Mushoku Ep 18 FULL REACTION!

Its not really like being deaf, because telepathy is basically the ONLY way the Migurds communicate. So she can't even communicate through writing or sign language. She also knows people are talking but can't understand what they are saying. Its closer to Autism than simply being deaf. Its an inability to understand the social cues of her peers because of how her brain is wired.

Roxy's childhood is a tragic story and does a lot in explaining her character. In a lot of ways it could relate to someone who grew up with a developmental disorder... not being able to communicate with her peers and community is a terrible thing in itself, but some may fail to realize the extent of what this means. She could not form deep connections with anyone, she truly was an outcast. She was broken. It also cannot be underestimated how much we as people rely on those deep personal connections that we take for granted, and how much damage it could do to someone to not be able to forge them properly at a young age. She wasn't being treated maliciously of course, but that possibly makes it even harder to bear. If the people around her were ostracizing her purposely she could've justifiably directed her hate at them as a coping mechanism for her loneliness. But she couldn't even do that. The people around her didn't hate her, they just couldn't connect with her enough for them to properly even acknowledge her. And every time they try she just gets lambasted with a horrible, grating noise in her head. Even though her parents did all they could and loved her dearly, she felt that being around made things harder on them. And she was right, having a daughter that can't properly fit into society and required extra attention IS stressful. And on the inverse side, if she weren't "broken" then they would most likely be a bit happier. Of course her parents most certainly never actually thought she was a burden and truly loved her to the best of their ability, but the insecurities were and are still there. The shame of not being normal, not being able to fit properly into the Migurd society, and being a burden to her family all caused her a never-ending cycle of mental anguish that eventually culminated in her decision to leave on a journey, to find something or somewhere she felt she could belong. These feelings of insecurity bleed over into other aspects of her life: her appearance, her magical ability, and so on... And through all that, being able to return and realize that she always has a place at home is such a beautiful and heartwarming thing.

the way i see it, if there was one deaf person living in a town, would you expect the whole town to learn sign language? ideally it would be nice but realistically its not going to happen. also roxys parents went out of their way to learn a language just to teach roxy, otherwise even they couldnt communicate with her.. its a little glossed over in the anime but they really did try

This is probably a rare take, but if I had to choose a single favourite episode of this show, I'd choose this one. It's pretty much a self-contained short story, but the way they present it and how well it clicks with me is something else. If anyone had to move to another country and learn a new language, this experience checks out completely.
