This series was honestly one of the best during the year it released, there has been some really great stuff since then, but I think it's held up really well, especially considering the source material (manga) is from 89-94. Love these episodes.
Tamura was also a really cool character, a mysterious antagonist that is highly intelligent and capable, and ends up "switching sides" pretty much all on her own accord. Not a standard dynamic for character development at all imo. Not to mention she ended up being critical in Shinichi & Migi's development and overall themes of the show. W Writing

Ah ep 18~ it's so good on many levels. As a viewer, we're led to believe that Shinichi's losing his humanity after Migi's cells merged with his, because Shinichi himself correlated his physical changes with his emotional change. In this ep, all the pieces fall into place, and suddenly it's clear that it might've been just trauma all along. Like the female scientist pointed out briefly, some kids do act extremely calm after something traumatic happens. It's an uncommon response, but not inhuman. Perhaps unconsciously, Shinichi used Migi as a crutch afterwards to keep himself from feeling the pain, taking Migi's survival lessons to heart. It's so poetic that the trauma caused by one parasite (killed his mother and almost killing him in her image) is overwritten by another parasite (reminding him of what his mother really used to be and allowing him to face his loss).
Through Tamura's research, we're also seeing that there are some similarities between parasites and humans and that parasites have individual personalities as well (which she was happy to observe in her fight against the other parasites).

This show is admittedly guilty of side characters often being dumb for the sake of plot...
