Late to the party but as I wait fror the drop let me yap 😈 Here's why I think this show gets so much hate, or at least why I joined in (bear with me): (2016-17) Everyone that I heard watched it loved it, great pacing, hype, top tier animation and unique style. THE new gen shounen. I don't remember watching anything else besides this and AOT s2. Some hate stems from this show is more likely to be associated with children because of the style/saturated colors and 'typical shonen' energy. For some reason watching cartoons is off limits now 🤔 MHA did start breeding some... s t r a n g e fans, mostly because of ships, cosplays, headcanons and original characters. I can't even blame it on middle schoolers, because I mostly see adults doing this. I do think this is at least a testament to how immersive Horikoshi's character design, relationships, and world building are. (2019) new season drops in the fall, still cooking but i heard less abt it not sure why (maybe bc this one aired in the fall when the others were spring/early summer? idk) i remember i dropped it for a bit because the simuldub fell a week behind for the holidays and i didnt want contextual spoilers from classmates pacing slowed just A BIT from the norm (maybe 3-4 eps), but sitting at home bored and not being fed peak isn't fun 💀 i can say for sure i actually did drop it fr for abt 2 years (🤡) and im sure this happened to a lot of fans/viewers as well. (2020) The Internet does its magic. TikTok. People have nothing to do. Everytime someone stumbles upon a weird anime post, it probably has to do with MHA. Now your page is flooding with content making you want to drink bleach. You want nothing to do with that weird cringy show and Twitter has to know too. Because you can't watch a show unless the fanbase are angels, and they should have direct influence on how you view a show. Random who is scrolling Twitter sees post, hasn't watched MHA or seen/heard of it for a year or two, and is swayed. "That's why I haven't heard of it for so long, must've fell off" or "Ew, I want nothing to do with that." (2021 or 22?) I started hearing how it "fell off". I do know know that it was really because of one arc many weekly watchers had a hard time enjoying, and another arc was "poorly done" (i believe rearranging manga events and budgeting issues, correct me if im wrong) It doesnt look good if the fans are turning on a show (even if unfairly) and the only fans you see are uhm... I am ashamed to say I slowly joined the bandwagon of "My Mid/Mid Hero Academia", (also saw a character design that irritated me so that didnt help) until i remembered that this show was massive for me (and my art) in HS when i first watched. I gave it another chance, finished that season (i was literally an episode away from peak 😂), and made the decision to never listen to the internet's opinion ever again. Binged s5+6, rewatched it with my brother before 7 aired and we watched the dub weekly, cooked so hard we had to jump ahead to a sub episode while the show was on hiatus 😭. Also it seems newer anime viewers tend to have this weird perception of what anime should be ??? Like going into a show that's popular and needing every aspect to be tailored to your tastes, or they watch AOT and go, "... it's not AOT tho" idk who was comparing these very different shows. If it's worth a watch, then let's just enjoy it for what it is 🙂 Top ten for me rn. "It's the fanbase" "I heard it was mid" "Well I watched up to s3 when it was good but ..." "But AO-" Refuse to tolerate the slander again, no valid opinion unless you're caught up. I'm very excited to see the reactions going forward! (Feel like I wrote my whole life story sheesh)

MHA does an amazing job of worlbuilding through the power system. I love how quriks shape every facet of society. From them being jobs, to regulations, to schools, quirk marriages, other professions becoming easier or completely being erased by their existence and a lot more. Horikoshi really thought out this aspect.

Just to clear something up. People like Tokoyami wich have animalistic or otherwise non-human characteristics that they can not turn off are called heteromorphs. Their quirk factor changed their body, it is not something they can activate. For example, Monoma the copy guy, can not copy Shoji's quirk(the guy with many arms). Aizawa also can not turn off heteromorphic quriks. You will learn a lot more about this later. Also Monoma can only copy and use one quirk at a time and he can not copy One for All for 2 reasons. The first is because his body can not handle it and the second is a spoiler.

Horikoshi is just so goated that he perfectly encapsulates how she would look in extreme lighting and people hated him for it. For the character HE created.

I'm glad that you guys like this show but the reason it's 'overhated' is: 1. The Fandom - it's probably the worst, cringiest fandom in the anime community. Not that it doesn't have normal people but sadly, the loudest and most known ones acted in a way that caused the whole anime community to cringe from secondhand embarrassment. It also deters all the newcomers because the only thing they know about this show is the fandom. 2. Overhype. When it first came out, people called it the "NEW BIG 3". I remember people putting it on par with some goats. Idk why people overhype this show soo bad during it's initial airing, but when people actually started the show later, it didn't meet the high standards. So in some years it went from the most overhyped show to the most hated one. 3. This reeason is related to some things of the story. I'm not gonna spoil and there is no clear plot point that could be called diabolical or smth like with game of thrones. BUT there are many things that many viewers simply dislike. For example, I call myself a hater because some things really disappointed me as a person who watched this show, hearing the high praises. Maybe if you guys came into this show as an "overhyped" one, you wouldn't like it either. It all comes down to expectations. Many people hating in the comments seemed to have the opposite effect on you lmao because your standards were too low.

