The purpose of Toga and Shigaraki’s backstory’s are to show how a quirk influences who you are. Think about Bakugo. Bakugo seems to have nice parents but even with that, he is agro all the time. One might say, he has a short fuse. If he had abusive parents, he’d be wasting people left and right. Toga’s quirk made her have a very different relationship with blood than normal people. Drinking blood basically became her love language. We hug and kiss, she drinks and embodies. Since that wasn’t acceptable, she put up a facade and eventually just couldn’t hold it back anymore. Now she is just surviving in a world that refuses to accept her.

Tenko’s backstory destroys me. I burst into tears every time his mother reaches for him. Its really a shame too, for Nana to have to give up her son and everything that came after. Also love that you both noticed the parallel between shiggy as a person and his motivations with the LoV. Also the parallel with Izuku. You’ll also note that izuku was outcasted and tenko was the type to reach out to outcasts. The writer of this manga Hori is super into hammering home the same message about the inherent morals of humanity versus circumstance and what it means for perception of a person and i think thats what i love most about mha. And i loved your whole end discussion about it too because can a child TRULY be evil? Do ppl start evil or are they made?

Too

The villains have the saddest backstories, bawling my eyes out even after having seen Shigaraki's quirk awakening dozens of times by now 😭

Carrying on from how Todoroki Shouto and Shimura Tenko/Shigaraki Tomura remind me of each other - I have no doubt that if Todoroki's quirk was as powerful as Tenko's was as a child, he absolutely would've killed his father as well, and if All For One wasn't the one to find Tenko but instead a genuine hero like Izuku then Tenko would've been able to avoid the path of villainy and live a more normal life or even become a hero 🥹

Phoenix

That's because he's just letting it loose mostly we see he can have fine control and only decay what he wants to. It's like 13 super destructive but could be used for good. Like decay rubble to save people or send the decay under someone's feet to detain them.

Kami

There's always the argument of "could this person be a hero with their quirk." Shigaraki is one of those people where I don't think he could've been a hero. I personally think his quirk is way to destructive to be used for anything but killing and destruction.

Dune

He didn't actually have allergies... that was just the dumbass parents/grandparents not realizing the psychological trauma they were causing their child. He still scratches to this day because yea... he still has trauma. The dude wears the hands of his famiy on his body/face. I don't think he's "gotten over it." Also, about the MVP section: it doesn't REALLY matter at the end of the day but I feel like not giving to the character who is the EMOTIONAL CORE of the episode is a little off.

The Great Santini

Carlie, I'm going to HARD disagree with you on this one. I don't think he was "psychotic" at ALL as a kid. He, like Toga, was born a normal kid. His circumstances ruined him. He had a dad who beat him and caused so much anxiety in the house that he developed a "tic" (if you will) of scratching the shit out of himself. He was not BORN damaged goods. His father made him that way. Of course, you're probably referring to his "bloodlust" when killing his father and his mentioning that he "hated" his family, but again, that wasn't HIS fault. They did that to him. Combine that with a quirk that he had NO idea how to control (it had JUST awoken at that moment), and a gruesome disaster struck.

The Great Santini

Twice had a really similar story to Gentle. He lived an unlucky life, and the world continuously punished him for it.

Natsuo Todoroki

to answer your question about shigaraki’s decay and the building. he didn’t decay the top of the tower, either because didn’t want to or because his quirk couldn’t reach that far. we’ve seen him control the scope of his decay in cases like taking overhaul’s arm but it also can’t necessarily extend indefinitely, his ability still has limits. i’m not sure it’s necessarily clear which at this point. but, once the bottom of the tower was gone everything just starts to crumble. getting so excited for season 6!! 😁😁😁

I'm so excited you finally got to Shiggy's backstory. It's so heartbreaking and I'm so glad you called it one of the best in the story! It mentioned in the episode that Shigaraki's quirk manifested late. Most show up at age 4 but Shigaraki was 5 here and still hadn't gotten his until now so he didn't really have any idea what was happening in this situation or any control over such a powerful quirk. It really is just a release of built up trauma coming out all at once which ties into the itching. He doesn't feel safe at home and his anxiety is so high which leads to the itching and when everything is finally released he stops feeling itchy. As much as the family did try to help at the end, to me it feels a little like the message is "too little, too late" with them constantly making excuses for the dad and going along with all the abuse. We see the dad hit Tenko, but also leave him outside without food and not let him back into the house for so much as saying he wants to be a hero. At 5 years old! We can probably assume this went on for a while so by the time that the rest of the family finally say enough's enough it probably doesn't feel to Tenko like anyone will ever stand up for him. So glad you picked up on the Deku and Shigaraki parallels, they really do mirror each other, both wanting to be heroes, sticking up for friends, idolizing All Might, but not having a quirk to be like him. About the blood being shown in the flashback, they censored this scene a lot! We see Mon (the dog) decay like normal as dust at first and then be in bloody pieces on the ground after, same with Hana and the rest of the family. In the manga Shigaraki's quirk just breaks them apart in bloody chunks right in front of him which is so much more traumatic. They also removed Spinner's backstory from this episode which is one of the reasons people were so upset with this season. They add it in a later season though so I won't spoil you about it now.

Shigaraki's back story was so dark. Love these episodes for reminding us of the threat of the League. They're not just some throw away villians. Everyone, students and villians, are leveling up!
