I’ve watched the entirety of Naruto in English and Japanese. I caught up to the episodes that were out in English and switched. They are different and I was a little shell-shocked but I would say that the translations do get better. I would say that Naruto is one of those shows where you could do either and have a good experience. Maybe the Japanese VAs are more consistent across the entire cast, but the English VAs I would say are about as good for all of the important/bigger roles. The most frustrating part of the show is that sometimes in the anime the more complex aspects of the power system aren’t explained as well in the anime as the manga. But I’m sure spoiler free clarifications can be made if need be

2025-08-26 19:42:39 +0000 UTCOne thing that needs to be addressed spoiler-free because the show does a poor job explaining it and the subtitles often mess this up as well is that "Shadow Clone Jutsu" (Kage Bunshin no Jutsu) and "Clone Jutsu" (Bunshin no Jutsu) are two completely different things. The Clone Jutsu is the one they learned during academy lessons and it's a simple clone that can move around and that's about it. Shadow Clone on the other hand is the technique Naruto learned from the scroll, and it's functionally different because as you might have already seen the clones can also use jutsu themselves (i.e: Harem Jutsu), talk independently and have their own personalities (as demonstrated when Kakashi dipped out and he left naruto and his clones fight each other). Those clones are "real" clones. There are other applications of this jutsu but that'd be spoilers. Sometimes subtitles translate as "Shadow Clone" when the particular character used the normal Clone Jutsu, or vice versa so you should pay a little more attention to the voiceline in order to avoid confusion like "Wait, how is this character using Shadow Clones" when in reality it was a simple clone. Also, for the power systems presented so far, a quick rundown would be: "Ninjutsu" - basically any "spell" that needs chakra to perform it. Both clones and the fireball Sasuke used are ninjutsu. "Genjutsu" - anything illusory. "Taijutsu" - physical abilities (think of it like hand-to-hand combat).