Yeah, the shipping culture around shounen anime can be sooo toxic. I personally love shipping characters if I feel that they have chemistry (satosugu as an example, since you mentioned it LOL) There's absolutely nothing wrong with shipping as long as it's done in moderation and you aren't an absolute psycho about it- But a ton of shippers are indeed absolute psychos about it, and in turn they end up giving the show and fanbase a bad name. It's super unfortunate.

MHA is one of my favourite shows, even if it slows down and it seems ridiculous (second half of s4) everything has a meaning and some people love the second half of s4. But I swear those moments will be worth it in the end, it will pay off! THE only "weaker" season is s5 and it is still amazing, especially the last few episodes. S6 and 7 are literally peak non stop.

Hes definitely a really fun one to follow and this is a surprise cuz I hate copy power type characters LMAO, they are usually kinda boring. I dont hate MHA but imo the later seasons from s5 -> s7 (+ the end cuz I read the manga) had indeed been a chore to watch, so if I have to rate this series as a whole, its honestly a solid 6.5-7. Overall, I do have some problems with some of the writing decisions but its a relatively good watch/read.

After reading through the comments on these MHA reactions, this is actually my first time hearing about the show’s toxic shipping fanbase. I was an early fan watching the episodes weekly, but I fell off in the back half of Season 3 since there was such a huge tonal shift after the PEAK I had just witnessed in the arc prior lol. I figured I’d pick the show back up when I heard it got good again, but for years I saw a lot of people complaining about the show’s pacing and criticizing the mangaka’s story decisions. Also saw the term “Mid Hero Academia” and “boring” being thrown around. That kind of kept me away until now. Not because I hated the show, but because the vibe around it appeared negative. I recently heard the last season was pretty amazing though so I’m glad I can tap back in and see what I missed. A little late to the discussion lol but wanted to offer that perspective since I’ve seen a lot more talk around the toxic fanbase being the reason for the hate than of the show itself.

I agree with Carter, the side characters are done justice in this show, which I love. It's different from many animes I've seen. It makes me truly appreciate the side characters. Also, pacing so far is excellent!!👌 I don't even feel the time passing by. The show loves getting straight to business without too much stalling, it's nice to see.

Personally, Bakugo, Todoroki, Aizawa sensei, Endeavor, Midoriya and Shigaraki all make it into my top 10 favorite characters on the anime (with Bakugo at the very top), so I’ve always really liked it. I do remember feeling like some episodes in later seasons kept me from the plotlines/characters I really cared about or that some plotlines went on for too long, so they felt like a bit of a drag on a weekly release basis. But after you guys binged season 1, I binged the rest of the seasons and caught up to season 7, which I hadn’t yet watched. I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed the anime this time around. Even finished the manga while I was at it and I’m having a rewatch through other reactioners’ season 6 and 7. The anime is awesome. And keep investing stocks in Bakugo, Cannon!

The problem of the weird fanbase stems from the fact that the majority of the show is male-dominated as is with every typical shounen (demon slayer, jjk, hxh, haikyuu). Obviously these shows are catered towards teenage boys so the cast should be something that audience will like. But when people outside of that audience watch the show they want something other than just the action aka romance lol. So when mangaka’s have characters that are meant to be seen as rivals/childhood friends and have scenes concentrated on those relationships, those fans will take it as undertones for romance. And there’s nothing wrong with shipping (i hate to admit this but i’ve liked multiple edits of Gojo and Geto 😭) but some fans took it to an obsessive point especially because the mangaka kept writing about that relationship. It happens with every shounen i don’t see why it needs to cloud such an amazing show :)

Movie 2 does NOT take place after movie 3... The problem with the movie is where it can be placed without ruining continuity. It definitely happens after season 4 but it's awkward to put it anywhere into season 5 to how it's structured. Movie 2 is like a DBZ movie but it's canon. There's more reasons to why movie 2 can't take place after season 5 than the opposite. Most of these are spoilers so the best I can say is try to remember the important outcomes from the first and last arc of season 5. Neither of those things have happened in the movie or they choose to not acknowledge it (which is dumb)

In terms of plot, the show is namely hated for writing decisions that occur later in the series (hated might not be the right word, but that’s basically where lots of split opinions stem from). In terms of fanbase, it isn’t an exceptionally bad one, most fanbases are pretty weird…I think it’s that MHA is one where a lot of their weird actions have gone pretty viral, so unfortunately they have an infamous reputation. Believe it or not, for a long time Deku received so much hate for being a “crybaby mc”. That was mainly from meat-head anime fans, and tbh public opinion on Deku has shifted to mostly positive since then.

MHA is extremely overhated. I already finished the series with the manga. It's a solid 8/10. People just hate it because a good portion of the fanbase is weird and demented. Less than a month ago they were up in arms against the mangaka because he drew a tanned character (future character) with a lighter skin tone. The character is from Okinawa, where a lot of Japanese people have tans because of how predominant the sun is there. These people are probably the same people who commented on your YouTube video that they dislike Uraraka. Shes a GOAT and people just hate her because they want Deku to be attracted to other men. I will say the only thing I hate about MHA that only the anime is a victim of is the 3rd movie. I havent watched it but it messed with season 5's pacing. The anime delayed an arc so people could watch the following arc and be informed for when the movie got released in theaters. However, it ruined the delayed arc because the arc that got pushed ahead needed context so they vaguely SPOILED the delayed arc...

