Sabo leaving and them not going after to make sure he was happy, in my opinion, is why Luffy is always so determined to go after a crew member that leaves for something else. Nami and Robin. He has to make sure, because he once didn't go after his brother and next thing they knew he was dead.

One piece is just too big to pick 8-10~ main characters as your favorite characters. Maybe give yourself an alliance crew like how whitebeard had several allies. And maybe a secondary villain. We're 500 episodes in, surely 8 favorites is a little small of a selection in 500+ episodes.
