.Akira.

What a movie

.Akira.

Comments

For Cannon, I think he’ll be interested in one anime movie called Redline.

Zannen Da

I expected this movie to be a lot better, took me 10 days to finish it.

Conk

That's what I'm saying!

the_ crumbling-cupcake

What a great movie, was definitly waiting for this one. The manga goes even further than the anime btw, the manga has a lot of differences early on but it branches off definitly when Tetsuo actually finds Akira underground, alive. Most of the manga goes much further than the anime, most of it was also made after the anime \. The movie by itself is definitly already amazing and perhaps better on some points. Definitly recommend it if you want more explanations, more character developments, more exposition and just more Akira.

JeanJean

Soooo awesome!!

If you guys loved this movie, Perfect Blue would be a great follow-up. It's of the psychological genre

LupusRex69

What a classic... Peak

T.Yaseen

Akira is literally a cult classic in animation for sure! But I will say the SA scene always gets me. I skip it every time. Unfortunately in a society like this it would definitely be a common occurrence. Just shows how decrepit the world is.

Melly

AOT? I got an idea, Back to Back reaction drops?

Chandler Smith

I ALWAYS thinking about Kanye when it comes to Akira 😅

Melly

I think reading the manga would be far more useful in terms of understanding the lore and plot than rewatching the movie

Kleebo

I’m so happy you guys watched this. I remember being so obsessed by everything about it. The animation, voice acting, the score, just everything. Especially the city shots. And I still get chills when Kaneda and Tetsuo call out for each other before the light of Akira over takes the city. And then from there on it’s just magic. Definitely in my top ten films and I don’t think it will be changing anytime soon.

GreetswithJudgement

Same 😭

Cannon Andrus

demon slayer was like the only anime they had watched a little bit of before starting the channel

kiiturii

Loved carter's face during the baby scene. 🤣

CoLdBITeR

since Carter mentioned it.... But Demon Slayer doesn't have seasons 1 and 2 ): I wanna try watching it for the first time huhu (don't like watching alone loll) uhmmm is it somewhere here?

TY

Castle in the Sky next please!

Emil Bengtsson

My first time watching Akira alongside you all. What an experience of a movie and now so much other media now stands out how Akira influenced they are. Definitely think a second watch is worth it, I can only imagine having watched this back in 1988 and kind of envious of anyone who did.

Vextipher

all I knew about this movie was the slide and akria scene. not what I expected at all. but in a good way

Kyle

Perfect Blue is amazing. Would highly recommend that they watch it at some point. I was fortunate enough to watch it in theaters during a celebration of Satoshi Kon two years ago.

Jose Flores

It might also be an allegory of the atomic bomb. It’s a pretty obvious theme to pick out, but the head scientist looks like Einstein whose theory of relativity was highly related to the development of the atom bomb.

keyton bush

When the girl was talking about evolution around 1:10:00 and the idea of an amoeba with the power of a human, it kind of reminded me of Father in FMAB. The dwarf in the flask had the same destructive passions as human beings and he tried to exalt himself to divinity and consume god. Seems not too dissimilar to Tetsuo.

keyton bush

I understand what you mean about watching it again to fully digest the story. This reaction with you guys is my second watch, and I could follow along and understand way more because the first time, I was absolutely befuddled lmao. It was a total fever dream of an experience because I went into it expecting an anime fast and furious on bikes. The animation will always be incredible, though. At this point, I'm begging for a hand-drawn 2D animation renaissance in film.

Maeverly

I feel like they usually post it later than this, and I dont blame them since its only been a few hours

Meel

Is TLoU being processed for upload right now? Hopefully the Patreon upload isn't broken, if you're not using Streamable, that is.

PEAKira 🗣️

rue

No way. I've been waiting so long for this

Tyler

No way, this is my favorite movie. Idk how I didn’t see the notification. Can’t wait!

Aden

If you like the style of Akira, you’re definitely going to enjoy Perfect Blue. It’s got that same intense vibe and stunning animation, but with a psychological twist that messes with your head in the best way. Totally worth the watch! Many movies like Inception and even Black Swan took cues from this movie.

Chivi Moon 🌙

Man, if you loved this art and cyberpunk style, y'all would really love Cowboy Bebop. It's so good, please give it a go 🙏

ShadowCat

If you do ever watch either show, here's the watch order. FLCL: Watch episodes 1-6. That's it. Neon Genesis Evangelion: Watch episodes 1-26. Watch the End of Evangelion movie. (Technically optional, but HIGHLY recommended:) Evangelion 1.11: You Can (Not) Alone Evangelion 2.22: You Can (Not) Advance Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo Evangelion: 3.0+1.11: Thrice Upon a Time

Gestrid

If you enjoyed animation like this along with a post-apocalyptic setting, you might enjoy Neon Genesis Evangelion. The animation quality isn't quite as good as Akira, but only because it's a TV series and not a movie. But it's still created by one of the greatest anime studios of all time, Gainax, and one of the most well-known anime directors of all time, Hideaki Anno. Another show by Gainax (but not by Hideaki Anno, although he was an animator on the project) is FLCL (pronounced "Fooly Cooly"). It's another show that's known as a bit of a cult classic. Many of Gainax's shows and films are cult classics, but those two shows in particular stand head-and-shoulders above the rest. Neon Genesis Evangelion in particular also got a brand new dub when it came to Netflix a few years ago.

