2025-11-01 05:50:20 +0000 UTCI had the same thought when i first watched it. "Why wasn't this flashback placed earlier like at Impel down or right before Marineford?". Until i finished the flashback. Ace's death and Luffy's reaction hurt far more after seeing how they grew up together knowing full well how it ended for Ace. Seeing a character grow and become who they are while knowing they're already dead is tragic. I can see the benefits of both sides (flashback before vs after Ace's death) but i think i prefer it after his death.

2025-10-31 23:41:43 +0000 UTCi think theres a couple reasons why this flashback fits better after then before. Theres a few death flags that i think take away from the plot twist that is his death. Theres also a few details that I think Oda wanted to be known afterwards for instance roger being aces dad. Also i think having the flashback happen during marineford would have ruined the pacing that was established for such a massive war arc. You could argue that not having this flashback before does a disservice for the emotional impact of Aces death and I think that would be fair but I do think if you ask me personally the flashback is nicely placed within the story.

Remember how this all started, losing all of his crewmates on Sabaody. How he broke down screaming, even then. This is a capstone to the entire massive arc that began back then; it's way more than just telling us about Ace

2025-10-31 20:12:52 +0000 UTCif the flashback would have taken place during impel down it would be an anime-red-flag cause flashbacks to this extent mean most of the time that someone dies .. and the death of ace caught everyone off guard at that point in time .. i mean this was 2010 .. most mangaka wouldnt have dared to take such a risk .. foreshadowing that would have ruined the impact .. and youll see that those flashbacks will touch your heart either way

One example is, this backstory clearly says Roger is father of Ace, and if it is at Impel Down, the whole twist at the start of Marineford would have zero weight.

2025-10-31 18:48:39 +0000 UTCi totally understand why you would've wanted to see this flashback earlier ange. for me i still liked the timing cuz after everything luffy went through to save ace, for him to still die was so sad. the fact that they were brothers was enough for me to be invested in the rescue mission and when he died i felt so empty...that it was nice to have the good memories of ace and luffy together in this flashback.
