2025-10-29 02:11:43 +0000 UTCPronouns! Just like in english there is gender identity connotations with pronouns in Japanese. But they’re not as solid or binary as he/him or she/her. Ore and Boku tend to be masculine. Watashi and Atashi tend to be feminine. But plenty of people use any of them despite their gender. For example. Brook from One Piece uses Watashi to refer to himself. Akira here was saying plenty of women online use Ore as a pronoun to avoid harassment. Japanese pronouns and honorifics are complicated but very interesting. If u like i highly recommend doing a quick google search for a more detailed rundown.

They are used in different social contexts. „Boku“ is used by men usually in casual context, „ore“ is the same but more rough (You could say it’s rude in a formal situation) „watashi“ is gender-neutral, polite and more formal. Carlie (and maybe you too Ange 😃), if you would want to practice some more Japanese there’s an app I really like: TEUIDA. It’s based on talk and simple conversations. Duolingo is fine but not the best. Also thank you so much for the content! 😁
