It's also for those that have personal expiriance so that they are prepared and can chose to not read it if they want.

Håvard

@Trevor Its works like mana reinforcing and stretching the body and not a fundamental change to the physical structure of the body itself. Just like a Mage casting [Lions Strength]. A [Skill] is basically a [Spell] that is engraved in into the world's [Akashic Records] and can be granted to the appropriate class on level up.

lenkite

Hopefully they will be smart enough to ask Geneva about her preferences. The main thing she needs right now is choice

Alan McBrayer

I think her class might be effecting how she is acting. Forcing her to to think of the human wounds caused by gunpowder instead of the way it can be used to save the adventuring team. It could very well be the reason why she is pushing herself so hard.

Alan McBrayer

Well Erin's reinforced structure skill was permanent until she actively turned it off. I'm guessing the flexibility skill works the same way.

Alan McBrayer

Yeah, I mean punish the girl who has been working herself to the bone trying to save people for not being fun and pleasant enough. She deserves to suffer for not smiling more.

Flamie

She's an interoverted workaholic who has seen months of incredible suffering and more than most doctors in warzones deal with. That a lot of readers go "I don't like her she's a narcisist" is flat out terrifying to me and just shows how people who don't manage to be perfectly pleasant at all times even if they are at the point of mental breakdown get thrown under the bus.

Flamie

Right? The worst part for me is that I had been cheering for Okasha for a while in a "make her take care of herself" sense and then immediately saw the horrible results of her getting used to just apply force.

Flamie

I think she is way too pig headed but on the other hand she has been pretty much overworked ever since she got into that world. "normal" standards of reasonable behavior really can't be expected. If only being unreasonable about that is the only result of her insane situation that is still pretty well kept together for someone so entitled to a complete mental breakdown.

Flamie

It somehow got to me and I'm reading some screwed up stuff. I think because it cleverly tricked me into cheering for Okasha at first. The good doctor really did work herself to death and she really did make Okasha work herself into an exhausted madness. So I was all "yes just make her sleep" not really thinking what that means .The result was in right away. The next day "negotiating" for sleep after 14 hours and 4 Okasha hours already made it very clear how that had not been a negotiation at all. And it went downhill from there incredibly quickly. I got how Okasha got driven to the point but I also absolutely don't see a way to come back from it. And somehow it doesn't seem to get better.

Flamie

Actually, if she sets up a business arrangement with the Selphids to “pilot” her body, Geneva would probably be better off also having a selphid in her while she sleeps. Being a paraplegic means she has no voluntary bladder and bowel control, so having a selphid keep an eye on those functions would at the very least help things from getting messy.

Luca

Wasn't nearly as disturbing as I thought it would be. Warning is for those faint of heart. If you've read any Anne Rice or Stephen King, then this won't bother you at all.

Dikfor

Yes, I know she is a paraplegic. She still needs to sleep. The piloting Selphid can do their thing in a corpse while she is asleep. She should probably have a paid business arrangement with one or two Selphid instead of this current nonsense. Lots of physically challenged folks pay medical assistants for their help.

lenkite

You do realize Geneva's pretty much a corpse without a sylphid. Without Okasha's intervention, Geneva would have died. Without a sylphid inhabiting her, she's paralyzed.

Dikfor

Getting a bit ...tired of the months? Without A or even B plot progression. It feels like its been nothing but side narratives for quite a while, even the chapter with the inn didn’t feel like it went anywhere.

Docnox

We see Okasha break in this chapter. Geneva was doing to okasha what was done to her basically, with the thinking room skill

Scruffleupagas

@Hursha Okasha had made a pledge (much earlier) that she felt as strongly about control as Geneva did about violence.

lenkite

No, Okasha had full autonomy to go have sexual fun in a corpse. Just like Jelaqua does. She just decided she wanted Geneva's living body to do all the 'fun' things she wants to do. It's Geneva's body - she can decide to be a workaholic if she wants to be one.

lenkite

Erin is fun, exciting, and growing as a person. She deserves cool skills. Geneva is a cranky workaholic with a nasty RBF. She deserves skills like, resistance to listening to others and Aura of the automata.

Dikfor

I kinda got the feeling that Okasha was just trying to help out an overworked Dr. and went a little overboard. You gotta remember, before merging with Geneva, Okasha had full autonomy of her own life. It's a crap situation. She's stuck with a crazy workaholic who doesn't want to have any fun. She's constantly keeping the body in working condition while Geneva abuses it constantly. She wasn't given much of a chance to live a fulfilling life any longer. A few hours of supervised play a week is not an even trade. I can't blame her for rebelling against Geneva's self destructive dictatorship. Geneva is an uncompromising antagonistic idealist. Maybe I'm reading into it too much, but I think the world transfer cracked her mind and the paralysis shattered what remained of her psyche. Her unyielding focus on medicine is her way of ignoring the strangeness and horrors of her new environment. It's her security blanket and her emotional crutch.

