Connecting icons (step-by-step)

Already posted the timelapse of the process of this icon commission, but I have tried to focus on improving my use of light and shadow in art lately so I wanted to share these notes with you all! You can get a pretty good grasp of how I made the background in the video, so I focused on the shadows and light in this step-by-step.

This is just my personal thought process when it comes to shading and I bet some more effective ways exist out there, but I hope this little step by step will come in handy. ^^ Please feel free to let me know down in the comments if you have any questions regarding any step!

Bonus notes on planning your light conditions:

I often plan the light source to bring out the form! It's important to know the rules before breaking them, but as you get more comfortable with it you can start strategically placing your shadows and light to bring focus to areas that you want the viewer to focus on. My work is often very character-heavy so that is usually the figure's face. In these icons, you can notice how the characters' faces are surrounded by large areas of solid shadow, while the face in contrast has more detailed in terms of shaded areas.
