Cried all over again rewatching this episode. Luffy losing the one other crewmate that matches his goofiness was tragic. It is also appropriate you describing this episode as "heavy" because I think that's the more accurate translation of what Luffy says to Zoro when he walks back to the ship after the fight. The weight of being the captain is probably at its heaviest here.

You two just had the realest most raw reaction to this I've seen in a while. This is just an introduction to what's to come. It's why we've been so excited to get to this arc. What an irony. Usopp’s best fight up to this point, where he shows he isn’t weak, that his strengths are different than the muscle ones, is against Luffy, one of the few people who has never thought of him as weak.

I think ussop and luffy deserves bounties for what happened. Luffy learned to make tough decisions as a captain, and ussop "stood on business" for the first time. Both growing moments, despite it being against each other, made them improve as people.

seeing carlie so unwell turned this rewatch into one of the toughest ones for me😭 like, it’s already hard but then I see her face and my heart breaks lol😭 on the other hand, we’re getting so close to ange crying, lets goooo🪂 lmaooo yeah, what carlie said perfectly sums up this situation for me, these two were so blinded by their pride during the whole fight, luffy being mad because usopp was trying to blame him for things that are out of his control so he couldn’t understand how usopp was actually feeling, and usopp trying to cover his insecurities by blaming others for things that are only happening on his head. It hurts like fkin hell seeing usopp lie to himself so much cause he can’t confront reality, he did it when his mom was sick and now he does it with the merry, him feeling like he’s never strong enough to protect his loved ones breaks my heart in a million pieces. and luffy realizing he failed as a captain… that is peak devastation for me, i literally can’t blame a 17 year old for being immature, but when zoro hits us with that bomb at the end of 236, I realized how the writing for this conflict is immaculate, straight up cinema, not only this part of the story works as a mirror that makes you reflect on this characters, get on their shoes and empathize with them, but it also works as a door where you can come into their world and experience this as if you’re part of it too(?), that’s something I felt personally on like my 4th rewatch of these eps (yeah I like to suffer), if it was only empathy I wouldn’t be sobbing my ass off, and that’s what makes me consider one piece a masterpiece just like you said ange, the human aspect of this show is one of my favorites in all media. and well that’s enough yapping for the day, jesus🪂 I even got cheesy and sht😔

A big thing to consider, how early on in the arc you are. This scene is definitely …. a part of what makes it so all come together and if this alone makes you think it can tier up to the greatest highs, you will want to grab another tissue box.

This is why I love watching reactors, and specifically you guys - seeing things in new lights just adds more life and love for a show I already adore. Ange has great intuition and Carlie brings so much heart, and the fact that you guys appreciate and vocalize your appreciation of the multiple character facets - makes it so enjoyable. With the bounties not being rewarded this episode - I don't mind it - trust your gut even if you don't know why.

These episodes are always a tough watch. One good thing about One Piece's length is we've had 200+ episodes by this point to grow to love the characters, so seeing this hits hard. And this is just the start of the saga! Still lots more of Oda's excellent story-telling to come!

Yeah I agree I think Luffy should've tried easing Usopp into it instead of just saying they were getting a new ship. Also part of the reason Usopp reacted that strongly might be because Kaya gave them the ship who Usopp loves, or at least cares very strongly for.

Also, for the bounties. I feel like giving luffy and ussop majority of a bounty equally, and then split whatever else between the rest of the crew (minus robin) would be fair. I think that you could give bounties based on individual character development moments, but also, character relationship developments. Especially since it affected you both as much as it did

One Piece is definitely a rollercoaster of emotions. you wouldn't expect that at such a serious time, Oda is still able to make you laugh and then cry in the next second or minute. Such a masterpiece

Seeing how tough the decision to give out bounties in this episode, I suggest you guys do some kind of top 10 character moments/episodes for the Straw Hats once in a while. It would definitely make this episode memorable. I myself think of the Bounty as tribute to a Straw Hat who has big character moments that I feel more invested in them. In that case, giving the same to both Usopp and Luffy in this episode would not feel wrong.

Which is tragic because Luffy was trying to bring the news as painlessly as possible. He wanted to keep Merry's condition a secret to don't hurt him and he was behaving in a light tone so they could move on from the sad situation. But it backfired.

As an English major it's wild for me to admit that Oda has the best understanding of human emotion out of every author I've ever read. This is when One Piece really starts to emphasize that understanding alongside how well crafted each crew member is.

Luffy has to make tough decisions as the captain but the way he bluntly breaks the news to Usopp sets him off. Usopp feels like if Luffy can let go of the Merry so easily, he might do the same to him one day 🥹💔.