Gestrid

Heard this movie was goated way back. A bike in Cyberpunk was inspired by Akira. Haven't seen the movie myself yet and glad to have been given a reason to. Sidenote, Grave of the Fireflies is def a shareable movie. It is a humbling experience. Multiple, frequent rewatches might be a bit much, but I don't see once in a while being a problem

Acebes

I would confidently say this is the most influential and iconic anime movie ever (and honestly, probably just one of the most influential films in general). Artistically, it's a masterpiece: incredibly technical, with each frame being hand-drawn and highly detailed, giving it such fluidity and realism. But what really stands out to me is the masterful use of color and lighting. Fun fact: they used 327 colors for this film, and 50 of those were invented specifically during the animation process. There’s so much more cool stuff and detail in this movie, and I haven’t even mentioned the actual story, characters, or philosophical themes. But there are countless YouTube videos and articles out there that dive into all of that far better than I could. However, there is one documentary I highly recommend checking out, it's a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film, and it’s really interesting and educational. Called Akira Production report https://youtu.be/YcY248hbwwU?si=PlUZqh9o1ccJgw1b

Enma

It's been SO LONG since I watched this movie. It such an amazing experience, and it gives you so much to think about. It's been incredibly influential, not just on anime but even on western movies. And there's so much that you can discuss, that isn't obvious. For example, I don't think Tetsuo didn't really want to kill Kaneda. In fact, the first time at the stadium when Kaneda is almost crushed, was it really one of the kids who protected him, or was it Tetsuo? Anime used to be both more experimental and weird, both the projects with more budget meant for cinema like this, but even the made for TV and direct to video. There was a lot less anime back then too, and it had even more of an otaku/obscure interest stamp than nowadays (while manga has always been more mainstream). Speaking of which this is just a part of the story, it's adapted from a longer manga (as others have already said).

it is tomorrow

S Moonchild

You guys should think about what Akira meant to the world at the time of its release, and what is its significance today. There are so many mind blowing circumstances surrounding it. The production, the technology, the process, the reception, the manga, all within the context of that time in Japan... It is also fascinating to learn who the key figures that worked on its animation were and what they went to work on and create afterwards. Researching the background of everything related to this project is a treasure trove for anyone that loves anime. Akira is largely responsible for how massively popular anime is today all over the world.

I thought this movie was just about motorcycles.. 😭

NMP

Last comment before I actually start watching but you guys should also look up the “Akira bike Slide”, it’s one of the most iconic shots in movie history and has been copied/referenced by quite a few literally hundreds of of movies/shows

NMP

dawg I am unbelievably hype we are here right now. this is studio gek history right here !!

Forth Wanderer

This is one of those movies where i watch certain shots and cant help but be mindblown that it was animated by hand frame by frame

NMP

If you guys want a good laugh you should rewatch the music video for Stronger by Kanye West after seeing this movie

NMP

The movie has like two or three English dubs, that's why the scene you guys were rewatching at the end sounded different

Denzel Mwandha

😭😭😭

Cannon Andrus

I second that the manga is just such a complete story, the movie is really good but I would say its almost promotion for the manga

Forth Wanderer

The city glaze is legit. It’s such a beastly character in itself. Perfect Blue would be a great one. Or just do a vintage anime run.

GreetswithJudgement

OMG WTF

NMP

Shiiiiiiiit, watching Akira without the guy that glazes Naruto.

Zannen Da

Oh yea, Akira is essential to understand Japanese animation, but a lot of scenes inspired many American action movies too! As a kid I was just as disgusted as obsessed with it.

Sari-chan

Cannon, that kind of reaction to booba in real life might not go so well. 😂💀👌 I dont think Ive ever wanted Patreon to have a built in gif player as much as that time LMAO. That face was as memeable as you can get

Mysterious Figure

The manga is actually even more insane than the movie

@Studio Gek You guys should watch "look back" by Fujimoto (the one who made chainsaw man). Its a complete beautiful story in ONLY 1 hour, and came out last year. Easily the movie of the year, 10/10 for me.

Jonas Teigen

OH NO WAY. MASSIVE W

Mia Malvik

my first thought when that girl got crushed in that big guts stuff

Yara

i am confusion.

Yara

Thanks for a great drop! I’m a big anime fan but somehow I was avoiding watching Akira as I, when I was a kid, was bit traumatised watching a scene Testuo exploding. Great animation and story!

H

i remember the first time i watched Akira i was so awed and confused at the same time. i felt like i was thrown directly in a world i didn't know and spit back out as quickly with a lot of questions unanswered and left to interepretation, kinda like the inception ending. some parts of it felt like something beyond my comprehension especially the akira parts, while others like Kaneda and Tetsuo's dynamics so relatable. Iconic red bike scenes and the visuals and cyberpunk world building were exquisite. what makes this movie also so well done is the lack of exposition, you're in this world and you better keep up because no one is gonna explain to you this Neo Tokyo future. I was also the same as Cannon, the poster made me think i was gonna watch a bike gang/government politics so i was a bit thrown off by the supernatural aspects of it. Now that rewatched it a couple more times, it still feels like its living in my mind rent free and definitely in my list of favorite sci-fis

Yara

curse you streamable

kuza

I’ve been meaning to watch this movie for more than a decade! Had it on Blu-ray, lost it when i moved and just forgot about it so i’m super excited to finally watch it!
