Katalepsis, Eusebeia Epoche - placid islands; black infinity - 2-1.1

Chapter emerges from the cave of hibernation, into the deep, dank, dreary woods. It raises a snout full of teeth and hunger, and howls at the open sky.

This week's password is: obsidian

An epub version of the chapter is also attached below!

Here it is! The very first chapter of Katalepsis Book Two! With an actual title!

And ... and ... uh, um, wow! I don't even know what to say, to be honest. This is almost more weird for me than finishing the first book. Here we are, it's the sequel! Hooray!

Ahem, anyway. I guess there are a few things I should say. Don't feel like you have to read any of this, though. Feel free to go straight over to the chapter. It's yours, after all. I hope you enjoy this new opening, dear readers!

First of all, thank you. To everyone who has stuck with the patreon during the wait between the end of Book One at the start of Book Two, you have my deepest gratitude. It is you who makes this all possible! Thank you so much.

Secondly, I do have some notes and thoughts and future things about Katalepsis Eusebeia Epoche itself.

This opening chapter is long, almost 10k words. I'm not sure if future chapters will be matching that kind of length, or bouncing back down to about ... 6k? 7k? And when I say "I'm not sure", I mean it - I'm genuinely not sure! This is one of those wildly unpredictable things about experimenting with new POVs, a new set of plots, new everything. I don't know what exactly these voices are going to come out like until they get moving. So, chapters will likely be a lot more variable in size than they were at the end of Katalepsis Book One.

Also! About intended structure and POVs: this first arc is going to be sticking with one POV, and then any switching will happen between arcs. This is different to how I've handled POVs over in Necroepilogos, but hopefully it'll make sense when we actually witness it happen.

This is partly because of how I'm planning to structure the story. Katalepsis Book One was a single long coherent narrative, all Heather, all the time. Eusebeia Epoche is going to be quite different; expect a series of smaller, interlocking, interdependent narratives, with character development and a larger plot brewing in the background. Again, this is the sort of thing I'll just have to do, on the page, live!

Some of the upcoming POVs in the future might be difficult, or weird, or experimental. So! I'm looking forward to those.

And I dearly hope that you will extend me the narrative trust that I've earned so far. I'll do my best with this, dear readers. Even I'm not 100% sure if it's going to work, or if I can stick this landing a second time. But I will do my absolute best. And I hope you're going to enjoy the ride.

And finally - you might be a little surprised by the POV of this first chapter. I know I was. I'd planned her, planned all of this, a very long time ago, and I thought I knew what I was stepping into.

But she still surprised me, you know? And I think that's a very good thing. Very promising.

Let's see what she does. She's in charge now, I'm just the conduit.

On with the show!

Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed it! I'm looking forward to exploring Maisie much more, indeed!

Hazel Young

This was a really great start. Looking forward to getting to know Maisie.

Phthalaldehyde

This is true!!!

Hazel Young

Impossible! You can never love cephalopods too much!

Xavius Night

Perhaps I just love cephalopods too much!

Hazel Young

Aaah, if I'd meant cephalopod, I'd have said it was a W shape or the like, I just chose an odd shape you don't normally see in nature xD

Xavius Night

Maisie saying that actual dialogue out loud to the Mimic here. I can see it! Also yes, she was kidnapped and it made her ... well, did it make her like this? Or was she always this way?

Hazel Young

The kidney-bean shaped pupil is very cephalopod! It could easily be Heather, or something very much like her, peering out of the depths and through the 4th wall. But yes, it's also yourself! Oooooh, yes, the addition of the dialogue is also very good! That adds something important as well.

Hazel Young

What if you were kidnapped by a giant eyeball and it made you autistic? Wouldn't that be weird? What if your sister came to rescue you and it turned out the eyeball had been trying to adopt you? Wouldn't that be kinda fucked up?

Griffin Bryant

I also just realized that it didn't paste in the dialogue bits at the end of each paragraph, that's upsetting. After the end of the first paragraph, it should've said {Self-Doubt. Emptiness. Seeks fullness.} then after the second paragraph: {Reflection. Novel. Unexpected.} {... Interest: achieved.} then the last line

Xavius Night

tbh, the Watcher is just a representative of me reading over 200 stories at once rn, cuz I cycle through stories waiting for new chapters xD Also, I want to know what symbolism you see in the Kidney-Bean shaped pupil.