Dikfor

could be just code phrases for specific tactics so as to reduce the possibility of spies. Not a new concept for things involving strategies or even sports plays. I think all it means to us is this obvious interpretations. I mean all he has to do is ask the gentlemen to see if she has a magic chess set. They could ask anyone in the inn that and no one would even bat an eye.

A disgruntled nondescript squirrel

I like the comparison someone else made with inn and empire skills. If while erin is on an trip and some innkeeper where to wnter and take her inn. How long who'd it take for Erins inn skills to fail? In what maner does the how of how the innkeeper stole the i inn affect Erins skills.

Håvard

Perhaps those are moves he is going to make in the next match against Erin? So the Gentlemen have to go upstairs and check if she is in fact the one playing against the Titan (since he knows several players of lesser skill have had a go at the board in the past)

Luca

On a lighter note, what does Niers’ message mean with “Code as follows for chess board. Knight to E6, Pawn to A1…“? Some kind of double authentication using Erin’s telechess set?

Gyoshi _

Geneva watching on in horror as her Level 32 [Blademaster] body is ripping people apart... I am not looking forward to this getting worse before it gets better. Thank you for the thought-provoking chapter.

Gyoshi _

As Joshua Flowers mentions upthread, Geneva being a control freak would mean that, from her POV, the whole gunpowder issue is something that she has no control over. Of course, instead of engaging in dialogue to influence the direction in which further gunpowder development goes by getting Paige and Daly to agree on compromises, limitations, contingencies, etc; she instead slams her fists on the table and storms off, thus cementing her complete lack of influence in the matter

Luca

It’s a skill that affects the host, similar to the Empire and Inn type skills

Gyoshi _

I wonder if the Sephilids and her are going to set up a rotation to prevent corruption or if the Minds are going to just use Sephilids until the point they show cracks and replace them.

Joshua Flowers

Yeah, her interactions with the UN have shown her to be a major control freak that still can't seem to fully trust them in medical or, more blatantly, military matters despite several months of working together in high stress situations.

Joshua Flowers

That said I can’t get enough of this series. I wish you could hire someone to type for you so you could dictate and push this out faster.

SaintMaceToTheFace

Great chapter but man alive she is insufferable about the Gun powder issue. And great characters are complex and she is! But lord she needs to GET A GRIP.

SaintMaceToTheFace

yeah but the skill changes the way her body works. If a blacksmith uses metal to make a sword the sword is still a sword after it is made even when used by a warrior. I am wondering since it is a permanernt skill will the change be permanent like shaping iron or an enchantment that wares off or finalling a buff that is short term. At this point it is ill defined as there have been no explanations. Another example is the body shaping skills of that martial artist running girl. If she lost her class would she change immediately back to having heavy muscles or would she remain lithe (I really hope she doesn't have the equivalent of magical anorexia )

A disgruntled nondescript squirrel

I think those were Okasha's skills, so without her Geneva doesn't have them anymore.

Parker Groseclose

What Oath did Okasha make?

Hursha

one more thing. Its a question of skill permanence. Did the changes okasha made to geneva become permanent changes like the enhanced flexibility restructuring her body or were they temp changes like buffs. I just want to clarify as that would be a huge factor if those permanent skills granted by multiple syl started to build up.

A disgruntled nondescript squirrel

Why was okasha getting a [host] skill? Shouldn’t that be Geneva’s skill? Maybe it’s just how okasha sees herself?

Mike Murphy

That doesn't really make sense though. Okasha could hide as Geneva because she has lived in her body for so long. Idis has no chance of being able to pull that off.

Hursha

it really seems like Geneva should get a class or (rare skill )to resist body jacking by the fact that she is on her second body squid and getting a class seems to have several factors including heightened emotions and effort. I mean she was almost raped and she was fighting it the whole time. She did not submit to the control nor did her will weaken. Heck Erin gets a skill whenever she stubs her toe, lol.

A disgruntled nondescript squirrel

Warning applies

Imp

Or 3. She's now realized that actually sharing a body with any selphids is a dream and any control she has is at the selphids discretion

Curtis Miller

I think it would be more of a God complex rather than a Hero syndrome (at least looking at the definitions on wikipedia). In any case, it is actually undercutting her ability to achieve her goals, namely to get the Yellow Rivers epidemic under control and be able to treat more patients. A few examples: - using the concepts of modern medicine (statistics, exponential growth of infections, calling it the Yellow Rivers virus/bacteria) when trying to get the Wandering Inn Worlders to act, instead of keeping the message simple in terms that can be understood by laypeople. If they are confused about what Geneva is saying, there’s less chance of them agreeing with what she wants. - centralising everything to her person, as in she is the ONLY ONE who can do anything right/properly/etc. We see this when Geneva rushes up to the secure room to yell at Paige who is working on the samples recovered from Dev. She not only reveals her lack of trust in Paige being able to handle the potential bio-hazard, but breaks their own containment protocols. Also, she insists that she has to keep working at the clinic because she is the only doctor, but makes almost no serious efforts (that we see) to recruit and train more nurses and doctors, which in the long run woul mean being able to treat more people. - tunnel vision in dealing with the epidemic and her patients, in that she should know better and realise that in order to get ahead of Yellow Rivers you need a network of people. You cannot do everything as a single individual as she keeps obstinately doing: you require front line staff (like she is at the clinic) but also people responsible for disseminating information about the disease (steps on how to contain it, avoiding the use of healing potions, etc… why are the Bushrangers not issued with information pamphlets to distribute as they move around, for example?) and coordinate with authorities to take the necessary steps at the city and local area level. We see how the meeting with Fezimet goes. Perhaps someone with a better people skills might have been able to explain WHY steps to curtail the movement of people are necessary, instead of just demanding that they be taken. Last point concerning her tunnel vision, are the Healing Crystals: at the meeting with the Healers she is furious when they are brought up since, according to her there is only HER way of treating the disease… and we learn later in the chapter that the crystals are actually beneficial. This really smacks of “I come from an Earth Medical school so I know everything and everybody else is wasting my time peddling their ideas”.

