Wouldve been nice symmetry in my opinion. We couldve done without majority of the Buggy and Mr 3 scenes early on.

2025-11-03 03:06:44 +0000 UTCAnge, hear me out, if they put this before Ace died, it would be a big red flag that he was going to die. They wanted the shock factor. If anything, it should have been way back when they met ace in alabasta. If they put this in marine ford, the gut punch wouldn't have happened because you'd be able to tell that's why they were talking about ace. Or even before impel down. They would have needed like a hundred episodes inbetween to throw you off the trail.

I think if you see these flashbacks during that time, it would've foreshadow Ace's death a bit more. One piece has been notorious about only killing people in flashback stories, so I think it makes you start thinking about "oh wait, are they gonna kill Ace?". Whereas with how they did it, you're still kinda in denial with Ace dying even after Akainu punches Ace because "Oda never kills anyone, no way he dies." Especially with how they tell this flashback story, I think it's important to keep it standalone and fluid in story telling. It's not something Oda just spends a couple of chapters on. It's kinda like a Saobody mini arc where it needs your full attention. Not thrown into the middle of another arc. But, just my opinion because at first I thought the same. It would've been nice to know more about Ace, but this has more impact in the long run.

He knew that these mountain bandits were practically harmless and that Dadan would be a good mother figure for Ace and Luffy. Ace needed to be hidden away and Luffy did too after eating his fruit, leaving them with Makino (bar lady) wasn't an option either. And his decision is the reason why Ace and Luffy became bothers, who can be against that?

We already had an overflow of characters and lots of events happening in Impel Down. introducing a flashback back then would’ve done nothing but diluting the story and cutting into the tension that is the race to save Ace. On top of that this flashback is one of the longest and deserved to be treated with care. I also was thinking about the point you made, that ace‘s death means nothing because we didn’t know much about him at the time. You could say the very same about whitebeard, even more so because we knew him even less. I’m holding it with BonChan here: friendship has nothing to do with how long we have known each other. The same goes for morning the death of a character.

2025-11-02 17:39:36 +0000 UTC24:24 Ange you cannot be serious to even think about giving Garp credit for dumping the kids into some mountain bandits home, which he then forced to take care of the kids by blackmailing them. saying he works miles away and he at least cared enough to make them look after is nothing to be proud of. He just couldn’t leave them in the forest so he looked for the closest thing that wouldn’t get him into trouble with hiding Ace from the world government. Truly baffled by your comments here.

2025-11-02 16:42:17 +0000 UTCIt’s interesting, because when I showed to my partner the Marineford arc, he also said he barely knew Ace for him to feel bad about his death and felt this flashback had a weird placement. But for me Ace’s death didn’t wreck me because of my feeling towards him as a character (in fact, if I had have a segment for a crew back on my first watch, he wouldn’t have made it to my crew like yours), it was because of how much he meant to Luffy, watch my favorite anime character go through all of that because of how much he loved his brother and then lose him anyway… man, that makes me cry even after several rewatches, and with time, even after this flashback, you come to realize the impact he had in the story 😭 Ace became an important character to me AFTER he died. I don’t know if this is an unpopular opinion THB 😂
