People bingeing the show today can still (and should tbh) appreciate this episode considering what happened with the studio and yet still not enjoy it. I was simply telling Carlie and Ange why the episode wasn't a "mess up" or a "mistake".

They had to choose between laying off part of the animators before they finished and using rehashed animation. I think they made the morally sensible choice as creators.

2025-02-16 11:36:46 +0000 UTC@leo Love triangles are generally considered to be a bad trope that is common in trashy messy romance novels and shows. They are not an example of high quality writing. I don't get the defense that it is realistic for teenagers. Watching what is always 100% realistic for teenagers all the time won't make a very interesting story. It's like watching the real houswives of Malibu or something. I get that there is an audience for messy romance and drama like that and it is realistic, but it's not for everyone. That last bit you mentioned is a spoiler. Also, the love triangle is in season 1, when they hadn't thought of it yet. Season 1 was supposed to be a standalone project. I doubt the writers thought of the plot point you mentioned any earlier than season 3, although personally I believe they didn't think of it till season 4. The love triangle was binned in season 2, so these two plot points really have nothing to do with each other. I could go into other points about why the love triangle was terrible writing, like Mako being a character who was clearly invented specifically for the triangle, and when they binned it, Mako's character arc kind of disappeared.

I think they are just disappointed that instead of putting a creative spin on it, they just had them narrate past episode clips... Carlie and Ange I hear you guys loud and clear and agree! 2025-02-11 04:58:15 +0000 UTCPeople watching this episode today might not like it much, but keep in mind that back in the day, when we watched it live we had been following Korra for a couple of years, not just a few weeks, so it really wasn't that bad to have a recap that close to the end of the journey (because yes we knew it was over after this season at this point). You guys focused a lot on the bad like the romance, but it did cover every plot point in the story, good or bad. Considering the behind the scene stuff with this episode, I do appreciate it a lot tbh...

From what I've read on the internet the budget for the production of this season was suddenly slashed around this time. The producers were adamant about not letting go any of the cast and crew. So they had to cut resources in other ways. Making this recap episode with reused scenes and dialogue was one of the results of that. If you pay close attention from now on, you will even notice that some of the characters no longer have any lines, because they didn't have the budget to pay the voice actors. It is unfortunate, but this show struggled a lot during production. I believe season 3 was the only season that they could produce knowing they had enough budget for more episodes going forward. And you can kind of see it in the result. Personally I rate season 3 the highest. Then season 4 and season 1 are about equal to me, because season 1 had that love triangle. Season 2 is the worst by a mile, and even the creators were self aware about it this episode.

Basically Nickelodeon cut their budget to the point where they couldnt afford the episode they wanted to make. Instead of letting go of their crew earlier than they had originally planned, they kept them on the payroll and created a much cheaper to produce 'clips episode'. Which IMO sucks as a fan of the show who want more content but is really cool of the show runners to do for their employees. They couldnt even afford a more creative recap episode like the ember island play episode in Atla because they could barely afford new animations. according to the blog post they were only able to make about 5 minutes of new animations
