2025-11-11 23:29:02 +0000 UTCIf you watch the last scene again, there was a bullet mark in the hairpin. So Maomao saved her life by giving her the hairpin. The first bullet got her in the arm, which is why there was blood, but the second bullet hit the pin and pushed her off the roof. She landed on a snowy bush which broke her fall. We see the glimmer in the bush as the guy who was guarding Mao Mao is walking away from the battle (the guy who came back and found Mao Mao eating the snake and told her to run away bc the Imperial Army is coming and that’s what he is going to do) so the implication is that he saved her. Since “Loulan” is now dead and she has entrusted her sister’s wellbeing to Jinshi, she takes up a new name and leaves in search of a new life. Her intention was die in those final moments, but by a twist of fate she was given another chance. Everyone thought it was Shenmei’s game, but Shisui was holding the cards in the end 🥹

I only watch the anime as well, so I'm also hoping for more romantic progress next season. But given the amount of books I can see them stretching it further. 😭

Taking it just meant she’d appear “dead” for a while, but Jinshi said they couldn’t find her body no matter how deep they dug through the snow, meaning she escaped right away. If you look closely at the hairpin she trades to the merchant for a jade cicada, there’s a big dent on it. And if you go back to when Maomao gave it to her, Shisui put it in her inner pocket near her chest. So basically, what happened is that when Shisui was shot, the bullet hit the hairpin in her pocket, leaving that dent we see later, and the impact knocked her off the tower instead of killing her. In other words, she survived because of Maomao, which honestly makes her luck feel almost poetic