Since you guys are asking about the fanbase, I want to genuinely ask something to all the people here commenting so matter-of-factly on how “weird” it is. Not to make this an essay or anything, but I’m not quite sure what is it about MHA’s fanbase shipping characters amongst each other that makes people think it's the spawn of the devil, when that has has literally ALWAYS been the case for the fanbase of any other anime show ever. The most popular ship in Dragon Ball? Goku and Vegeta. One Piece? Sanji and Zoro. AoT? Freaking Eren and Levi (which I was genuinely confused by when I first found out about it lmao). And let me not even start on Naruto and Sasuke because it is borderline meme material, they are kind of the blueprint in a way lol. Hell, even the most popular ship in Harry Potter is Draco and Harry 😭 What I am saying is that shipping has always been part of any fanbase as long as fanbases have existed, so I don't understand what makes MHA's fanbase any worse than the others for having the exact same elements. Personally I think it might be cause MHA as a show is more recent so the majority of the people that watched the shows I mentioned above did so as they were kids when they did not have access to fandom spaces the way they do now. I sure as hell wasn't on twitter/x when first watching Dragon Ball or Naruto, I was a kid watching on TV, completely untainted by fandom experiences. Also because MHA was coming out in real time so you couldn't just binge watch the whole thing from beginning to end without ever coming across the fanbase during those yearly breaks between seasons. Basically what I am saying is: I have seen plenty of fanbases, and they are ALL THE SAME. Literally every single one of them. People will always ship characters, they always have and it will forever happen, and I think it's ridiculous to get all scandalized by that when it comes to MHA because how does whatever a random account on twitter does in their free time affect my viewing experience or YOUR viewing experience??? In all my years watching shows, I have simply never engaged with the parts of a fandom that were clearly not meant for me specifically. It really is as simple as that. Ok end of rant lol. So canonically, movie 3 actually happens sometime in the middle of S5, while movie 2 actually happens after S5's ending, even though the studio released the two movies in the opposite order. OR, y'all can watch movie 2 after S5 Ep12, and movie 3 after S5 ends (this is what most reactors do if I'm not wrong, cause there are spoilers in movie 2 that aren't revealed until the middle of S5).

He's such a goofy guy but his lessons always somehow make people feel better about themselves, specifically Izuku. ok so the whole thing with the mha dilemma is mostly how the fanbase slowly transitioned into a weirder (perverse) side of the internet. Leaving the cringey-ness aside, a lot of the fandom are teenagers who have taken things too far or have zero etiquette with others or the author. Like other comments have said, these supposed fans would send their opinions, death threats, and headcannon ships to the author in order to influence how the story developed. Also, as a person who watched it weekly since the first episode, the show starts to get boring and repetitive after I think season 3 or 4 ( I don't remember its a long time since I dropped it) plus the weird ass fandom didn't really help in my declining opinion of the show. Its now mostly known as the show for pdf files(those who strongly ship UA students with adults), wierdos who take things to far (making mha their entire personality), and the show's repetitiveness or annoying plot armor.

I honestly can't recall any lows or truly boring arcs in mha and I've rewatched many times. There are some that rank lower for me than others obviously as there would be with any show (e.g. very start of season 5) but none are bad in my opinion. I never had to skip through any. It is definitely overhated by people who just jump on the bandwagon or have not seen it at all. And I never got the 'it sucks caus the fandom sucks' excuse. But each to their own.

I don't think anyone here would willingly admit that first of all, but secondly, just because you don't engage in something doesn't mean it doesn't exist or that it's not a problem. Unfortunately the weirder/ more extreme something is the more attention it will garner, and outsiders unfamiliar with the anime will see these weird sides and form an opinion about the anime surrounding them. You see this trend every where from people judging a religion from a small group of extremists or people saying vaccines don't work because they saw a post saying it gives people autism. I personally love MHA but I can see why that side of the fandom causes people to hate, it just comes from a place of not wanting to do research for yourself.

People have touched on the fanbase, I think it’s also the ‘campiness’ for lack of a better term. A lot of MHA is very simple and sincere. It’s not trying to be Attack on Titan, for instance. It’s heartwarming, uplifting, leans into the emotions etc. I think some people find that to be corny and so they hate on it. Other than that, some people criticized the writing, but people did that for Attack on Titan too. I think it’s a very well done show. I like the narrative structure, the themes, and the morals of the show. Plus it has a fantastic soundtrack.

One thing to keep in mind with a lot of well-known shows (like My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer, and many other shows) is that the people that like it and people that hate it *both* increase. So you're more likely to hear about people disliking a show if it's a really good show. In MHA's case, it's not that it's divisive. It's that the loud minority is bigger than it is for most other shows because the amount of people that have watched it is larger.
