My first contact, when I was like 11, was with Ouran High School Host Club 😂 it’s about a character that gets caught up in debt trying to pay as a member of the club in a rich people school. It’s all comedy, you can see very exaggerated versions of the tropes related to these “hosts”, trying to seduce their customers just so they spend more money on them. Knowing this was like 17 years ago makes me feel old 🥲 hahaha

2025-09-27 20:03:28 +0000 UTCA bit of context about the host profession in Japan: Hosts in Japan usually work in places like night clubs and they are companions to their customers for the night, their work heavily rely on their charisma to persuade customers to spend money on them, popping champagne or any kind of luxurious spending in a night club, these spending will become the hosts' track record for their club's ranking, these customers/fans will completely whale on their dedicated host to boost their rank. That's why good hosts have insanely good communication skills and techniques to keep ambiguous relationship with their customers, hence the "Bento scene" sub plot. it's a very unique industry in Japan and, in my opinion, one of the few twisted things exists only in Japan, they are, in essence, selling fantasy and illusion of intimacy.
