But, maybe he does have a plan or maybe he's just been so jaded and warped by all that's happened. Levi having to kill his allies again was devastating. The Gabi killed Sasha reveal to Nico and Sasha's dad was crazy and sad. I can't wait for the next batch!

This was a major turning point for the usage of chemical weapons in war. I feel like the scene was clearly inspired by real events, and the world of AoT is at a similar technological level to our world around WWI as well.

For Zeke, it’s denying them life altogether. And tragically, Eren takes it even further—he thinks freedom means burning the forest down, unaware that he’s just feeding the flames. Mr. Braus’s speech is the moral core of the story, a quiet but seismic rejection of every ‘necessary evil’ justification we’ve heard. It’s no coincidence that his words come right as Gabi—a child weaponized by war—finally breaks down in his arms. The moment feels like the story itself pleading: ‘Someone, stop this.’

I think from season 1-3 the story carries the characters with us basically finding out the truth to things when our characters do. But season 4 onwards Eren actually becomes the main character and is moving us, the story and the other chararcters along to his will. Loved the discussion at the end too!

An insane, easily missable detail of this batch is how Levi's story progresses as he is shown to have regrets about saving Eren, which is a big no-no in his line of work. Doubts got him cooked quite literally in the next episode.

2025-05-10 10:44:14 +0000 UTCI love how they continued Sasha’s story/development/arc through other characters like Nicolo, Gabi and her family, especially her father. Sasha did not have much development. She was just the fun, wholesome character everyone loved because she brought light to a dark world. But through these other characters you can see why she was lovable and why she was important. Her story progresses on and I honestly like her character better for it. I couldn’t connect with her until she died and I find that to be interesting and intentional. Also everyone is always on about how similar Gabi and Eren are but I find Gabi and Sasha being opposites/parallels a far more interesting topic. Gabi shooting Sasha, sends a message that when we act in violence we kill a part of ourselves too. But Sasha not shooting Gabi sends an even bigger message. Good still exists in humanity representing her father and what he was standing for by not killing Gabi on his daughter’s behalf.

It’s probably not meant to be perceived this way but I absolutely love how in that scene, they all hurt each other, just proving the cycle of violence further. Eren hurts Mikasa, Armin goes to hurt Eren, Mikasa then hurts Armin, Armin hurts Eren, Mikasa hurts Armin again by being passive while Eren is hurting Armin. Then it ends with Armin hurting Eren. It just keeps going through dialogue and action.

We barely saw Nicolo and Sasha together but just through his words you can tell how much he loved her. It's just so heartbreaking and makes me miss our beloved potato girl all over again.

2025-05-10 07:16:53 +0000 UTC@TheSauceGuy Yeah, I do believe Eldian is more akin to an ethnicity/race, whereas Marleyan may be a ethicity/nationality, and 'Paradisians' (or however you'd say it, lol) is more so just a nationality - but at the same time though Gabi and Falco would be considered Marleyan in terms of nationality to us, the divide between Eldians and Marley is so strong that even being able to claim 'honorary Marleyan' is something they have to earn, not something they're born with. They don't really have natural/acknowledged rights to citizenship despite the land they were born and raised on, so I don't think saying it either way is entirely wrong

Floch's character development is one of many reasons that I wish we had more material covering the time between S3 and the start of S4. S4 just crams in as much as it possibly can, but I feel like the most complex and arguably most important part of the show should be longer.

It’s something you CHOOSE to pick up and is also something that you can make the choice to put down. Sasha chose to shoot the Marleyan soldiers as retaliation for Paradis. In turn, Gabi picked up the rifle to avenge her home and killed Sasha. Out of grief over losing Sasha, Niccolo picks up the knife to exact revenge on Gabi and offers it to Mr. Blaus. However, Sasha’s father doesn’t want to continue the cycle of hatred so when the knife came into his hands, his wisdom helps him make the deliberate choice to put it down. The entire episode shows that the cycle of hatred is something that is spurred on by choice. If an adult makes the decision to put the knife down and break the cycle, communication and peace, however slim, become possibilities. In a way Eren’s “If you don’t fight, you can’t win” and Armin’s “Those who can’t sacrifice anything, can’t change anything” philosophies both apply here. As long as someone at the very least tries, however futile or minuscule the effort may seem, the chance for a changed outcome will continue to stand. On the other hand, if neither side can step forward and make the first attempt at communication, at diplomacy and open dialogue, the possibility for peace will remain exactly as it was: nonexistent. The knife that was finally put down, is immediately picked up again in an act of violence because a child has a much easier time understanding her hurt feelings from her loss, over the consequences of her actions. That’s why it’s the responsibility of adults to make sure children won’t have to find themselves in situations where they feel as though they need to pick up a knife, and to teach them that even if they are presented with one, picking it up would be a fruitless endeavor that ultimately does more harm than good. Other related callbacks: Mikasa’s first act of violence was also her and Eren picking up a knife to take human lives. Uri and Kenny’s friendship became a possibility only because of Uri’s unexpected gesture of humility and accountability in the face of Kenny’s violence and aggression. He had Kenny’s knife and life literally in the palm of his hand and could have transformed again at any time but he instead lowered himself before the guy who was ready to put a bullet in his face, and apologized. Two great scenes, one that violently depicted the loss of innocence and tragedy of a knife picked up, while the other highlighted the impact of a knife willingly set aside, as well as the hope and beauty that can follow it.

The Nicolo arc is definitely one of my favorites, the slow build up and tension in the restaurant especially since his eyes and expressions change and Falco’s panic and Gabi’s ignorance and just the full circle of everyone being there at the same time and then of course Kaya’s turnaround too all leaded up to Eden’s scene with Mikasa and Armin. Truly goated episode, so nuanced and just keeps you on your toes the whole time!

They may be treated as second-class citizens, but they are still Marleyan citizens; they have lived there for the entirety of their lives. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but being an Eldian is more of a race thing, as the "Eldian Empire" is essentially gone, with few on the island even knowing of their history until recently.

People process things in different ways, and laughing at an absurd or futile situation is shown to be a form of coping mechanism for Eren. While I certainly dislike some aspects of S4, I appreciate Eren laughing in that scene, and I also appreciate Connie not understanding/misinterpreting it.
