Oda has said in the past that he wanted to make a story that fully connected with everything. I believe he is not only referring to the story connecting to itself in every way (which it does as u will see the more you watch). But he also means it is quite literally connecting to everything in the real world. Pretty much every single character name and design has some type of referrence to the real world, history, time periods, work of arts like "The beatles" "Eminem" "WW2" "the cuban revolution" "dantes inferno" 2The bible" The list just goes on and on. It is sprinkled in everywhere
