Oda initially wanted to start One Piece off in a recent arc that just ended. Therefore the deaths and return of characters may be foreshadowing for the final saga.

2024-11-02 14:43:01 +0000 UTC@Carlie & Ange, I wanted to clarify something about the Pell's "fake death" plot point. So, originally, Pell was actually dead when the chapter came out in 2001 but the timing was unfortunate because then 9/11 attacks happened in the US a few weeks after that chapter. And Pell's character was blown up in the manga before 9/11 so it was really bad timing. Because of this, Oda went back and changed Pell's death to lighten the mood of the readers who were at the time shocked by the attack on the twin towers in the US like the rest of the world was. This was a very nice gesture from Oda at the time but as you can see, it left a massive plot hole in One Piece and the "fake Pell death" is a meme but the reason behind it is pretty sad. I remember being annoyed when I first watched this but then I learned the reason so it helps me ignore the obvious plot hole there and its an example of how real life events do sometimes effect the production of One Piece and other manga/ anime.

It's seen as the start of an infamous "issue" with One Piece where death is reserved almost exclusively for flashbacks. At some point it'll be appropriate to share what the community calls the fakeout phenomena in OP cause it does happen a few times. Oda did not originally intend to bring Pell back, but the 9/11 attacks in the USA took place around the time the manga chapter first released. Oda felt it was in poor taste and out of respect of the situation he brought Pell back later on when he felt it would work in the story. Butterfly effect.

You can sort of suspend your disbelief with Igaram for a number of reasons (Robin being sly, the explosion being relatively small and around water) but Pell is pretty difficult to do the same. Really surprised Mr. 2 hasn't made his way into either crew with his moment here! But there are tons of good choices.

Also because Alabasta is the first long arc in One Piece, and we spent a lot of time with the same characters. Robin is a straw hat 👒 She deserves her spot in your Straw Hat Crew Love how you get ready when you hear the sad piano 😂 Real one piece fans, when hearing it, make themselves comfortable, take a deep breath, and move the tissue box closer.
