I have noticed in listening to the first few audiobooks that there is a lot of… ‘staring’ going on. A lot. So much. Like, every single interaction has a ‘staring’ moment.

Erin was the first. I don’t remember the chapter or even the volume, but the first time the Blighted King ordered the spell cast was an experiment that was assumed failed because the hero from another world didn’t arrive in Rhir. The second casting was for 1,000 heroes, which called for the sacrifice of 10,000 unborn children, and that is when the ‘first wave’ arrived. This is later confirmed in the early chapters of volume 8 when Kasigna traps Erin in the land of the dead and asks why she was worthy of being the first champion summoned from another world.

"She was lonely. But she was no longer alone." I don't get it. Does this mean that Erin was actually the first Earther to arrive? I thought there was a first wave with the Americans and people like Erin and Ryoka as an after-effect, that trickled in over time in non-Rhir locations (plus Flora). [as some later-term babies must have managed to cling to life a bit longer before being consumed... or possibly the ritual fueling itself magical plague style targeted at Rhir's citizenry, that's been spreading to the last victims over time] Now Erin arrived before the American group and the day-long ritual had continuous effect, as well as the after-effects months later? Or did Erin's arrival have nothing to do with the ritual?

I liked the mystery of the various waves of humans and not knowing what the heck was going on. It’s hard to be objective about rewrites, it seems impossibly difficult to do. Perhaps the story changes dramatically now and she fixes pasta for the whole goblin tribe instead? Happy vacay Pirateaba!
