The only lavabenders we've seen are the Avatar and ghazan and Bolin. we'd have to know about Ghazans parents, but Bolin obviously has firenation blood and the avatar can also bend fire themselves. maybe there is something to do with a repressive fire gene for earth benders

Zaheer KNOWS she's dead, thats how he doesnt have attachments anymore. Also I'd love it if Tenzin could fly, but its not worth him losing, uhhh... Katara, Bumi, kya, his children, Korra...

2025-01-04 18:21:17 +0000 UTCUntil we get confirmation from the creators it can be assumed that having Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation genetics just make it easier to lavabend. Sozin was able to pull the heat out of lava, cooling it down enough to solidify while still not being able to bend the lava itself beforehand. So Bolin having Fire nation blood would make sense giving him the ability to lavabend more naturally. Lavabending can be a learned ability, like Ghazan was shown heating up rocks by friction the first time. Or you can be a “prodigy” like Bolin being able to do it naturally due to his bloodline. Any magic system will always get murky/confusing as it goes on unfortunately.

2025-01-04 18:17:33 +0000 UTCThere's no canon answer as far as I'm aware, so it's a fine theory, it just never made sense to me. There is no real support for it other than Bolin having firebe nation blood and seeing past avatars lavabend. We have no idea what Ghazans heritage is. Also, there are plenty of other bending subsets like metalbending, lighting bending, blood bending, etc. that can be done by small numbers of people and has nothing to do with having mixed parentage. I'm not sure what makes people think lavabending different from those. It's just a different phase of matter, like water & ice, which waterbenders manipulate all the time