Luca

Feel a body snatchers movie vibe from this chapter. Also feel like this disease came about because of Geneva's doctor class.

NinjaChicken

I wouldn't call her a narcissistic. Its more like a hero complex, the desire to help others by using whatever she has. A narcissist would not be literally working herself to death trying to keep her patients alive. Everyone calls her the Last Light, a hero, so she feels like she has to be working 24/7 in order to justify the look of awe that people give her.

Parker Groseclose

Maybe add a [Horror] tag to this one. Didn't enjoy this one. So much for Okasha's [Oath] being as strong as Geneva. Geneva would die for her [Oath]. Okasha would break her [Oath] for some [Fun].

lenkite

Seems like people can't be bothered to look out for the symptoms or observe proper health practices because they don't consider it a pandemic. The public and people in charge just don't care enough to do anything as there's only been a handful of deaths and unless read into the reports the current consensus is that it's just another STD. It'll take either decisive action or drastic consequence to see people recognize the threat. I mean, sure, if an entire ship of Yellow River disease showed up they'd dowse it in fire, but it seems plausible that cramped quarters with carriers not showing obvious symptoms are likely to infect a few others.

Joshua Flowers

Good chapter, good writing, but maybe bad timing? I don't think I am going to be able to read any doctor plots this year.

Do Mutual Aid!

also and I know I'm writing alot here, there should be a warrior class for syls that changes the body shape more dramatically, like that old manga Kiseijuu. That would be kinda awesome

A disgruntled nondescript squirrel

I really hope she gets a host class or symbiot class soon. THis is getting rather creepy, plus I don't really enjoy consent issue plots that run very long. The ethical issues tend to wear down into repeats of the same themes over and over, plus consent issues in female characters is such a cliche. I mean it seems to happen to every strong female protag at one point on another. Either their raped, impregnated or mind controlled in some way. Then after their power has been stolen from them, we either get like 5 arcs of ptsd or they just ignore it completely as if it never happened.

A disgruntled nondescript squirrel

I really don't like Geneva as person she's so narcissistic. It feels like she only sees people as what they can do to help her.

brett thomas

Its a bacterial vector spread from open sours and puss. Why are they using leather armor. Is salt not an effective antibacterial that they have in abundance at sea. How did it spread if the incubation is 2 weeks on a sailing ship it would take a great deal of time just to reach another continent even with speed skills. By that point it would either be cured or would have obvious symptoms, even in the middle ages it is highly doughtful they would be allowed to land will still infectious covered in oozing puss. It would be more likely for the nobles to just burn the ship with crew using long distance fire mages. I loved the chapter but these are just somethings I wanted to point out as for your consideration

A disgruntled nondescript squirrel

There are two way to see it, I think: 1. Idis is the one smiling. You can see he's way more into being in a live body than he thought. 2. It's not Geneva who's smiling, but the *Last Light*. She's become consumed by her reputation to the point where she's basically stopped thinking of herself as Geneva, but the doctor who has to heal everyone.

Imran

Just a little existential horror to spice up the epidemic.

Joshua Flowers

This was a great chapter. That ending bit is my worst nightmare brilliantly executed. Gave me goosebumps.

Parker Groseclose

Indeed, very high chance of a merchant of death happening.

Parker Groseclose

Pretty sure the line just reflects how uncomfortable Geneva is with this whole cohabitation situation now.

Joshua Flowers

I wonder if she can try bacteria phages to deal with disease? Also that was morbid ending

Technobread

Same was Idis in control? Or was Geneva trapped in okasha’s body and okasha in Geneva’s?

Mike Murphy

I think the doctor was not in Control anymore I wonder how her friends will find out will the fourth company come to help. Shit just hit the fun. Will they discover the black Powder.

Caanbo

Paige 's pulling a Nobel, I see.

Imran

Wait what does that last line mean

Mike Murphy

Good old Pirateaba. Giving everyone the D.

A disgruntled nondescript squirrel

I am feeling everything that this chapter was made to make me feel☹️

Sylvan900

You know a story is getting spicy when warnings need to be given!

Jak

Thanks
