozen does literally mean ”I/we’ve been waiting!” but it’s the phrase you’re supposed to call out for great (or just your favourite) Kabuki performers as they come on stage. Also, calling out of the performer’s name (which interestingly is also the norm in rock concerts, at least for Japanese bands even today.). It shows up a lot in manga in scenes like this, with jokey performances. Puffing Tom is inspired by the name from the real steam engine Puffng Billy, the UK locomotive that was built in the early 19th century, but it actually looks almost exactly like the American steam locomotive CP no. 60 from the same time period. https://www.up.com/cs/groups/public/@uprr/@customers/documents/image/img_tr_1868_jupiter.jpg For those wondering, there’s minimal filler in the first part of this arc, it’s pretty much one to one with the manga (and one pace) here. Those masks are a long standing part of Venetian culture, mainly in the past to be used for social status distinction and hiding ones face but these days is usually worn just for the annual Carnival.
