It reminds me of what Kruger says about the Founder Ymir: “Anyone can be a god or a devil, it just takes people to believe it.” It doesn’t matter what or who he actually is, Eren is a figure people can channel their fear and anger into and ultimately someone they can “mythologize” in order to be who they need him to be. It’s a pretty classic representation of how fascist ideologies take root, but that’s a way bigger discussion 😅

2025-05-13 21:46:23 +0000 UTCIt was immediately clear to me that the way Eren chooses to hurt his friends, but particularly Mikasa—by calling her a slave and saying he hates her—is classic projection. He’s very clearly talking about himself, and I think there’s plenty of evidence to support that at this point in the story without him having to clearly state it. The fact that he can’t accept she might love him “without a reason” and not by her own free will is a reflection of his own self loathing and feelings of helplessness being trapped by his own ideals. It’s incredibly sad obviously but I think this story is ultimately a cautionary tale in that regard. Mikasa represents how love in the realest sense doesn’t imply servitude or enslavement, and Eren represents the destructiveness and suffering that comes with believing it does.

To euthanize is to relieve an animal of suffering by peaceful death. Zeke pretty much sees himself as putting the Eldians out of their misery, so I think euthanasia works

While Zeke was growing up, his parents manipulated him to achieve their goals of escaping Eldian oppression and restoring the Eldian Empire (or at least what they thought they knew of it). They didn't spend the time they should have with him as parents, and it resulted in Zeke having to make a difficult choice. Meanwhile, Eren didn't have any of this manipulation, and while under oppression from another source (at least from the island's perspective), he was determined to fight from a young age. Interestingly, Eren didn't have a similar opposing viewpoint like that of Marleyan history for Zeke. Because of this, Eren didn't even know who the "true enemy" was until late in S3. There are some interesting and controversial similarities between them that I won't delve into yet, even though you guys have finished.

I did feel sympathy for Zeke because he had such a sad childhood. I kind of feel like his solution to the problem isn't the right one and that he was manipulated by more than just his parents. Where the scene ends in the episode and we get the mid-card, instead in the original scene Zeke has a reply for his dad He says “Dad…grandpa said if you just hadn’t gone outside the walls…” which stops Grisha in his tracks. He sits back down, gets real quiet and we only see the back of his head as he replies “What did I do wrong? I just wanted to see the airship.”