Xavius Night

Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed the chapter!! Yay!

Hazel Young

Thank you!!! It feels very good to be publishing Katalepsis again! I'm really glad Maisie's POV worked so well for this opening; she really surprised me, too! As for main plotlines and big bads, we'll have to see. I have some larger plans lurking in the background, but this time they may take slower shape from smaller initial building blocks, constructing something larger as they go. But yes, we still nee villains! And I'm sure we'll have plenty. And hahahaha, Heather vanishing in the middle of class would cause a bit of a stir. But I'm sure those not-In-The-Know would find a way to rationalise it, indeed.

Hazel Young

Thank you so much!!! Yay! I'm really glad you enjoyed this opening! Maisie has been so exciting to write, I'm really enjoying her POV, and I'm very glad she made such a bold entrance.

Hazel Young

Oooooooooooooooooh!!! Thank you, gosh! It's always a delight to see something like this, such a creative gem of commentary. Thank you, and I'm very glad you're enjoying the opening. Pupil shaped like a kidney bean, eh? I think I might know what that means ...

Hazel Young

Gosh gosh gosh! Wednesday Addams vibes is a huge compliment, thank you! I'm really glad you enjoyed her POV opening so much. She's really surprised me, been a blast to write her so far. I really like her too! Looking forward to where she goes.

Hazel Young

Thank you! Maisie's POV is great fun, she made a hell of a rapid impact, and yeah, you can probably see that I'm playing around a lot with narrative structure and metatextual techniques. Really glad you enjoyed it!

Hazel Young

Book One? Haha, maybe. I mean the first 4 arcs are already available as an ebook. I'd like to make the time to clean up and publish the rest as well, but writing fresh chapters for both stories comes first, for now!

Hazel Young

Woooooooooooo!!! Finally here! Yay!

Hazel Young

Heather gets a text message in the middle of class. Looking panicked, she stands up and yells, "My sister NEEDS cuddles!" *Pop* And suddenly, she is gone, tearing through reality and desecrating the laws of physics' mother in the name same-second-delivery sister cuddle time. Her classmates just stare, slack jawed at what happened until reality finally reasserts itself, and normality settles into their brains. "Did Heather come in today?" "I think she had to leave early. Something about her sister?" "Oh, that's right. Her sister just moved back from abroad. I hope she's doing well readjusting after the move." "Didn't she just get out of the hospital or something?"

Kennyevilmonkey

I love it <3

Capybellie

Reunited and it feels so good~~~ Oh, how I have missed reading Kata. The new POV was fun to read, and the story can go in so many directions now. Has me wondering if we are going to be getting a new Big Bad to go up against now that the Eye has been MILFafied, or if it will be some other plot line to pull us forward. Still need villains though. Violence is most certainly necessary. 🥰

Kennyevilmonkey

I love it i love it i love it I love it!!!!!! this is such a good way to get Maisie in her own story!

Bubbling and churning, the nest of eyes watching untold number of threads shifts in place a bit. A tangled slurry of eyes and meat and wet digestive tract and delicate, gentle hands continues its endless examinations of innumerable worlds. On one thread, two hands rest, their long, many-jointed fingers teasing and touching the thread they examine, the star-pupiled eye staring at its length examining its fullness and content. The eye rotates in place, unblinking, as it observes the approach of something like a doubling of the line its hands, drawing a narrowing of focus. A second eye rotates to observe the thread of narrative, pupil shaped like a kidney bean; it is smaller than the first, but keen, and stares intently, a third hand reaching out to aid in reading the strand. The Watcher of Threads bears witness to this new story from its cystic sanctuary in reality's guts.

Xavius Night

Wooooo! I love Maise so much. I think I might like her more than Heather, but we will have to wait to see who she decides to be. Giving Wednesday Addams vibes right now

Brynn Szczesniak

I like that we're already playing with the narrative structure. Already made a toy of the POV from the last character and what an establishing moment this is!

Ophelia Magos

Now chop the book up and publish it for *money*.
